Ground was floating. Whenever the capacitors charged the voltage difference between VCC and the floating ground became too small to act as ground and the receiver shut down. The precise time was due to the predictable charge rate of the capacitors.

I suspected as such. Capacitors are really good at creating Frankenstein-circuits that only live for a few seconds if no true path to ground exists. 🧟♂️ I suppose a bigger capacitor would extend the on-time. 🙃

I seen it but thought maybe it was a NC (Not Connected), which sometimes you do get, but when he found the pad itself was connected to ground, I knew it Should of been connected. Normally, if it was a NC the pad wouldn't be connected to anywhere.

Brilliant (literally)! When we were kids (in the 80s), we'd take our regular plastic toy cars and put a motor and lights (from Christmas lights of course 😉) in them and make our own remote controlled cars, though they were really just controlled by a long wire to a 9V battery since no way we had the skills to make radio controlled ones. It's so cool you added the lights, reminded me so much of back then! 👍

Hey Vince. I got a confession to make. I was watching your videos for couple years now learning as you learn. I'm really an amateur on these things, but have done myself just a handful of repairs. I was so proud today that I actually pinpointed (or thought this might be it) THE fault on this Lamborghini repair. I saw the unsure solder joint and the first thing I would do is to try to solder it back on, before I would do any measurements! You can't imagine how proud I am today!! All mainly thanks to you and your videos! GREAT JOB!

@timvangenechten52583 жыл бұрын
If you do not have the correct connector then a female dupont connector(like the ones used on arduino and Raspberry Pi boards) would probably do the trick. Its not perfect but it would work fine if you do not have the correct ones. The unsoldered pad looked suspicious but at a first glance you would expect it to be unused. But when you started measuring and could not find any other pin that was connected to ground, I was pretty sure you found the problem. Once again, great job. Its not about the value of what you repair, its about the value of what you learned and the satisfaction of creating/fixing something. So satisfying!

brilliant fix, but still doesn't explain why it only worked for 3 seconds, unless heat in the chip was lifting the chip off the board.
@davidmelbourne54803 жыл бұрын
When the ground to the receiver IC was left floating, it would start to rise the moment drive current to the other IC (prob. a uProcessor) was required. I too, was screaming at the screen the moment I saw the pad under the leg! Contaminant on IC leg/pad which avoided the flow solder process or sloppy hand work perhaps.
@Mymatevince3 жыл бұрын
Still not sure, I don't think heat would cause it to lift as it seems so perfectly timed to shut off. Another viewer mentioned it may have been taking another path into the chip before failing or a charged capacitor ????? Hopefully some more comments will come in to verify the problem 👍👍👍
@tiporari3 жыл бұрын
@@Mymatevince Floating ground. You can ground a circuit to a positive voltage, and as long as the difference between the two is sufficient the circuit will work. Imagine hooking a 3V bulb between +9v and +6 volts. It will see 3V in circuit and work fine. In this case your ground was at 0V until car turned on. The capacitor it was referenced to charges up to VCC or some derived voltage and when the differential gets too small the floating ground is no longer sufficient. Three seconds was the time required for the caps to charge enough to lose a virtual or floating ground reference that was adequate.

Every chip needs to be grounded, or there will be no pathway for the signals and voltage to take. As soon as I saw that ground pin (and, mind you, the *only* ground pin on that chip) not being soldered, I knew that the problem was exposed. That chip was effectively disabled. Current could enter, but not exit, so it doesn’t enter at all. Still, if that chip was important for the RC car to work at all, it shouldn’t have worked at all. Something else must be the cause for the three-second runtime (maybe the current took a different path through that chip, but that would be awfully bad for the chip’s longevity). A capacitor may’ve been involved as it would allow that current to go there until it filled up, at which point the voltage gradient would drop too low for the chip to remain functional.
