It's all about the hub, Bub. Good camera work Good story teller, and a vid that speaks to the kind of person who NEEDS the vid. Just good story telling. Great seat sock tip for every one. You can always learn something.Details: you are not glueing, you're vulcanizing the patch, you need to check the whole tire AND the spoke nipples for the cause. Safe spot for parts is an overlooked trick. Rim is deeper opposite the valve and helps with tight tires, so starting at valve stem not always good idea. Also brake often bind newly inflated tire and needs to be moved out of the way by cable or shoe

Whilst there is nothing AT ALL wrong with this well made video instructional... ...(I really mean that)... ...you can save a LOT of time by NOT removing the wheel for a simple puncture.
@EverydayCycling4 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right! I could have pointed that out in the video but really didn't remember. However, I feel like removing the whole wheel and reassembling it, even with the gear adjustment and all, only adds about 5 minutes or less to the whole process, now that I'm completely familiar with it. And removing the inner tube while the wheel is stuck in the frame, rotating it to look for the puncture and refitting the inner tube inside can be a pain, no? Do you usually do it that way?
@effyleven4 жыл бұрын
@@EverydayCycling In truth, I have had only two (2) rear wheel punctures in 3 years of Brompton biking... which I cannot complain of. For the first I took off the wheel using instruction manual to get 6 speed gears correctly adjusted afterwards. I did it that way so that I had some practice in rear wheel removal, and could approach it with confidence in future. For puncture number two I decided to try leaving wheel on, to similarly build confidence in performing the alternative technique. It was a lot quicker.. and done right there by the roadside. I got lucky, though, and found the hole in the tube without any trouble.

Hi Victor, thanks so much for posting. I purchased a spare inner tube the other day and the lady in the shop said it will probably be the rear one that has a puncture as that is the hardest to fix. Your video has reassured me that I’ll know what to do if that moment ever comes. All your videos have been so informative. I have had my Brompton for just 4 weeks at the time of writing and I’m absolutely loving it.

Hi. Great video very clear, one tip you may want to consider is pumping up the tyre just after you have put the wheel in the frame, just to make sure everything is ok and you don't have a leak. I have learnt this the hard way on my motorcycle.

Those Park Tools quick patches are fine when you're out on the road and will last for a while, but if you get another puncture or deflate the tyre they tend to buckle, crease and debond. After a while they get quite crispy. A better solution is to carry a spare innertube, change that on the road and then repair the punctured tube at home with a proper rubber bike patch with rubber glue. I tend to only use the quick patches if I am unlucky enough to get two punctures on one ride. Taking off the Brompton rear wheel is definitely more of a chore than a quick release road bike wheel, but I guess you can always fold it away and take public transport if you can't be bothered to fix it on the road. :)

I also just put the new (or previously patched) tube in and repair the leaky one later. Actually I keep several tubes and do batch repairs when I do them at home. But I do carry a real rubber glue patch kit on the road. Don't forget to check the location of the leak so you can be sure nothing is in the tire to cause a new puncture at the same location as the first one. Don't ask why I remind you of this but don't forget! Way back when many auto tires had tubes a tire mechanic taught me the trick of applying the glue to the tube and instead of waiting for it to dry, just light it with a match or lighter, blow it out, light it again until it won't light. Glue is dry and you don't have to guess. Be careful not to let it burn long enough to damage the tube, though. A few seconds at a time is all it takes, usually only two or three burns.

Thank you so much for this video. I was cycling yesterday and in the middle of nowhere (these places still exist in the Netherlands) I got a flat tire. It deflated very slowly. I had nothing with me. The next village was at least 3 km further away and it was very hot in the full sun. I was sitting on the side of the road and luckily a good samaritan stopped and helped me inflate the tire to the maximum with the small pump so that I could just reach the next village on my bike and get on the bus with my folded Brompton. Now I am thinking very hard about what I need to have with me to be able to fix this myself, if it ever happens again and especially how I should do this. I'll make sure I always have this video with me from now on in case I get a flat tire again. It's perfect for learning what needs to be done. So thanks again.

Really good video! My dad taught me a really cool trick for looking for punctures when you’re on the road and don’t have access to water. Instead of feeling for air escaping with your hands, use your nose! Your nose is much more sensitive to the feel of escaping air, so just run the inner tube around under your nostrils just to be sure and you may find additional punctures you never knew you had (although hopefully not)! - may your Schwalbes always be puncture proof

I review this whenever I need to remove rear wheel. I had to recently when the bungee cord on my rack snapped and got wrapped around my sprocket. The gear setting / adjustment was easier than I thought. The only problem was removing all the "stuff" because of flipping it over to provide a stable platform. This included a "ring-a-ding" bell on the top of handle bar and making sure not to damage my bar end mirror and then there was the issue of removing my kick stand assembly that was affixed to the rear axle...it all had to come undone prior to removing the cord. Your instructions really helped...Thank you!

Recent Brompton owner, and very longstanding road biker used to changing tubes on 700c tires. I can usually swap out a tube on front or rear tires on those bikes in just a few minutes with a tire lever and nothing else. This is a bit daunting looking and I obviously need to practice a few times at home before I'll feel confident doing this on the road. I guess I also need to stop procrastinating and buy that Brompton toolkit. Thanks for this very helpful video. BTW, I've worked in a bike shop and, while I do occasionally use a lever to put a tire back on the rim, I've been told lots of time not to do that due to danger of pinching the tube and creating another leak.

Good video - to add a tip about finding the cause of the puncture in the tyre: - Mark the tube as suggested AND always fit the tyre with the sidewall logo (e.g the blue Schwalbe badge on your tyre) lined up with the valve as a constant index point - thus if you take the tyre off completely (which you may have to do to find a shard of glass or metal) you haven't lost the index point. Applies to any bike tyre (and it looks better too!!) My own Brompton has tubes with Presta valves as they work a lot better with the pressure required (needs a ferrule in the wheel-rim hole)

Excellent tips. I'm in the market for Brompton so have just binged your whole channel. All my current bikes have quick release so this would be a fun extra faff. I've never done it myself (on account of the quick release) but I'm fairly sure you can mend a puncture without taking the tube out... Take 1 bead off while the wheel is still on and slide the inner tube out enough to work on the puncture, then tuck back in. I also swear by slime inner tubes and haven't had to mend a tube by the road for years. Love your can do and positive outlook to sustainable travel. Keep up the good work!
