I'm quite a strong swimmer. I thought, I could tow the board and rig to the nearest shoal. I was wrong. Of course, 220 ltr is more than enough to paddle to the shore. I didn't want to crush my sail under my body. Of course, if in emergency I would've dump my rig and try to get to safety. Thanks!

@GenjiFox5 жыл бұрын
You should never try to help another sailor. If you are trying, you end up both exhausted. And danger your own life to safe another. Just check if hes ok. If not, go to the beach and search for a boat or call to lifegaurds.

I always take two lines of 1.5 meter long, one in harness , the other rolled in small size and tied to the back end of back footstrap (in that position it does not entangle during sailing) to tie broken parts togehter(boom, joint). The reason for taking two is, it sometimes, unhappily, boom breakage may occur in two places (one may follow after first breakage allmost simultaneously during trying not to fall in water instinctively). In the case above, broken parts can be connected with line easily because the grip portion is covered with sponge and in many cases it will bring you home without reversing the boomhead direction. Especially when you flip the sail and sail back to the direction where you came from.

Long time ago this clip. My Chinook ali boom broke like this last summer. The salt water ate through it. This happened close to shore, short swim back put a couple of screws in it and got back on the water 😂 About 30 mins later the other side side of the boom broke in the same place. I lashed some rope around the broken end of the boom and tied it off to the mast and sailed back. Least i got some extra time on the water 😊

me and friend both did this trick sailing in kihei maui, both broke boom arms in the same week, ( he did it twice,...rental gear) but luckily we did it on the way out on starboard tack and just flipped the rig and sailed back. The sail was pretty bagged out though, in 4.7 conditions.

beware rdm masts and booms with a shim, for example Aeron. The shim can easily pop out and will sink if you let go of it.

Flip boom, or double knot broken part to the mast boom portion, he had plenty of cord. sail holding on the mast with one hand. Anyway there were many options other than swimming. Swimming increases you chances of fatigue or hypothermia
@jacekzet566 жыл бұрын
Thank You for your input. When sailing with aluminium boom we should be aware that it can suddenly snap. It just happens. The place I was sailing is rather shallow. Water is clear and bottom is more or less visible. But you can not tell how deep it was. I was trying to reach a sandbank. Of course swimming is absolutely stupid. I'm quite a strong swimmer but towing your equpiment is sensless. To flip the boom you should disconnect uphauling line. To do this the mast should be disconnected first what is tricky in even the smallest waves. I suggest not to do it when the water is more rough. So your advice to try to fasten the broken front part to the mast is good.(but the tail of the tube is also bent- almost broken) But first thing one should try to do is sail clew first. And I also suggest to think it all over before we go sailing. It is good that so many people has seen this video (to my surprise)

"leaning against the other side of the sail" I don't think one can do it for a longer period of time (I was some 1 km from the shore) Sailing clew first-that was the way to go!

Flipping the boom worked out perfectly. In fact there were only this two options-towing was impossible , derigging and swimming even in this good conditions -very difficult. I don't understand what you want to achieve there? Swimmung home? Repairing it? Why dont you put the mast & sail on your board an paddle? Or sail with the remaining side of the boom?
@jacekzet566 жыл бұрын
I know from my previous experience that trying to tow the equipment is pointless .I was just trying to get to nearest sand bank where water depth is shallow enough to do all repairs in comfort.To sit on rolled sail and trying to paddle with the mast-I wasn,t that desperate then.
@elltielle6 жыл бұрын
Jacek Zysnarski okay, I didn't get that you were going for a sandbank, I thought you were just paddling around not knowing what to do. I always leave the sail on the mast and just lay it with mast and bo on the board, so it doesn't drag through the water. Works fine when paddeling
@gatesurfer6 жыл бұрын
Why was it necessary to take the mast off? It's extremely difficult to put back on in the water
@gatesurfer6 жыл бұрын
I see now. Your downhaul had to be taken off so you could flip the boom over. But you are right, sailing clew first would have been easier. Remember folks, you don't even have to be able to waterstart clew first. Just waterstart using the one good side, then jibe but don't flip the sail.
@jacekzet566 жыл бұрын
