I have over 30 years of full and part time rv repair, you learn a lot along the along the way, with the newer units put together with glue and staples it's a real challenge. I have had much luck with older rigs, back when they made them to last. When I look back to when I was a kid traveling around with my familie towing a early 50's 35x8 foot Fireball trailer, I often think of how well they were made, heavy but bullet proof, now days, it's rolling junk coming off the assembly lines, shameful.

This video made me smile. Been there, fixed that on so many of the items mentioned. Came from the cruising boating world so being self reliant is nothing new. So far 15 years of almost six months per year on the road. Four trips to Alaska. Trip number two to Newfoundland planned for this year, 22. We are rarely anywhere longer than a few days so everything is well used. All kinds of spares are carried onboard, even a spare axle. Best accessory onboard is the navigator in the right seat. She knows what tools are & is not afraid to get her hands dirty.

There is always something breaking and needing fixed on a RV. I have found that the bigger the RV the bigger the problems and more repairs needed. Tom from enjoy the journey is finding this out with his new bigger rig. I find you have to enjoy the challenges that come along when RVing. I am glad everybody shares their challenges on KZbin that way we all can learn from each other.

(The same keys I realized I had already picked up and was carrying around with me in my left hand the entire time. Doh! Absolutely crazy! If the RV was built correctly you wouldn’t have all these problems. Like anything else you will have problems but ....... We have been in our class a for nearly 8 years and the only issues we have had is the water pump and step motor which is to be expected. If you look in the inside it looks modern and almost new. It sounds like you were calling Grand Design once a month. Anyway good for your to keep smiling not sure we could do the same.

We really love your channel, you guys are awesome, we have been on the road for many years and still learn something new from every one of your videos. Everything you say is well thought out, thoroughly researched, and we can relate to it all. Leaf Springs - Our first experience with a broken leaf spring, on a new rig, was about 2 1/2 years in at about 15,000 miles of towing. Found a trailer parts dealer, bought 4 new spring packs ( 2 axle rig) for about $150 and $50 for new shackle nuts and bolts at NAPA and 3 hours later - all new springs - on the road again. Research of the subject suggested replacing the springs every 12.000 miles or so.....what a concept! If you spend much time towing in places like the 4 corners area you know how bad the whoop-de-dos can beat up your rig, so our new maintenance schedule for the mobility portion of our rig includes (at a minimum), new springs, wheel bearings, races, seals, grease and electric brakes every 12,000 towed miles or once a year, which ever comes first. Heck, while you have the wheels off, the whole process only takes 6 or 7 hours and about $600 (or less) for spindles out replacement parts. Might as well rotate the tires while you have them off. We consider this a small investment for helping insure not being stranded on the side of a lonely (or busy) road trying to repair damage to what is arguably some of the most important parts of your rig. This process also gives us a up close and personal visit with the under side of the rig, the tires & wheels, spindles, electric brake wiring, frame, equalizers, axles, leaks, underbelly, etc.. We usually save out at least one set of springs and a hub assembly from the "old parts"as an emergency "spare" in case the unthinkable happens. This process also seems to improve towing mpg slightly, tire longevity, as well peace of mind. Please keep up the wonderful content and we will see y'all on the road.

This is hands down the most realistic and pragmatic video and approach to the RV culture. I explain to people that you have to be a bit of a do it yourself right to enjoy an RV. Otherwise you would be camping in the parking lot of your service center frequently. Slide toppers are really easy for you to do yourself. But it takes two, A can of silicone spray, and a ladder. I just did two on my coach and they came out great. Total time involved less than two hours. Just have patience one guy feeds the leading edge into the groove and the other guy pulls it through. One on the ground and one on the roof. Love your video. Well done. I subscribed.

Mobile tech guy helped me by phone diagnosis and then a temporary fix to get me on the road. NEW GAS CANS suck! Easy fix though. Throw all the EPA stuff away and go to a Tractor Supply or auto parts store. They sell a universal kit with all the old school parts to make the thing pour gas like it is supposed to.

Hey there, I just watched your video on the broken stuff, very interesting. As a recommendation, I built my wife a sewing table into an old armoire and I used piano hinges for the table top that’s able to fold up into the armoire when it’s not being used. The reason I mention this, is order the piano hinge for the size of the platform, they are super sturdy and very reliable to maintain weight because every inch or so has a screw hole. They aren’t cheap, but I’d you need to do hinge work again, I’d highly recommend that, since they are designed to hold some serious weight of the grand piano lid. I’m looking at buying the 397TH or 399TH because of your videos - very good content.

