This is a good one. I'm not familiar with M.R. Cosby but you just convinced me to buy his short story collection "Dying Embers." Slight spoilers: Some of my favorite "ghost stories" involve mental illness. The Yellow Wallpaper or the Turn of the Screw. Being haunted by a ghost would be terrifying, but haunting yourself would be like being in Hell.

Beautiful, bone chilling story. Reminds me of Aickman with a touch of Ligotti. It works as a ghost story, a mystery, a parable, a translucent character study, and a travelogue of the topography of dementia. Your narration is perfect, as usual.

Spoilers Below: Great narration and good story, I'm unsure if the protagonist killed his wife and now has some sort of mental issue or if he developed it after killing his wife. I also got the feeling that perhaps he's being haunted by his wife. His own also seems to know something happened to his mom.

Very creepy, loved your Aussie accent to. " Ghosts" of lost life and love and expectations- our only volunteer, hmm. Is karma at work ? This tale is something like that of John Metcalfe I thought. Resigned to his fate... Another atmospheric tale, great sound effects too and I mentioned your Aussie accent. What is it about the lighthouse, it's isolation, the legends of the creatures of the sea and the seduction of sailors? And the music! You always choose such brooding or " starry" music- your theme reminds me of The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker- a spooky, briney story about devotion- ? Thank you. Bravo and Namaste ( ah Rebecca - the book, The Trains Don't Stop Here is already in my basket! )

Great story. Could someone each time in the comments explain what has actually happened. In this one,had Stanley killed his wife and hid her behind the small door at the lighthouse?
@EnCryptedHorror2 жыл бұрын
Hi wesleypresley1000, with "weird" stories I'm often not sure what has happened since it's left ambiguous. What you said was certainly my interpretation (or one of them) and I suppose it was the ending I tried to suggest with my reading, but I can't honestly say it was the author's intention. With Stanley an unreliable narrator because of his dementia, it may be that he has simply returned to a location that feels emotionally closer to his (dead/missing?) wife, perhaps.
@wesleypresley10002 жыл бұрын
@@EnCryptedHorror Thanks so much. Yes,I did think myself that Stanley may have had dimentia because of the absence of his wife at his flat all through the story. Keeps our minds ticking over if nothing else😉 ATB mate.

@@EnCryptedHorrorThe fact the fisherman referred to seeing him arrive with Maggie but leave alone was kind of telling, perhaps they had argued about the crash that killed their first born as Stanley did refer to how Maggie had never brought up the subject asserting blame on Stanley himself before but then I also got the feeling their son knew his mother was dead. Excellent story+top quality narration (sorry just noticed comments are from a couple of years ago,maybe you'll still see it so I'll leave it)

Haha! I can't say I always get the stories, and I don't say I have the solution to this one. A bit like Robert Aickman stories, there may not even *be* a solution. I *do* have some theories and ideas if you'd like to hear them...?
@juliadia0072 жыл бұрын
@@EnCryptedHorror yes, I’d love to hear them!
@EnCryptedHorror2 жыл бұрын
@@juliadia007 Okay...before I give my take, two things struck me. There's a reference to a sign reading "To the lighthouse" which seemed too specifically worded not to be an allusion to the Virginia Woolf novel which deals with time, loss, death - also themes in this story. Secondly, I noticed some interesting things about weather in the story (the rain stopping as soon as Stanley gets out of the car) which I wondered whether they were deliberate inconsistencies like the continuity errors in that film "Shutter Island", letting you know that something's not right, that we are seeing some events through an unreliable narrator's perspective, or hopping between time periods. I suppose I read the story two ways. The dark version of events I have is that Stanley is a widower, how recent we don't know but possibly for some time. He's started having falls (bump on the head) and becoming forgetful. He mentions the past seeming more real than the present. What happened in that past? At some time after his son left home and it was just Stanley and Maggie, she (younger than him) started finding other interests and he felt left out. Resentment formed between them (partly owing to the unresolved trauma of losing their firstborn in the car accident) that came to a head one rainy day when they went to the lighthouse. There was an argument. She blamed him for everything. He hit her with a poker, killed her, hid her in the cellar behind the locked door. This wasn't weeks ago, but years ago. Up until this point she has been missing, presumed dead. As he aged and became more senile he has forgotten/suppressed the memory of this misdeed. But when he returns to the lighthouse and suffers a heart attack he is able to reach her ghost through a mobile phone with no connection. I don't suppose it matters why the room has his and Maggie's belongings in it. Maybe they're there because he's dying and crossing over into the spirit world. Maybe his fate is to finally face up to what he has done. Alternatively, this is a "something-going-on-in-the-mind" story. He doesn't kill Maggie at the lighthouse. They went there - to this place that had childhood significance for him - and had the argument about how the car crash was his fault - the argument that is essentially replayed over the radio static in the car. The all-seeing fishermen saw him come back from the lighthouse alone, not because he killed her, but because of the schism between them. Maggie was effectively the keeper of the memories and their things (including keeping the memory of the accident and their firstborn son), Stanley tried to run away from it, bury it, lock it away in a secret room with a key...eventually finding himself in an apartment in a residential care complex with no memories (literally, as well, as he starts to become forgetful). In this reading, I suppose, the ending could even be hopeful because he is reunited with Maggie in death. Other things I noted: static on the radio, feedback whine of the hearing aid, town called Nullingham - possibly from the electrical term in which (I think) combined signals have a nulling effect. I'm out. What did you make of it?
