If you pause @1:30 on the left side it says to use “26.4% of methyl solution of antranilate, as manufactured by Bird-X”. So the Bird Stop or some other form bird repellent solution is literally what was used to create the Grapple. The 26.4% was no coincidence, as it is the solution that was used to create the product. Grapple was most likely founded by a farmer using bird repellent for its intended purpose on his/her crops of apples. Edit: Bird Stop is made by Bird-X, so it is the exact solution used to make it.

I really believe that the bird stop is where the grape apple originally came from. Probably someone had a farm with apple trees, used some bird stop to keep the birds away and maybe used a little too much. Then they noticed that the apples got a very slight hint of a grape smell in them and so they came up with the idea to use a diluted version of the bird stop directly onto the apples to create the grape apples. But for the patent they had to cover this as 26.4% methyl anthranilate solution, because you can't actually write in a science paper that you mix apples with bird stop.

For the following examples, the solution concen trations refer to and include percentages that approximate the actual concentration of methyl anthranilate active ingredient in the admixture. The method described in the patent isn't exactly how they were made. When you looked closely at grapples, you could see tiny perforations in the skin with even spacing over the entire apple - there was clearly some additional injection or just perforation to better absorb the flavor compound. And yes, they tasted like grape-y apples. I liked them.

@SianaGearz8 ай бұрын
According to some sleuths it might be another very similar product, called Bird Shield. But by all reason they might be equivalent. I think 26.4% might well be due to fundamental properties of this grape flavour chemical, such as its solubility in... Bird-X Bird Stop doesn't specify, Bird Shield specifies as "inert ingredients". Inert. So it's not alcohol. Water, should be water? It is water soluble. The MSDS of these two products disagree on the safety of the product. Bird Stop claims to be a Category 5 Acute Toxin, while Bird Shield says it's "generally recognised as safe" but irritating to skin and eyes. Table salt is Category 5 Acute Toxin, so make of that what you will, with estimated lethal toxicity several times higher. Just in case, i'm not convinced i would want to use Bird Stop, but i think they're likely doing the same exact thing as Bird Shield, they're just being overly cautious, or just uncertain of the purity of their raw ingredients. Maybe their water is an Acute Toxin. Hold your Wee for a Wii.

Bird Stop is safe to use around children, plants, and food crops, and is USDA-assisted. I guess it's because in high concentrations the flavour is incredibly bitter and may make you vomit. They also have some testimonials, one states, "I used 12 oz. to the gallon and applied with a garden sprayer. I am anxious to see how long it lasts. The odor is not objectionable……unless you dislike the smell of grape Kool Aid. - Doc from Alabama" I wonder if anyone else ended up with grapples or grapcorn or graparrots after using this...

I had seen an old VICE investigation, where they found out grapples were just Fuji apples and honey crisps sprayed in bird stop. Apparently all you had to do was drive next to the orchards and the strong smell of artificial grape was pungently in the air. The thin skin of Fuji and honey crisp apples let the flavoring absorb easier.

For whatever reason, the mystery of the missing Grapple really got to me. Turns out, Grapple Fruits' sole source for the Grapples was C&O Nursery in Wenatchee, WA. Likely, Grapple Fruits was a subsidiary brand of the business, but haven't been able to confirm. In September/August of 2023, the Nursery's owner shut the nursery down, and Grapple production ceased with the nursery closing. The Inventor listed in the patent, Gary A. Snyder, is part of the family that ran C&O. The CEO at the time of their closing was a Todd Snyder, and I found that the nursery management had passed through 4 generations of Snyder's. Gary was Secretary.

@Faunarr8 ай бұрын
@@bibasik7 the soda may have a lower concentration of it than diluted grape stop would. Potentially meaning that it doesn't have a high enough of a concentration to make a difference. As well as the fact that if that is the case then if it diffuses into the apple it will only have a part of the percentage of concentration as the soda hence possibly making zero difference. It may also be that such a low concentration would struggle to penetrate the skin causing this to either not work or take a much longer time to work than simply dipping it in diluted grapestop

Bird Stop's product page on their website claims it has _"No harmful chemicals"_ and is _"Safe for use around children, plants, and food crops"_ and that it works because _"methylanthranilate (bitter, smelly derivative of concord grapes) has a taste and smell that birds avoid - irritates their trigeminal systems"_ What this tells me is that *drinking Bird Stop* is going to be a painful, but probably non-lethal experience. However *methyl anthranilate* is safe to consume. Not only did Nile use it to make his grape soda previously, it's used in grape Kool-Aid, sodas, and candy.

The next time I was in the produce section at the grocery store, I looked for these things and about fell over when I saw the price, it was $6-7 for just three of these apples, and that was in 2011 dollars. You could buy a whole bag of like 10-12 fuji apples for that price. I never heard about any recalls for health effects of those apples, they just didn't sell well and faded from existence. @@kingatrzeciak8442 The topic is quite frankly too broad to elaborate. It could involve everything from the toxins in stinging plants to manufacturing various plant hormones (which can be applied to create all sorts of freaky results, gibberellic acid is a common one and even used commercially) to extracting various flavor compounds from fruit (juicy fruit gum has a compound found in jackfruit, though its made artificially) to just straight up using phytochemicals in various reactions. I just suggested plant chemistry in general cause it could be a whole new world of chemistry worth exploring on KZbin!

8:04 "DO NOT EAT (or you will die)" probably accurate tbh Considering that the bird stop bottle said "If swallowed call a poison control centre"
@vhaelen3268 ай бұрын
it also said "give the person a glass of water" so that warning label is probably just there for liability reasons, ive made the same answer a couple of times: the fact that its bird STOP rather then bird POISON makes me think its safe, a solution that smells and tastes fruity but with a potent burning sensation will deterr birds and over a couple of generations the birds will avoid those trees instinctively, if it was actual poison you wouldnt want it to taste/smell like anything except fruit and it wouldnt solve the problem, if you kill the birds that eat your fruit birds wont give a shit and keep eating the fruit because no bird survives to "tell" about the experience, if you make something harmless but very painfull it will give that information to the next generation

Tons of non toxic products have this on the label. It isn't to warn anyone, it is to avoid lawsuits.

Dosage makes the poison. Could be toxic if you drank directly from the jug, but spraying some on an apple and cleaning it off later leaves less than 1% of that kind of dose.

@@Sotanaht01 "Dosage makes the poison" Yep, loads of things that we consume daily that is "poison" (if enough is consumed). :p Water poisoning is a thing for example, too much water in a short time span can lead to very severe issues, including death~
@smoochie15948 ай бұрын
@justkats9371 the term water poisoning is a misnomer. It's more like over saturation. The deadly part is that it over saturates your electrolytes and causes stuff to shut down. It's not like the fluid itself is doing damage, it's the amount of the fluid that is doing the damage. Unlike Alcohol poisoning, where the fluid is actually doing damage.

According to the 2019 SDS for Bird-Stop, the other ingredients are glycerol and a castor oil ethoxylate emulsifier and water. They were enough of a non-concern to be left of previous SDSs. I think he'll be fine, however he should look this stuff up and show the audience so we don't worry about it.

@fellow80855 ай бұрын
apples express extreme heterozygosity, they have more than twice the number of genes as a person. This means that every seed of an apple produces a tree, that will produce fruit nothing like its parent. The three points are the sugars, the tannins, and the acids. mostly sugar is an eating apple, mostly acid is a baking apple, mostly tannins is a cider apple. Every individual tree is a new apple variety. When you see orchards of macintosh trees, theyre all grafted clones of the one original macintosh tree grown from seed, which died in 1910.
