Over the course of our first two years on the road, we've had a few things break, and we've broken a few things ourselves. Everything from running into signs and trees to crushing our pantry door. We've made some mistakes! RVs, by nature, just tent to break also. It's just an RV thing whether you're in a million-dollar Prevost, or a$10K Pop-up. Most just fall into the Sh$% Happens category!
In this video, we cover every single thing that has broken or we broke:
Pin Box
Furnace
Tail Light Wiring
Body / Paint Damage
Slide Ski
Slide Topper
Pantry Door Crushed by Kitchen Slide
Cabinet Door Frost Scratches
Awning Light Fuses
Garage Tie-Downs
Fuel Pump
Hydraulic Systems Fuse
Levelers Popping
Front CAP LEDs
Microwave / Convection Oven
Under-Bed Storage Hinges
Screen Door
Fireplace Squeaking
Awning Arm Caps
MaxAir Fan Cover Lift
Leaf Spring!
Big giant shout out to Grand Design RV for having such great customer support that we know they have out back while under warranty.
And a HUGE Bonus thank you to Coulee Region RV Center for some AMAZING last-minute support!

I have over 30 years of full and part time rv repair, you learn a lot along the along the way, with the newer units put together with glue and staples it's a real challenge. I have had much luck with older rigs, back when they made them to last. When I look back to when I was a kid traveling around with my familie towing a early 50's 35x8 foot Fireball trailer, I often think of how well they were made, heavy but bullet proof, now days, it's rolling junk coming off the assembly lines, shameful.

I've had some if not most of the same problems. Broken door from the slide out, yep done that. Busted taillight from backing into a post, done that. Scratch down the side from my own mailbox! Dumb mistakes really hurt my feeling and pride but I sure learned from them. Dang hydraulic fuse got me on a Sunday morning! Mobile tech guy helped me by phone diagnosis and then a temporary fix to get me on the road. NEW GAS CANS suck! Easy fix though. Throw all the EPA stuff away and go to a Tractor Supply or auto parts store. They sell a universal kit with all the old school parts to make the thing pour gas like it is supposed to.

Welcome to RV'ing! The lady of the house way patient about getting things fixed right away!! My now x-wife was not patient, she didn't know what the word meant!! Look for older gas cans at garage sales, no EPA .... do watch for rust in the metal gas cans as well as leaks.

So true. And it's also useful to take whatever the marketing numbers are for anything structure-related and multiply them by 20% to get real-world values. So if they say they have a tie-down rated at 2,500 lbs., anything exceeding 500 lbs. is going to tear it up, sometimes even less. If they say you have insulation that is R40, that means you should expect and trust no more than R8 performance in severe weather. It's just the nature of a largely unregulated, aesthetics- and hype-driven industry with little real engineering involved.

There is always something breaking and needing fixed on a RV. I have found that the bigger the RV the bigger the problems and more repairs needed. Tom from enjoy the journey is finding this out with his new bigger rig. I find you have to enjoy the challenges that come along when RVing. I am glad everybody shares their challenges on KZbin that way we all can learn from each other.

@@ChangingLanes - Yeah, it really hurt to see that happen. I was surprised he didn't have the jack stands partially down and did a tug test before pulling out but these things happen. You'll not hear me judging given that I walked around in a panic looking for my truck keys for a half hour. (The same keys I realized I had already picked up and was carrying around with me in my left hand the entire time. Doh! LOL) Then there was the time I walked around for [again] a half hour looking for my eyeglasses before I realized I was "seeing pretty well" for not having glasses on. Yeah, you guessed it... We really love your channel, you guys are awesome, we have been on the road for many years and still learn something new from every one of your videos. Everything you say is well thought out, thoroughly researched, and we can relate to it all. Leaf Springs - Our first experience with a broken leaf spring, on a new rig, was about 2 1/2 years in at about 15,000 miles of towing. Found a trailer parts dealer, bought 4 new spring packs ( 2 axle rig) for about $150 and $50 for new shackle nuts and bolts at NAPA and 3 hours later - all new springs - on the road again. Research of the subject suggested replacing the springs every 12.000 miles or so.....what a concept! If you spend much time towing in places like the 4 corners area you know how bad the whoop-de-dos can beat up your rig, so our new maintenance schedule for the mobility portion of our rig includes (at a minimum), new springs, wheel bearings, races, seals, grease and electric brakes every 12,000 towed miles or once a year, which ever comes first. Heck, while you have the wheels off, the whole process only takes 6 or 7 hours and about $600 (or less) for spindles out replacement parts. Might as well rotate the tires while you have them off. We consider this a small investment for helping insure not being stranded on the side of a lonely (or busy) road trying to repair damage to what is arguably some of the most important parts of your rig. This process also gives us a up close and personal visit with the under side of the rig, the tires & wheels, spindles, electric brake wiring, frame, equalizers, axles, leaks, underbelly, etc.. We usually save out at least one set of springs and a hub assembly from the "old parts"as an emergency "spare" in case the unthinkable happens. This process also seems to improve towing mpg slightly, tire longevity, as well peace of mind. Please keep up the wonderful content and we will see y'all on the road.

