UPDATE: PLEASE PUT THE CHAINRING BOLT SPACERS ON THE OUTSIDE. IN THE VIDEO I INSTALLED THEM ON THE INSIDE. IT WILL INTERFERE WITH THE CHAIN. ALSO THE SPACER IS NEEDED OR ELSE THE CHAIN WILL HIT THE FRAME. PLEASE INSTALL IT.
This chainring is perfect for those that need to tackle the occasional steep hill.
In this video I will be installing the H&H BCD130 54/33T Unibody CNC Duo Chainring and the Ti Parts Workshop Titanium Bottom Bracket with Japanese Bearings.
The bottom bracket is much smoother and those that ride for a long time will appreciate it.

In 2019, during high Covid19 closure, I bought my only, but by then the former top, flame painted SuperlightM6LXBrompton! In Scandinavia it seems that all are with the long seat post as standard (we are generally tall people)! At first "free Service" I got my crank changed to a proper size, Chinese ceramic crank (It seems that Brompton has changed the width many times, as also the brakes? When I changed parts to titanium I had problems to find the right length for the titanium fastening bolts). I have found parts to make it lighter for now 9,35 kilo, but expect to come below 9 kilo, and still with mudguards!! The stays are from titanium but the clamps holding the stays and mudguards are from "Heavy Metal" too be changed to carbon and alu! I have gone up a steep serpentine road, and even the low gears wasn't enough, so I had to walk! But it was special enough to make me, not add a low option gear, as I find it a waste of money! Finn. This is awesome! Thank you so much for showing this. I just started doing my research to do something similar and yet I wasn't thinking to go for such a drastic difference in chainring. I'm going to have to brush up on gear range now. My Brompton came with the 12% gear reduction and I really wanted the standard gear ring when I test road bikes because I like that Top Gear... But this low gear is Featherlite and lovely to go up hills after my legs are tired from a ride and I'm thinking I might regret giving that up entirely? I'm not sure how much that 12% is going to affect the lower gear

I was wondering how common the Schlumpf Drive actually is. I recently bought a used Brompton 3-Speed from 2005 with a Schlumpf High Speed Drive as well as an E-Bike Conversion (ca. 8600km/5400miles on it). I would be curious to know if anyone was using the regular Speed Drive.🤔 The High Speed Version has some drawbacks, besides the price. The 27-thooth Chainring brings the chain very close to the Frame and the „gearbox“ actually touches the rear Triangle when folded. The heel shifting is pretty ingenious though.

@@BromptonFamilyTime Gotcha. I'd use the front derailleur that is paired with that shifter but it looks too small, not enough capacity to support the 21-tooth difference of that duo chainring. While I was googling around for this, I also found a Litepro BCD130 53t-39t dual chainring that might work because of that 14-tooth difference, although the smaller ring might not be small enough. I guess I'd have to get my hands on one first so I can play with it.

@BromptonFamilyTime
@BromptonFamilyTime 2 жыл бұрын
You don't need to change the Bottom Bracket but the chain ring comes with a bottom bracket spacer so might need to put it onto the bottom bracket if the chain line is not centered. The chain will come close to the frame when riding the 33T so you may need to use the space to push the chain line out. You could also adjust this by using spacers on the rear cog (depending on the gears you have).

It has, been a while since you made this video and you have had time to see what you like and don't like about this install. I am thinking about this 54t/33t chainring install for a S6L, replacing the 50t that came with the bike. Before I saw this I thought about installing a 39t chainring. Have you any experience with a 39t or 40t chainring? Which do you think you would prefer? Would you consider a 3x3 setup?

This chainring is actually pretty nice to have. I haven't had a hill that I could not conquer. If yo don't need to use it everyday then it works great. If you need the lower gears often then you will be better getting a smaller chainring until your within the range you desire (but top speed will be less). The lowest chainring I have used was a 48T and it was okay for slow riding.

07:07 If you buy torque wrenches eg Park Tool TW-1.2, 5.2, & 6.2 and a Park Tool SBS-1.3 metric socket set (other brands are available) you’ll never ruin another bolt and/or thread by applying too much force. Contact the manufacturers of the parts if their documentation doesn’t state the required Nm (Newton metres) of torque to correctly install their products. To loosen the chain tension simply push the rear derailleur upward toward the chain stay, then lift the chain off the second jockey wheel and slowly release the spring tension in the derailleur (or it will fly back with a jolt). I noticed earlier you were ‘blaming’ the workstand for the bike moving, simply tighten the clamp. 08:07. Their video shows you can keep your hands clean by using your right foot to push down on the lower section of the chain to go from the 33T ring to the 54T, I’d prefer a front derailleur with appropriate lever and cable, but most are limited to a 16T range, though if H&H made a 44T / 20T combo for my 6-spd I might be interested.
@BromptonFamilyTime
@BromptonFamilyTime 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the info! I have a torque wrench. It was one of those purchases that I am glad I made and wished I made sooner. The workstand clamp moves no matter how tight I make it. I will upgrade to a better stand in the future. The foot method works okay. I haven't had the chance to use it much since I don't have hills where I live.
@NoZenith
@NoZenith Жыл бұрын
I'm curious what you mean by pushing down on a lower part of the chain. I can't see how that would shift backup to the larger chain ring? OH do you mean by peddling backwards with the left and pushing down with the right at the same time to get it to jump back up?
@platypushatstand
@platypushatstand Жыл бұрын
@@NoZenith Pushing down with the right foot causes the chain, in conjunction with the Brompton derailleur, to create resistance (the derailleur has a hidden spring creating tension between the 2 ‘arms’), this allows the chain to appear to ‘stretch’ (when in reality it goes slack due to lack of tension). This momentarily releases the tension keeping the chain on the chainrings, allowing your right foot to push down and move the chain to the right allowing it to pick up the teeth of the larger chainring. Then when you pedal forward again the tension of the chain on the teeth of the chainring will pull the rest of the chain onto the rest of the chainring under tension and voila! Probably takes some practice though.
@NoZenith
@NoZenith Жыл бұрын
@Platypus Hatstand I think I can picture it. That would be neat and a lot less faff and expense than getting a front derailier or a schlumph drive
@platypushatstand
@platypushatstand Жыл бұрын
@@NoZenith Absolutely. Most front derailleurs can handle a max teeth jump of 16, hence 16T. Schlumpf is simplistic in operation, but adds about 800gms in weight at the cost of about £900 (GBP), additionally you would need to have the drive-side of the bottom bracket ‘faced’ to accept the specialist Schlumpf unit. The other option to using your foot, is to stop and use a small stick or your finger to hook the chain from one ring to the other.
