I've come back to watching your videos after a few years gap. I built my computer using your videos and it was successful. Now the power supply has gone wrong, and I had to look at the cost of cleaning (it's very dusty indeed) and replacing the PSU, so I have abandoned it and have bought a minicomputer, moving from a i5 to an i9 as it was almost the same price as servicing the old machine! I'm definitely going to start watching again and look forward to more of the same. Many thanks for your videos Carey. Most enjoyable.

Good old gen 4. Had one for about 7 years and passed it over to a friend who was in need of a computer. To my knowledge, it's still working to this day. That machine had an i7 4770K and a Hyper 212 on a 650W Corsair power supply. Nice catch. Amazing what most shops will miss. I've seen shops fire the parts cannon and miss the fact that they forgot to remove the plastic sticker on the bottom of the CPU heat sink. Have seen plenty of front panel wiring connected wrong. Messy wiring birdnested into fans. Fans all pointing in, fans all pointing out.. (Why is it over heating? I have 11 fans!) Don't get me started on older CLCs that have gelled up or leak....

Honesty is the best policy. I service computers for church friends and their referrals not as a business, but because of my knowledge. I ran into an exact incident like this. On another situation I encountered a lady who had purchased a used computer from a small local repair shop. I noticed she had a pirated copy of Windows among other things and told her she paid too much for a piece of junk. I suggested she go back to the shop and ask for a refund and tell the guy she was going to make a few phone calls if he didn't make her request. She had no problem getting her money back and asking me for my help choosing a new computer. However, simple things can be hard to determine. In your case a $700 dollar board would not have solved the problem. That would be like a car repair where the mechanic changes (and charges for) parts until he gets the problem fixed.

Dang, the cheapest $700 replacement I've ever seen. Now I know this video has to be very old but still, imagine that "repair shop" replacing the MB and charging for that and it not fixing anything.
@LatitudeSkyКүн бұрын
@zaphod8810 Must be a bit old. The Hyper212 was a great cooler but the was is the issue. There are now smaller, cheaper and better air coolers. Not knocking the 212. Ran one from 2014 to 2021. It was great for its era. It's still great if it's all you have. And I guess this one was free so nothing wrong with that.

After all he did to that I would probably use my old sledge hammer fix. I'm glad I can tackle most stuff like this, but I don't think I could have figured out that it was the reset switch causing all this problem. I still don't know exactly how it was causing it to shut down, but clearly it did. I didn't even know that was an actual thing that could do something like that. I definitely learned something from this.

I had an intermittent switching off problem on an old Asus, sometimes it would run for hours, other times minutes. I spent months trying to fix it because it was so intermittent. It turned out to be a poor connection on the 24-pin plug from the power supply, I re-tensioned and cleaned the connectors and it's been going for a year now.
@insparks782Күн бұрын
I made a rookie mistake with my 24 pin too when I rebuilt my system in a new case. When I did my cable management I didn't notice that I'd pulled the 24-pin cable so it wasn't quite seated properly. It was maybe 1mm out to one side. I was confused why Windows wasn't booting quickly, and my CPU was running way slower than base clock too. The CPU was literally getting the bare minimum voltage it needed to boot, but no more. Once I'd figured out what was up and fixed the cables, everything ran perfectly fine thereafter.

Ran into something similar with a PC that would randomly shut down ... sometimes weeks apart, sometimes minutes. Turned out it was random because it was due to ambient vibration causing the case to short against the motherboard. Just not enough clearance. Replaced case, problem solved.
