Bromine is scary

Bromine is chemically very similar to chlorine, except chlorine is a gas and bromine is a liquid. It's one of the only elements that exists as a liquid at room temperature (the other is mercury), and it's also one of my favorite elements!
WARNING: Bromine is very toxic and corrosive, and is extremely dangerous if handled improperly.

Fun fact: the “smell” of pirates of the Caribbean ride water at the Disney parks is that distinct because they use bromine to treat the water instead of chlorine. The general population has less of a skin reaction to bromine than chlorine and thus less people affected worldwide. It also creates that distinctive smell you associate with their rides. Bromine is more expensive than chlorine so doing it small scale isn’t very cost effective. But the quantities Disney needs makes it a prudent investment

you know, magic is real, it's just that a few hundred years ago we realized we could do science and now we think of any magic as science because we understand it so well. magic is just a word for "reality being wack" from before we understood reality very well. but chemistry is 100% actually just potion making. we just understand it so incredibly well now that we can describe it mathematically and the mystical ways of thinking about it seem kind of unnecessary (they weren't ever very effective anyhow). but if you want to do the comparison for fun, it seems pretty reasonable to me to point out that yeah exotic weird elements like bromine absolutely count as demons, the fact that they don't have intelligence doesn't make them not demonic substances!

Ever hear of Tetraethylammonium bromide (TEAB) is a quaternary ammonium compound with the chemical formula C8H20N+Br−, often written as "Et4N+Br−" in the chemical literature. There is a process that takes it to a different organic compound.

A lot of us learned quite a bit in science class. What’s really sad as an adult isn’t that what I learned isn’t useful or that I was miseducated, but that other people argue with me when really basic stuff is involved because they didn’t learn anything. Like, no, Kyle, you can’t heat water up to 300 degrees no matter how hot your fire is. Only to get “you’re stupid, I’ve done it tons of times”. 🤦🏻‍♂️
