When I played Black Mesa back in 2012, this chapter was one of the most memorable moments for me. Anyone who's played Half-Life knows that the HECU aren't really here to rescue, so I was itching to encounter them for the first time and fight them. From a fan perspective, I had listened to Joel's soundtrack two weeks before the mod came out; the topside batle was one of my most anticipated sequences because of his score alone. And it definitely delivered when I played through it - there is no exaggeration when I say that it is in one of my top gaming moments. From a gameplay perspective, everything comes together; the score, the level design, the art direction, and most importantly, the pacing. In this one chapter several things are communicated to the player: That they are close to the surface, and that the HECU are not their friends. The suspenseful elevator slowly moving to the top, the mortar pounding the warehouse, and Joel Nielsen's excellent score all indicate to players that they are in for a hell of a fight. However, the fight itself is not overly difficult; its main purpose is to inform the player that they are currently outmatched by the HECU and need to find cover via the Osprey and constant bombardments. This all melds together to create a spectacular setpiece that moves the story forward (the HECU are in control, and the surface is not safe). A tidbit I couldn't fit into the description: - The Definitive Edition adds an explosion sound as Freeman ascends the lift to the surface; however this was cut off in my save. I re-mixed it and added an incoming mortar sound as well (11:20), as well as another mortar impact sound at 11:49

11:54 this must really be the moment when the HECU felt panic, imagine being told that the main targets to silence are just some defenseless scientists that simply know too much for Black Mesa's good. But suddenly, some guy in a super high tech, indestructible suit, high enough on morphine to fight an angry horse and armed to the teeth comes running out of a hangar and begins blasting everyone in the squad

I love the Personality you give to Gordon. He's just a little bit paranoid, considering how much he reloads, but he's careful and makes sure to do what's right. This is how I believe Gordon would act in canon, and it's why I love rewatching this so much.
@Sexy_Nutella3 жыл бұрын
I'm glad :) Though the reloading was just a bad habit of mine that I curbed as this series went on. Come to think of it, the frantic reloading does work really well with this chapter given the overwhelming firepower of the HECU. I've always tried to show that Gordon is at his heart a scientist - he fights only to defend himself and does not go out of his way to kill his enemies unless he has to, which is why I always hold off on engaging new enemies until they attack.

It's called 'bms - mscl_ambience2.wav' in the game files. I recently replayed this game with the hud off, to see how differently stuff like this affects gameplay, I just really like to study stuff like that. This chapter was my favorite part of the whole thing for multiple reasons. I think not being able to see my health actually made me better at the game, because throughout most of the game I managed to stay above half health, checking with the health stations scattered about. I'd often find that I'd get hit and return to cover, underestimating how high my health really was. Adding on to that, I learned that music can also significantly affect gameplay, as during the climax of the chapter, on the surface, I felt more confident than usual. Thats a bit more obvious, but I just wanted to point it out. The biggest thing I had learned though, was on the office complex chapter. I felt like I had more of a connection to the scientists and guards throughout the game, possibly also due to not being able to see my health. I found myself saving a lot more humans than usual, and even discovered new ways to get more of them at once, heading back for the ones I had to leave behind. I felt a bit of sadness when they died, too. It really was like I had known them for a lifetime. This wasn't immersion, either. It was all just due to not being able to see my health. I know this is a pretty long comment for a 2 year old video, I just really wanted to share this.

Thanks! also I see you're using a mod for explosions, which mod is it?
@Sexy_Nutella4 жыл бұрын
It's called the Particle Enhancement Project on the Steam Workshop. It not only changes the explosion effect but also weapon fire and Tau particles as well.

Yep, it is implied that he used the Shotgun because the weapon wasn't in that room originally

From another user, It's called 'bms - mscl_ambience2.wav' in the game files. Not part of the official released OST but you can find it in the game's directory.
@Bizargh3 жыл бұрын
It is now also available in the just-updated "Black Mesa Terra" official soundtrack on Joel Nielsen's Bandcamp as 'Ambience 2'.

Nutella do you know any good steam workshop gun models for weapons? because most of them are glitchy and fake
@Sexy_Nutella3 жыл бұрын
I personally don't know much about that, I actually like the base game models for the most part. But I think there's a workshop mod that replaces them with the HL1 versions.

In some ways I agree, though the Marines hit me much more frequently when they're moving about haha
@vegalatt97742 жыл бұрын
@@Sexy_Nutella I'm glad that marines are still intimidating in Black Mesa. But the aliens are like quite nearly harmless. I remember it takes more than one hit with the crowbar to kill a headcrab, and also HEV batteries are much more rare. But after all Black mesa is an epic game.

Original BM weapon sounds are damn silly. Im just waiting for anyone to use Monikas beefy weapon sounds mod, but looks like no youtuber does want it or they are unaware... In the end - good video, i like anything related to BM ))
@Sexy_Nutella4 жыл бұрын
Eh, I personally find most of those weapon sounds didn't suit their weapons. I liked their MP5 and Glock sounds, but the Gluon and Tau sound a lot weaker than they are. I actually prefer the base weapon sounds haha. Thanks for the comment!
@mrtrigger17964 жыл бұрын
@@Sexy_Nutella Probably Monikas Tau sound is worse than original, true. But BM original shotgun sound... omg its probably the worst shotgun sound i ever heard in any game, its like slapping on a cheek :D Even HL1 shotgun sounds much more punchy.

This *looks* amazing, but I'm not loving the sound design. Adrenaline Horror is kind of a strange song, and just feels appropriate and very... Half-Life. The song they went with here in the final HECU battle is good, it sets the mood and tempo, but it feels generic by comparison.

Thanks for sharing, personally I do enjoy both the original score and what Joel Nielsen did here. I do think this score conveys a great sense of urgency that fits the setpiece
