Good on you for documenting the trip and showing the real on road experience. It must have been hard with all going on to grab out the camera and also make a film. Don’t sweat this changes, your original plan was a huge tour, even with light gear and not taking Beans it would be massive. Having the ability to change plans on the road and use other forms of transport is part of the reason I like folding bike touring. I think you’ve levelled up & added another dimension to the trip and will probably enjoy it a whole lot more. All the best!!

Hey Brian, Maybe think of it this way, the whole ethos of the brompton is to be able to use major transportation ie trains buses planes to go somewhere between and have the brompton to cruise around with That's exactly the strategy you are now using taking major transportation to get to the actual area you wanted to see then cruising around that area. You are using the true brompton process, now just slow down and enjoy it..

I have a single wheel bike trailer and I use it to carry my cats in on bike rides. The cats really enjoyed the bike ride and I enjoyed have them come along for the ride and their company.

Much as it would have been lovely to have Beans on the tour, her welfare comes first. So does yours, so this was the right call. Safety first! Keep well, and onward to Wyoming.

You know they say that we pack our fears. I’m so glad you’re giving yourself permission to ask your brother for help and to adjust your plans based on what you’re learning about the reality of riding with that rig, plus Beans, in that hilly terrain. I look forward to watching you shift into a mode more conducive to enjoying the journey. No need to break the land speed record on this trip. Be safe.

Well done you. You have tried to organise everything and to include Beans but as you say the reality is distressing her. Those roads are crazy!! Also with the best will in the world how would you know how heavy the rig is and how bad the hills are until you are actually doing it. A great plan B and I look forward to following your adventures. I am sure Beans will be happy on her holiday too :-) How lovely that your bro will help you out.

At least you found out touring and camping isn't for Beans without any serious consequences. I was so worried she would run away and you would lose her. We all make mistakes and learn from them. I've learnt from these past two vlogs of yours, if I'm ever tempted to take my current two cats away with me I'll just come back and rewatch these. As I have said before, I think with cats I think it's down to individual character and getting them used to activities as a kitten. In the past I've had one that loved car riding and another that liked bike rides, but not my current two. 🚲🐈

Brian please Don’t call yourself names. You are learning from your mistakes. It’s admirable that you are giving this adventure a try and that you are making necessary adjustments as you go. I think you made the right decision about Beans. Poor girl wasn’t enjoying the bike ride. It was all too new for her. Once you have lightened the load you will enjoy this trip much better. Next time take your Bike Friday. It can handle 4 panniers with no problems.

As a teacher I often ask my students "What did you learn from our class today?' My learning from following you on this trip is that the cat, as much as you love her, doesn't belong on this trip. She would have done better back home with someone caring for her and you'd be able to really enjoy this adventure 100% more. Perhaps the whole trailer, then, would not have been necessary. Great lesson to learn for the future.

When you originally announced your trip, I thought that you were going to take some kind of motorized transport to get to Yellowstone and I never thought you were going to take your cat. Yellowstone is much more interesting to see than the area you have been passing through and I’m sure your time will be better spent riding around Yellowstone there than getting there. I wish I could do something similar to what you are doing, but on a much smaller scale in the Eastern Sierra area of California. Unfortunately, for the first part of the trip, I’d need to have one of those anti-bear canisters to store food in for the first part of the trip. I have a Downtube 8H folding bike. It’s kind of heavy at 35 lb., but I like the internal Alfine hub and the fact that it’s a belt drive.

Weight is the enemy of cycling, but especially cycling uphill in a desert in late summer on a 16" city bike 😆. Beans might have been slightly better up front - cats rely heavily on facial interaction with humans. On the back all she can really see is semis coming her way, which she instinctively wants run from. To be fair though, she's never going to be a Nala from 1bike1world - she was more or less doing that from 6 weeks old. That cat goes on kayaks FFS!! 🤯 For bike touring, it's easy to forget youre still propelling the thing and overload - trick I learned is to pack as if you're hiking (I.e. carrying it on your back all day). If it's gonna be hell to carry that weight all day, cycling all day with it won't be much better.
@jeffdible81712 жыл бұрын
Relentless climbing and extra weight either on two wheels or on your back is brutal. No shame it admitting you need to adjust. Enjoy the rest of your trip. I look forward to your VLOG.

No, you can't find free camping anywhere, except in US Forest Service and BLM land. That's usually pretty remote and out of range of bicycles. With all the stuff (and cat) you were bringing, I'm surprised you got as far as you did.

"No camping" so long as I don't set up a tent, I ain't camping--everything else is good to go when you put everything away after use. I've slept under picnic tables with a pad and layers of clothing; and on stormy nights; in the less visited "rest stops," I've used dark tarp/large sliced open garbage bag laid over the picnic table and used it as shelter while sleeping under it. Thank you for thinking about Beans; no innocent creature should suffer from any human actions--I feel better, and can continue to watch your self-torturing vds, you've created for YOURself--BUT, Brain (sic), what don't kill-ya will make you smarter, provided your not borne an idiot, which you were not--I trust you will learn and improve from your experience. I've learned from your tortured vd, watching your mistakes: On my interstate travel, I will to do more reconnaissance planning and look at other interstate bikers' channels for tips before I head out. Your poor planning and misery helped me--no ills intended--just raw truth. Thank you for your mistakes so they don't become mine. Keep going.

As someone who has had cats for a long time, that was very foolish taking beans on that trip. Lovely idea, but cats are generally highly strung. It is a very rare cat that would be laid back enough for a trip round the block let alone hundreds of miles. She couldnt even see you to keep her calm. Very very unwise idea. I also wonder why you did such a mega trip on a brompton?! I really hope she recovered from that stress. Sorry to be so negative, and i think you agree that in hindsight it was just cruel.
