Great repair especially the crack in the axle at 23:23 that will really hold its own on the way to the scrapyard.

Absolutely, these gentlemen invest absurd amounts of time into these ridiculous repairs, then have the nerve to charge folks for them. Only to watch them break on the way out of the parking lot. No doubt this the nature of this occupation is contingent on the colloquialism "a sucker is born everyday".

Interesting to watch at 2x speed. But why not face bore the plate 3 inches deep? Then drive a 1" x 3" pin into the bore. Then weld & clean up that weld. Much stronger repair that might actually holdup for a while.

Center pins are much preferrable to stacked weld..i agree. They can easily be made… Im thinking that moving to using them and then doing some flashback videos regarding longevity could be a hit among us folk who LOVE these videos! Obviously there is some longevity in these repairs because more and more of them are being done. I wonder, what are they charging for this repair? How many actual manhours go into it? How many rods used? There are many ways to upgrade/expand these videos! Adding the vehicles the parts belong to would be a awesome upgrade!

I absolutely love this!!!! In america we are SOOO conditioned to believe the you MUST have ALL of the right tools for the job to be successful, many times it prevents us from ever trying. Can you imagine someone being taught to stick weld with a hand held mask.

I was thinking along the same lines as you although not so much on what they were using to weld but how basic and rudimentary the shop is as a whole. Maybe minus that expensive Lathe they’ve got (Although Harbor Freight has ‘em cheap these days) it makes a garage guy like me feel like I could almost do what they are doing at my house. Of course I don’t have the probably years of experience working with lathes and welding as I would assume these guys have got. But still. They seem to get by with what seems so much less as far as do dads and do hickies in and around them. As you can tell I’m not a welder but I’ve worked in and around enough maintenance repair shops both military and private to know and realize these guys are accomplishing things on a shoestring budget.

Another way is to cut down the wheel hub interface by say 1/4 inch. Lathe the broken shaft end . Lathe a center hole through the plate flange. Press fit the shaft into the flange 1/4 inch and weld both sides. Axle tube may have to be trimmed down a bit but no more than 1/4 inch. Caseharden the weld with bone ash.

Another example of no heat treatment following a welding process. That shaft is a spring-like metal and designed to take a torsional load. The welding process has deposited not just a mild steel but the heat has also affected the torsional strength of the splined shaft where it meets the flange. The result is that once a torsional load is applied, the new welded section will twist like a stick of toffee. The repair could be adequate but instead a repair is done that looks awesome but is in fact almost useless.

It's obvious that these men are proud of their work. Given the primitive working conditions and total lack of personal protective equipment it is a wonder no one gets seriously injured. However, stick welding a heat treated, drop forged axle is not an effective repair and certainly is not a "restoration". Axles, pinion gears and other high stress items are drop forged for a reason , namely to create a continuous grain structure in the steel. Heat treatment ensures it stays strong without being too brittle. Welding this using what looks like 6011 or 6013 mild steel rod will look good after cleanup but will undoubtedly break at the first application of torque. The filler material from the rod is too soft and the heat affected zone will be brittle and crack. Sorry to sound critical but that is the reality of a repair like this.

I've seen stuff like this done in Bangladesh too, the cost of labour usually works out in terms of time/price balance even if it's repaired more than once - since it's usually a fraction of the cost of a new part. These guys work hard to get the best out of the resources they have even if it means going the extra mile.

It looks like a much better repair than the previous one (you could see the voids from previous welding) Only problem is, the heat affected area of shaft is what failed and will probably fail agian although it should last longer than before if truck driver isn't brutal or too overloaded.