I live in Pinellas County camping Ft DeSoto probably ten times a year. Maneuvering a massive 5th wheel (or Class A) in there requires a very high skill level. Site selection is critical. Remember checking in few months ago when another guest asked about Site #XXX possibly damaging his rig. Park Ranger said "don't know," and I piped in "don't go." Dude did not even bother to go look first. The massive ego pulled the massive rig in, and (wait for it)...CRUNCH, CRUNCH, CRUNCH. Yep, the bigger the ego the smaller the brain.

All new RV's will break, what makes Grand Design different, they back up their product. My gas regulator broke somewhere between Rapid City and F.E. Warren AFB, the mobile tech came out and fixed it, couldn't fix the water leak, fixed that one myself. GD reimbursed the entire expense. I will definitely buy another from GD. Oh, I am also very impressed with the insulation, I've camped at Ft. Dodge at 107 degrees, inside got to the low 80's but bearable. Also camped at 20 degrees, comfortable on the inside at 70. I am very sure I could go to 0, but next time I will order double paned windows. The heat is ducted to keep anything from freezing as long as you are running off the tanks, I am so impressed so far. If GD is reading, how about making double paned windows standard? Would work in both heat and cold.

This video made me smile. Been there, fixed that on so many of the items mentioned. Came from the cruising boating world so being self reliant is nothing new. So far 15 years of almost six months per year on the road. Four trips to Alaska. Trip number two to Newfoundland planned for this year, 22. We are rarely anywhere longer than a few days so everything is well used. All kinds of spares are carried onboard, even a spare axle. Best accessory onboard is the navigator in the right seat. She knows what tools are & is not afraid to get her hands dirty.

1. My RV Works YT Channel has lots of DIY videos. Darren has some awning and topper R&R videos which you may find helpful. 2. A TDR (Time Domain Reflectometer) preferable with alligator clips to test 2 conductors can help pinpoint where the wire open or short is. I like to shoot the pair of conductors in both directions, from the source then device, to help locate the fault. Also a toner and wand is useful. Some times you get lucky and the fault is accessible for repair. 3. Double sided foam tape, AKA Pressure Sensitive Tape, besides being applied to a warm, clean and dry surface, needs to have pressure applied for at least for 15 seconds. Press and hold for 15 Mississippi.

Hi guys. Things ive broken or "just broke" while on the road? Ive had broken LCI control module, slide would not come out, no trailer brakes, bad 7 way trailer plug and no running lights. TV fell off its mount and shattered, 3000w inverter failed. A broken cabinet hinge. One of the three glass doors in the shower shattered while traveling. Fireplace flame wheel made a grinding sound. Toilet that wouldn't shut off, two slide topper shoulder ends damaged, a blackout slow-rise shade spring and Prewired Backup camera was NOT prewired. All this is on a 40ft. 5th wheel with 4 years of travel on it. Broken stuff WILL happen to all of us if you travel long enough. Thanks for sharing. Its always good to know we are not the only ones out there that has broken stuff.

I agree with you on all the safety crap on gas cans. I always keep an eye out for the olde, sturdier cans with a spout with a cap and a small vacuum release cap on the opposite side. The good old days. I guess we have Ralph Nader to thank for all these crazy safety features that makes everything more complicated.

I totally agree with you about the earthquake thing. The roads are horrible. Especially bridges and overpasses. It seems like there is a dip in the road before and after. The garage in our 5th wheel is like the last car on a roller coaster. This video is a great help, as a matter of fact, all of your videos help us. I must have watched the video about our gray/black tanks 4 or 5 times. I finally copied your whiteboard pictures so I know what tank our water is going into.

We just added the new 80 amp resettable breaker on our hydraulics as well and took the ground right to the battery and they work great now 😇 I also added the torque forklift additive first day we got it so no popping or chattering as well.

Very good video. You make it so inviting to go full time. We own a 2019 Raptor 425, had our usual Gremlins too. Keystone has been great to work with, Gander RV not so much. Our warranty obligation is over with them, time to move on. Happy Camping folks

I am glad you have had a good experience with Grand Design. We purchased a 2021 Reflection Series 150 5th Wheel 295RL from General RV in Ashland, VA and we have had nothing but problems. Both Grand Design headquarters and General RV have not been responsive and our RV has been out of service over 2 months this season. Have lost confidence in both companies. Will never do business with Grand Design and General RV!☹
