Broken oil dipstick removal - How to fix

I never got my dipstick broken or stuck! Thank goodness. Paivi, only you and Ron could make changing a dipstick into a very interesting and, well, fun video. Also, now we all know what to do when our dipsticks get stuck!

Great Video! If the screw didn't work I would heated up the end of a metal coat hanger white hot and melted it into the broken plastic end letting it cool before pulling it out.

Good job Ron. I guess the surface of the break had become coated with a film of oil that stopped the hot glue holding. Its been wet and cold this side of the pond - I wish spring would hurry up and arrive! Have a great week my friend.

Thanks Rob, I should of cleaned it with brake cleaner and it might of worked, Yes come on Spring we had little snow this year but wet and cold, but its slowly starting to warm up. Have a great week my friend !

Dam dip sticks. I figure that it will probably happen on my Honda some day because it’s always falling apart nicely. That really sucks if the dip stick didn’t pull out. That’s nice trick to know with the drill & the drywall screw procedure. I would have glued a epoxy weld around the new dip stick & handle for insurance for next breakage event. Maybe I’ll do it on my Honda dip Stick. Sorry to hear Ron about your 15 minute oil change job went so bad.

Oh man, I wish i could of seen the look on my face when it came off in my hand...lol... Being able to by a replacement at the local parts store tells me this is a common problem. With this car nothing surprises me, one day we had a light freezing rain and i pulled the driver side door handle off. Now that one i shook my head over and was fun to change...lol.... Happened to me yesterday. What worked for me. Drill with very small bit. Slowly insert a long course screw. Clamp on screw with Locking Pliers with one hand and heat the top one inch portion of the dipstick tube with a long Candle Lighter. It was loose and pulled out within 10 seconds.

My sister owned a 92 Nissan Sentra. I performed all her oil changes on it. This never happen to the 92 because it had a full metal oil dip stick. She later for a 2001 Sentra and this happened to it twice so far. Nissan even issued a service builtin for it. They recommend using a shop vacuum to remove it. They are idiots. There is no reason why this happens on newer and not older cars. They should just go back to the full metal ones. Since the idiots won't, your best prevention is to put oil around the shaft of the top of the oil dip stick to properly lubricate it from keeping it from sticking to the walls of the tube.

Plan Z: Remove the PCV Valve then insert an Air Compressor. The force of the Air will pop the stuck dipstick out !

Hi Peter, Yes that would work but you can also blow the seals out and I would rather just buy a $10 dipstick and be done with it.

Tried the screw. It is firmly into the yellow part of the broken dip stick . (thank you idiots at the oil change place for making my life miserable). It is shoved in so far it will not budge. H E L P !!!!! What now? Oil light comes on and that is how I discovered dip stick was BROKEN. Again thank you men for doing this and not owning up to it. ANY THOUGHTS on how to remove this? Tried a little heat on the side of the tube and that did not work either.

First if your oil light is on, I think your safe to add some oil. I think heating the tube was a good idea. I have seen videos that show people using compressed air through the pcv vale whole in the valve cover but you chance blowing a seal on the engine. If its not moving you might be money ahead and take it to a shop. Sorry this way did not help you, my dip stick moved easy in the tube.

@@FawadMasud If you don't have a check engine light on and your engine is not making a lot of noise. I dont think the dipstick will fall into the pan by driving it to a shop.
