While on holiday in Paris, American tourist George Stobbart witnesses an assassin dressed as a clown steal an old man's briefcase from inside a café and kill him with a bomb.
Having his holiday spoiled by the explosion, George decides to investigate the whole matter on his own.
He meets and teams up with photo-journalist Nicole Collard who was supposed to meet the man called Plantard and is investigating a string of assassinations involving the same person in different costumes.
Gorge finds several clues leading to the murderer in the Paris sewers that the assassin used to escape.
Strangely enough, the local police are not too eager to investigate.
When leaving the sewers George meets the butler called Albert who is only willing to cooperate when George pretends to be from the police.
Nevertheless, he got some interesting information that he needs to share with his new partner Nicole.
