I'm simultaneously relieved and disappointed that the hammer and chisel method wasn't used, and by disappointed I mean extremely relieved.

Never owned an Amiga (ST Rulez... ;) ) but always liked the look of the A600. More a spiritual successor to the C64.

My first Amiga was an A600, but it was a, 'gift', (so to speak), as it's what I bought with the money I got given for redecorating the front of my parents house, way back in 1992! I previously owned a C64, so went to Currys, (of all places), to see what computers they had to upgrade to. I only had enough for the A600 that was on offer and as I knew next to nothing about it, decided to buy it, there and then. It wasn't a bad machine to play games on, at the time, but after about a year I part exchanged it for an A1200 and got to realise the difference. Over the next few years, I upgraded it quite a bit with 8Mb of RAM, a 440Mb hard-disk, (that connected to the PCMCIA port), and a CD-ROM drive that used the ATAPI interface! The pièce de résistance was installing a 68060 co-processor that really beefed things up. For the mid 90's, it was a decent bit of kit!

13:30 I remember I had a whole box of graphics cards like that. when I wanted some chips off one of them, I literally just took some sort of pliers, and wiggled the chips off. It ripped a whole bunch of tracks off the board too, but the chips were in otherwise perfect condition to use in their new home. I mean, I had an entire box of about 50 of them, they were going into E-Waste.

I had an A600 back in the day, all my A500 owning friends were fascinated by it, especially how light the AC box was compared to theirs. But the only thing I didn't like about it was that I couldn't play Robocop 3 on it >.>

Ah the A600, a misunderstood machine, but a great little portable gamer now. Great video Lee, I've never seen the A600 need all those underside caps replacing before.

It was very strange! Wasnt just the ones on the bottom, there were a load on the top too! Does make me worry that others on different parts of the circuit are going to go faulty too.

The 600 was my first Amiga, everyone else had gotten 500/500+s the years before so for Christmas I got a A600. I loved it very much and took up a lot less desk space then my mates beast of a 500+ I upgraded the RAM, and added a second floppy. By the time 94 came around their was no point in upgrading it any more Commodore was done and it was clear the PC was going to take over. Nice repair mate, hope you enjoy many hours with it

A600's are a great wee machine, at least it doesn't take up a whole desk like the huge a500.. Also a nice option for clearing out the inside and putting a mister in ;)

My friend had an A500 and I wanted one too. When I finally managed to convince my parents to buy one, it wasn’t sold anymore but the A600 was. Got that instead and loved the machine! Sure, it had problems with some older games but Relokick 1.3 helped. Used it for years. I still have it and upgraded it to more modern standards (recapped too of course). Lovely computer, and these days a lot better than A500 in many ways, due to the expansion options.

The first Amiga I ever saw was a 600 at a friend's house, and I pestered my parents for one the next Christmas. I've got lots of nostalgia for it, and I always like its cut-down A1200 looks.

You can use the PCMCIA card with the memory expansion you just need to set it to a bit lower on the jumpers can't remember now either 4 or 6 mb...
@MoreFunMakingIt
@MoreFunMakingIt 5 ай бұрын
That works on my 1200, but this expansion is 4mb only. No jumpers to set. And since I made the video the ram has gone faulty! Will need to think again with that one
@keyboard_g
@keyboard_g 5 ай бұрын
Added fast ram only blocks the PCMCIA port functionality if you go over 8MB. You'll need some to run whdload games. Some cards even come with jumpers to downscale the fast mem so you can pick and choose how it works.

One of the main problems with the commodore machines was that upgrades often were incompatible with software (mainly games). Having progressed from ZX81 and BBC-B micro and master I got a 500+. Later I added a scsii hard drive on my 500+ but had to disable it to run many of my favourite games. I remember similar complaints from "lucky" people who had the money to upgrade to 1200s then found difficulties. Happily I had many years of Pinball Dreams / fantasies and Lemmings before I moved to P.C. (mainly due to demise of commodore leading to lack of new support and software). Good Times nevertheless

I'm torn, I love the A600 and that another Amiga was brought back. Disappointed that a retro GPU had to die to get those memory chips when chip memory upgrades with new hardware are readily available. Glad that the hot air delamination didn't totally destroy the board but, could that be the source of the flickering video?

I honestly wouldn't say the Amiga 600 is "Worst" than an A500. It's basically an A500+ in hardware, with the addition of PCMCIA and a built in IDE hard drive controller. It was only an issue if you actually wanted to use some of the existing hardware expansions (that didn't plug into the back ports, like a floppy drive), so for the people it was aimed at (Like my Dad who didn't have an Amiga at the time), it was a brilliant starter model. The 1200 is a lot better though.
