What weight did you use for the broke man downrigger? What do you recommend? Thanks. Good info, by the way.

Just what I was looking for. I need downriggers for my pontoon, but don't want to deal with mounting and crap being in the way for family play days. Perfect! I have several old reels and a spoon of 65lb braid for catfishing I can use! Cost me literally nothing to set up now!

The speedometer idea is great. My fish finder does not have that, so I will be trying the smart phone GPS speedometer...thanks.

Great info! We have done the bucket thing for years and it does work really well. I have a couple of old reels and I am going to give this a try. What do you think about mounting them to the old lower halves of broken rods. This may help to keep the weights away from the boat a little better. I have several that I junk picked and have not done anything with. I may set up some kind of rig made from PVC pipe that will hold the "broke mans downrigger" off to an angle. If I figure something out, I will send you a photo, if I can figure out how to do it here on KZbin. Keep up the great work. Tight lines. Scott

Hey, my uncle gave me a fleuger bait caster, but the problem is I've never used one. I have used open faced reels my whole life, and I just can't seem to get the bait caster to work for me. Any suggestions?
@thecardoc823410 жыл бұрын
Might be a dumb question but is there a reason you need 80 pound braded line for that little amount of weighted balls?
@InformativeFisherman9 жыл бұрын
I know I can drop the weights without worry is all

if you drill a few 1 " holes in your bucket it will slow you down even more because the water is forced through the holes. good vid.

Don't forget the schedule 40 PVC pipe rod holders, I run the poor man rigs for salmon, and the PVC Schedule40 rod holders are TOUGH and work well for people on a budget.
@jackiebeene96098 жыл бұрын
I get showing people how to fish like a "broke man" but if you can afford a single rod and reel, then you can afford a net. THEY ARE NOT THAT EXPENSIVE, and can save you from losing a fish or getting a hook in your hand which would in most cases cause a visit to the emergency room or an urgent care center.
@JamesSmith-gg7wj8 жыл бұрын
Let alone it takes away stress from the fish. But not everyone has respect that some of us fisherman do.
@edwardh10035 жыл бұрын
I like the trolling bucket idea. Were you having any issues with the boat pulling to one side having only one bucket out? Would one bucket on each side work as well?
@edwardh10035 жыл бұрын
I also wanted to ask if the trolling bucket bangs up against the boat a bunch while you're trolling?
@tedk9144 Жыл бұрын
He did say that he had another bucket on the other side. Also, I would guess if he set the rope length to make the top of the bucket end up exactly flush with the stern of the boat, then likely would not have a problem, but I've not verified this myself personally though.
@edwardh1003 Жыл бұрын
@@tedk9144 I just realized that after watching the video again. That makes sense. I wonder if they would wobble not being stabilized up against the side of the boat.
@tedk9144 Жыл бұрын
Hmm, definitely possible on the wobble...guessing it could be further mimimized by securing it with a "Y" shaped rope with ends of the "Y: attached at 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions on the bucket.

he probably didnt need 80lb braid for those weights, but what does it hurt? ive been using alot of my own method for trolling, and getting by with what you have to save a couple dollars.. i have a 50hp 2 stroker on the back of my 16.5ft boat, but i use both my trolling motors to troll. not a whole lot of people have a big enough budget to buy a 4 stroke outboard. things are pricey as hell. also gps/chartplotter electronics are not expensive. the smallest humminbird gps/chartplotter can be bought around $100. a 55lb 12v tolling motor can be bought for less than $250. just a few hints for those of you who think you cant successfully troll for less than a couple thousand dollars on trolling gear, electronics, and motors..

Use 1/2 an old rod with line counter reel to act like a downrigger boom to keep line out and away from boat...Put in cheap rod holder to hold it.

Who can't afford a used $30 manual downrigger? I'm a firm believer on using the right tool for the job.
@fdyhdfhy6 жыл бұрын
Broxty $30? No way. Cheapest round here be $100-$150. $30!! I wish hahahaha

How fast do you need to troll minimum? I want to try targeting trout by trolling out of my float tube
@JamesSmith-gg7wj8 жыл бұрын
1-2mph
@JamesSmith-gg7wj8 жыл бұрын
But it depends on what your trolling with. live bait go a little slower. i usually go 1.5mph with a spoon or something like a big dave davis silver spoon i would go maybe 1.75 or so mph. also depends on your depth.

What do we do if we don't have a boat
@zzz7zzz97 жыл бұрын
you win. now that would be the true "broke man". i'm watching this thinking, wait, he has a boat, he ain't that broke. and if you have a boat, trolling is free. this was just alternate ways of slowing down your speed and getting your line down.
