How about pump the inner tube a bit, maybe that makes it easyer to install. Another trick is to put some talc powder on the inner tube. Might help a bit. However, I agree that the Schwalbe inner tyre is pretty good!

Great videos, thanks for all your efforts, and thanks too for the recent AV4 delivery to me in Sussex. One point about matching the tyre writing and the valve.... doesn’t this over balance one side of the wheel, and wouldn’t it be better to balance the valve with the tyre writing opposite 🤣
@rockape19544 жыл бұрын
Work from opposite the valve and push the valve in to move the tube away from the rim as the last bit of the tyre/rim is fitted. Put a cap on or nut to make sure you don't let the valve stem disappear up inside the tyre. Having a partially inflated tube helps. By working opposite the valve the tyre can sit in the deep well of the rim... This is the method I use for motorbikes and my 26" tyres.
@effyleven4 жыл бұрын
Helpful tip, that might have not been immediately apparent to a first-timer. Thank you, Phil.
@richardharker27754 жыл бұрын
I agree with starting opposite the valve too. Plus just enough air in the tube for installation so it keeps a shape until the tyre is fitted. Some may dissagree with me but I prefer a tighter fitting tyre since it will fit more securely and with better concentricity on the rim.

Some feedback on Continental tyres. I put two on about a month ago. Pros Easy to put on Roll well Light Cons Tyres are made of v soft rubber. So little puncture resistance Side walls are thin so catch the wall, and they will blow out. Tread is limited so probably ok for summer but where it might be sl slippery in winter Schwalbe would be better. Would I get them again- no. They’re too fragile for where I go but would be ok if you stay on clean tarmac only

@singlecask4 жыл бұрын
effyleven I honestly don’t know. Must have been a weekness caused by the welding, it‘s a clean break almost directly behind a welding spot. Maybe my 85 kg and the daily commute on the streets of Berlin are too much stress for the poor Brompton. I bought it in November 2017 and accumulated maybe 10k kilometers. Waiting for the repair sucks, the shop where I bought it is pretty slow.

Many thanks for the question. Funny you should ask…. We considered using them, then read some reviews that they don’t ride very well (a bit slippery and hard), and are a nightmare to fit (and damage the rims). We bought a pair, then decided the reviews were correct and gave them to a customer, who has so far not managed to fit them. So I’m not going to recommend them, well not at the moment!

A very informative video! Is it on the cards to do a rolling-down-hill test to compare the relative rolling resistances of the tyre options and how this converts to terminal speed? Whilst doing this, an additional wind resistance test of a Brompton Borough Roll Top Bag would be fun too! I have been piling on the miles with standard Marathon Racer tyres and as long as the rear is on 95-100 psi I am happy with rolling resistance so far, although do notice that going from coarse tarmac to ultra smooth is a bit like having a little push from a following wind - presumably that is the tread pattern gripping too much on the coarse stuff. I know looks can matter quite a bit when admiring the bike, particularly if it does not have mudguards, but to be honest, when I am riding, I cannot see the tyres 😂. But does anyone else have an interest like me in how a tyre sounds? Tread/pattern makes quite a difference and on a quiet country road, the noise a tyre makes in the wet or dry can be quite satisfying too. Ah, there we go, another video idea - a noise test!

At 0:47 you mentioned the SM+ are not recommended by Brompton. What would be the rationale behind this?
@brilliantbikes4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching and paying attention Brompton say that the very firm sidewall can affect the ride (making it harder / firmer) and can interfere with the golf (but we haven’t had this) Early versions of the M+ suffered as the sidewalk was so hard that you couldn’t notice when the tyre was slightly flat - which. Oils lead to you riding a flat tyre and damaging it

Lol It comes from the tongue in cheek rules of cycling Rule 40 Tires are to be mounted with the label centered over the valve stem.Pro mechanics do it because it makes it easier to find the valve. You do this because that’s the way pro mechanics do it. This will save you precious seconds while your fat ass sits on the roadside fumbling with your CO2 after a flat. It also looks better for photo opportunities. Note: This obviously only applies to clinchers as tubulars don’t give you a choice.
@Robutube14 жыл бұрын
@@brilliantbikes Thanks for the reply - makes sense. Ian T (below) aligns his valves with the pressure rating on the tyre which is smart - I think I'll start doing that. Go to go and Google "clinchers vs. tubulars" now 😊.

@davidburgess54194 жыл бұрын
I've just got the answer from your excellent website. The SM+ are 480gms whereas these are 275gms. IF the puncture resistance really is only fractionally less, it means that if you replace SM+ with these tyres, you will save 410gms. Impressive.

Interesting that you mention that this tyre is e-bike compatible. I see that Schwable have come out with a range of tyres specifically for e-bikes. Whilst this might seem like a cynical marketing ploy, increasing EU regulation, which the UK is likely to follow, means that to keep your bike "legal" you should only fit e-bike rated tyres on a Brompton electric. If you had a catastrophic accident, you really don't want to be explaining to a barrister why you preferred Kojaks on your BE :-)

@devjon1234 жыл бұрын
I've been following various discussions about fitting solid tyres onto a Brompton. I believe that Tannus make one. The majority opinion seems to be negative. The lovely people from Brilliant bikes mentioned putting "Slime" in the inner tube. I would heartily recommend the Marathon Plus tyres if your main concern is punctures. Perhaps in combination with a Schwalbe inner tube dosed with Slime? Sounds as though it might be the belt and braces way to go, but I'd drop an email to Brilliant Bikes and ask them.