Had to laugh watching your video. My truck camper is over 45 years old. So is the truck. Only once did I break down. The fuel pump went in the desert. The $7 fuel pump cost me $30. Mechanic said because I installed an auxiliary fuel tank the pump had to work harder. The only other repair was the screen door, because of my dog, which looked just like yours. I lived in the camper for over a year, traveling around the country. Have a standard cab with 8 foot bed. 9 1/2 camper. Sometimes I pull a 19 foot boat at the same time. The truck is a heavy 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive with a camper package. It came from the factory with 1 ton springs and rears. Factory tie downs and dual batteries. The camper is set up for 12 volts. The frig was changed to a boat frig, so I don’t have to be level for it to work. I can plug the camper into 110 and the frig works a bit better. I had an evaporator put in the center hatch. No TV or microwave or generator. Added longer folding steps on the camper. The truck I added an auxiliary transmission cooler, a transgo shift kit, a 28 gallon auxiliary fuel tank, headers and dual exhaust. I still have a halon fire extinguisher, small tool box, tram diamond 60 CB with ssb (even have cb license!), 3 reflectors behind the seat, air pump ( have to take spark plug out to use pump) 96” cb antenna when camper is off the truck, and a small box containing points, condensor, flat screwdriver and matchbook cover. Almost forgot, a hand held 12v spotlight and a 300 millawatt walkietalkie -3 channel (for use as an intercom if someone ride in the camper) Never had a flat tire. Only knew gadget I would consider getting is a truck gps. Many places we go, it’s hard to find street signs, or states change the route numbers to names, which are not on our maps. Your new fangled campers have more comforts, but more headaches. The newer truck campers are too high and all have a longer overhang. They are made for super and crew cab trucks. One problem I have is they way people drive. Cut in front of me and hit the brakes. I can’t swerve! Am thinking about putting a tow truck style bumper on the front, so when I hit them, I’ll push them instead of flipping over. Also maybee a better dash cam.

Love all the good , honest experiences. You definitely need to be handy to own an RV or it will soon own you. Luxury items always cost a lot to maintain if you need to depend on others to do it. On the tie downs, I don’t know if you ever saw it, but look up a product called “ The Biker Bar”. Real nice unit. There is a website and Utube videos. So far I haven’t wrecked anything on our new unit, but they go thru a lot in travel and they are still minimally made. No matter what brand. Thanks guys

Had the same challenge with our Grand Design Imagine awning light, like you said easy fix when you finally figure our where the fuse is located. Love our Grand Design too!

We have a Jayco Pinnacle 2019 and have had plenty of issues. I feel your pain. Glad to see you are so cheerful about these issues.

How has Jayco been to work with on the issues? Can you work directly with them?

@@ChangingLanes A little calling but yes, we keep the Reps. name and number. On the major issue, we had was a recall that was not disclosed when bought. The company made good but the dealer was Horrible.

I just found your channel and love it. We have recently downsized from a 54-foot rig being pulled by my Peterbilt to a small 42-foot rig being pulled by my 3500 Dodge. We are absolutely loving and enjoying the smaller size especially for getting into some of the more cramped campgrounds. Love your vids... keep up the good work :)

Glass Doors on Cabinets! I just bought a new Airstream. Wife and I really liked the higher end models until we saw the glass cabinet doors. They looked like major trouble when going down the road. We decided to go with the Flying Cloud because it had wooden doors on the cabinets. We still remove things and place them in tote's for traveling. So far no scratches on the Aluminum skin inside the cabinets or on the wooden doors. We didn't get the leather seats either, but I can recover them myself using the same leather that Airstream features on the more expensive models for thousands less than the cost different between our model and the model that featured the leather.

I always look forward to your videos, because most often I learn something that might help me out down the road. This time it was the fuses inside the microwave! Go figure! You guys rock!

Great video. A good reminder that anything can break and need fixing. Also good to hear that we have a top notch RV service dealer here in Wisconsin. Almost makes me want to take the 3 hour drive over there for my next RV purchase. F.Y.I... Coulee is pronounced as "Coolee", as in "thats a 'cool' place to visit"...

Sure seems worth a drive! Great people there! 👍🏼

All new RV's will break, what makes Grand Design different, they back up their product. My gas regulator broke somewhere between Rapid City and F.E. Warren AFB, the mobile tech came out and fixed it, couldn't fix the water leak, fixed that one myself. GD reimbursed the entire expense. I will definitely buy another from GD. Oh, I am also very impressed with the insulation, I've camped at Ft. Dodge at 107 degrees, inside got to the low 80's but bearable. Also camped at 20 degrees, comfortable on the inside at 70. I am very sure I could go to 0, but next time I will order double paned windows. The heat is ducted to keep anything from freezing as long as you are running off the tanks, I am so impressed so far. If GD is reading, how about making double paned windows standard? Would work in both heat and cold.

They say the dual pane windows don't make that much difference. Only about 1%. I agree with you, they should be standard or at least be included in the artic package. Otherwise I love my 2020 Grand Design Solitude 375res.
