In this episode, Shane and Hannah argue about cashew butter, go grocery shopping, and do two major interviews with Inside Edition and ITV's This Morning. Shane gets puppy kisses on his feet, and Hannah swims at a swim meet! It was a busy week!

Shane was born with a neuromuscular disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy that requires him to use an electric wheelchair. He is the author of several award-winning books, the President of a nonprofit organization called Laughing At My Nightmare, and a renowned public speaker who has performed across the country at places such as Harvard University, The University of Florida, The University of Connecticut, Princeton University, and many more.
Hannah is a senior at Carleton College, studying sociology and anthropology. She works as a researcher for an educational consulting firm. Her future aspirations include attending law school and owning a goat sanctuary. She films and edits the “Squirmy and Grubs” vlog.
Shane and Hannah have been dating for over 2.5 years and living together in Minneapolis in recent months. Their interabled relationship often confuses people, because much of society still cannot fathom people with disabilities being involved in loving, intimate relationships. Anyone who watches these episodes will quickly see their relationship is just as “normal” as any other. Sure, Hannah helps Shane use the bathroom and brush his teeth, but those activities do not detract from the emotional, intellectual, and physical connection they experience together.

Oh watching your swim meet brought me back!! My daughter was a swimmer from age 5 through college at Ohio State. Her best individual events were the 200m back, 200m fly, and the 400m IM. (Of course there was also the free and medley relays - but those, obviously, aren't individual events). You looked great! I miss watching her swim. She did Masters for awhile afterwards until she got pregnant with their first child. Swimming always kept her in great shape and gave her so much strength. She is 40 now and is a UPS driver in Colorado and I think all those years of fly developed lasting strength to be able to do such a physical job.

I can so relate to Shane’s complaint about dealing with health insurance! I’ve had leukemia for two years, and my chemo drug is $180,000 a year. I also have a kidney autoimmune disease. So I’m in and out of doctor’s offices and labs all the time. I pay for my own health insurance out of pocket and then have to fight for every penny of coverage. It’s a mess!

Yes! I'm in a similar boat. Because I'm disabled, people assume I don't have to work. But I average 19 hours a week fighting with insurance, which I would call a job. It's insane. And they deny you for completely arbitrary reasons every time.

I’m 19 right now and still have it (actually I just had to do to the SSI and have an evaluation, they haven’t called yet) but as soon as I turned 18 they started calling about it. I have Osteogenesis Imperfecta (brittle bone disease) so I can’t walk/stand for a few minutes without possibly fracturing my legs. I laugh too hard and break ribs, don’t know how they think I could deal with that lol. I have rods in my back, plate in my neck, rods in both my legs. I actually turned 18 in the hospital which was awful. It was a simple dentist surgery, but they couldn’t get the breathing tube down and ended up dying for 20 minutes and had an emergency tracheotomy done. They infuriate me!

My therapist really helped show me that managing a disability, including appointments, pharmacy visits, insurance, and just daily healthcare, it's literally a part time job. I spend about 25-30 hours a week on healthcare related stuff. That clip about dealing with insurance is the most relevant thing I've seen on KZbin. 🙏🏻

So, Shane, I’m very curious about your medical issues and how you deal with them. Do you get regular physical therapy, or only when things aren’t going well? Do you ever have medical crises that land you in the hospital? Do you have to take a lot of medications? Are there other illnesses or physical issues that are a result of your SMA? These questions are prompted by you and Liz sitting and dealing with your insurance claims. I know what a trial that can be. You’re probably past the age where you are covered by your parents’ insurance, so did you have to buy your own policy, as someone who is self-employed? Also, I’m glad your tv interviews went well. Hope you were able to go back home and back to bed!

Mindy Vaughn I’m about 8 hours north of Minneapolis in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Minneapolis has similar weather, but it’s WARMER! It’s a lot of fun to drive south and watch the temperature rise. Being this cold also means it’s very DRY. There’s no moisture in the air. Our skin can crack because it dries out. I don’t know why I live where the air hurts my face. 😂 🥶

Christine Lee Hello Canada!! It blows my mind when you say Minneapolis is warmer but I have been to Canada (in summer). Prince William Hotel, Lake Louise, Banff, I think I may have spelled that wrong. It was the most beautiful countryside while we drove. So pristine. Everyone was so nice. I want to come back. It is even cooler getting to hear about Winnipeg...get my joke? Anyway, thank you for my visit. I lived in Montana many years ago (18) and my face has never been so cold. My nose bled for weeks until I got used to it. But it was my favorite place to live. I would go up to Lethbridge, Canada for lunch and shopping when I went to see my Native American clients on the Blackfeet reservation in Browning, Montana. I lived in Great falls, Mt. I’m always interested in a note from Canada. Take Care and Good Luck in school.💖

Winnipeg is MUCH colder than out West! Us Winnipegers are super cool ;) Haha! Canada in the summer, Winnipeg anyways, is super hot! We get 86-95°F days! I've only ever visited Banff and Lake Louise during the Winter months for snowboarding, and it was far more mild temperatures. My nose bleeds every.single.winter. It's such a struggle! You'll have to come visit Winnipeg, one day! We're known as "friendly Manitoba"! :D @@mindyvaughn8217
