The Electronic Cafe mini series celebrating albums all turning 40 years old this year continues with BRONSKI BEAT - THE AGE OF CONSENT, the 40th Anniversary of this 1980's synthpop classic . . . . an important and influential record.
Bronski Beat were a British synth-pop band formed in 1983 in London, England. The initial lineup, which recorded the majority of their hits, consisted of Jimmy Somerville (vocals), Steve Bronski (keyboards, percussion) and Larry Steinbachek (keyboards, percussion). Simon Davolls contributed backing vocals to many songs.
Bronski Beat achieved success in the mid-1980s, particularly with the 1984 single "Smalltown Boy", from their debut album, The Age of Consent. "Smalltown Boy" was their only US Billboard Hot 100 single. All members of the band were openly gay and their songs reflected this, often containing political commentary on gay issues.

This is a really interesting one. I really liked the singles off this, but they were one of those bands I kind of liked around that time, but not enough to buy their records (similarly for me Japan, Spandau, Simple Minds). Just so much great music around, and having a limited budget, remember having to be brutally selective.

Ignore the age of consent at your peril’ London records 1984. Best non single tracks; Screaming, Junk and Love and Money. Mike Thorne’s production can’t be overstated. As a gay nineteen year old in 1984 this record had a profound impact on me. I saw Bronski Beat on their autumn 1984 tour at the Powerhouse in Birmingham. Then straight afterwards I went round the corner to The Nightingale and saw Sylvester doing a PA for his then single Rock The Box xx
