So, I've tried making some stuff with bots before, and from my observations they essentially all use the same algorythms for pathfinding (that's why you can see frontline Zen or Ana), regrouping, ult usage and aim (not completely sure about aim, but looks like it from most killcams). They will always use offensive ults if there are at least 4 people in the area. They will always run it down all the way to point if there is even a single person on their team alive and outside spawn when they cross the sapwn border (doesn't matter if the person dies on the next frame). The only difference between them is for triggers related to specific ability usage, and even then, there are only like 5 different scripts, I think. Oh and every decision is literally made with a single condition as the trigger (for instance, with Hog: if enemy in LoS then hook. It doesn't care about whether the enemy is even remotely killable or even if there is a barrier in the way) 19:48 Oh yeah, and that happens too. No idea how Blizzard messed that up, but sometimes bots just refuse to play, it's like Overwatch is in such a bad state even the game itself doesn't want to play

Tbh, that "?" bug started to exist for the bots, when they added the ability to adjust team sizes for custom games. Since then, that bug has stayed and not been fixed (about more than a year now sadly).

The thing about AI is: when one of them dies and respawns while someone is still on point, they will always leave spawn. When they all die together, they wait together in spawn until everyone respawns. However, this is how you get the issue where if one bot dies and respawns, they walk back to point but while the rest of the team is killed, they still go to point, since they're no longer in spawn. And because they're on point when the rest respawns, they go while the first one dies and it's just an endless loop over and over.

@@LadyVineXIII I managed to escape to silver as well last week, but then I decided I need to learn more heroes and dropped back down to bronze :') feels good tho, I went from an absolute moira onetrick to having a blast playing ana actually having to aim shots, it's amazing. maybe at some point I'll even develop enough of a game sense to be able to tell which hero is good when, I still just pick entirely based on what I feel like playing at the moment

The problem is not the bots themselves individually, but rather their utter lack of ability to combo and synergize. The best they can do is play grouped, but they're not able to match abilities or focus fire whenever an advantage presents itself (like when the Hog hooks someone). Similarly, you never see the Mei attempt to wall someone off, hinting that there is no deeper complexity in their AI coding. So while they might beat someone 1v1 even on a pro level, they'd still lose because ultimately the game is based on teamwork far more than individual strength. I think that what could work, was if the bots were not split into individual AIs per character, but rather a single AI controlling all of them (like an rts style AI). This way the AI could maintain a collective tactical approach with some sort of comp-based synergy, so a Lucio actually works as a Rein booster, instead of just being a random bot that happens to exist in vicinity of a Rein bot, but without actually talking together about their collective goal. They also need to not gravitate to the point as bad as they do rn, but that might also just be down to the AI being assigned to individual bots rather than as a whole team of synergized bots.

@@Real_MisterSir There’s also the issue that Workshop is severely handicapped in terms of allowing AI to make intelligent decisions. For example, by default, there’s no direct way to know where any deployable entity is, including DVa bomb, Junkrat trap, Torbjorn and Symmetra turrets, and Baptiste’s immortality field. We can make educated guesses about where it is, but we can never know for sure. There are also pretty strict limits on how much compute power a given Workshop instance can consume before it is forcibly closed by what is sometimes referred to as the Eye of Sauron. On top of that, there are also limits to how much data any given Workshop instance can contain, which limits how complex systems can truly be.

Underappreciated moment is when Flats points out how 'real' that last round was, with the Bastion 'dc' and with the rest of the bot-team just giving up. Underappreciated because Flats himself adds another layer of realism: ragequit Bastion gets dropped, and then the matchmaker (Flats in this case) dumps a completely new player (or bot) into a team that has already given up. Poor 'Bastion 2' getting the classic OW experience of joining queue, waiting in queue for a bit, and then getting dropped into a team that has already fallen apart, and only got to play for 10 seconds before Athena tells him 'DEFEAT!'

If Blizzard gave each hero pathing that suited the playstyle of the hero (no more leading the charge, Ana!), and gave bots the ability to change heroes based on the composition the players are running, it could be a great way to push bronzes to get better.

the hanzo isn't sus in my opinion. i play a lot of AI because i find the rote of it to be relaxing especially in a low-stakes environment, and i've played comp about one time. however, i got potg yesterday in AI with 5 headshots as hanzo despite the fact that i'd likely rank as bronze/silver if i played comp. once you play AI enough, you begin to intrinsically understand the behavior of the bots which makes your plays look far more "skilled" until you actually have to play against humans.

So, I ran a couple of custom games the other day with mostly bots because I was trying to do some testing on respawn mechanics, and I think the hard AIs actually clump together far more than the easy ones. I used easy bots at first because I was turning all of the damage down except for my hero, so I could control how many enemies were on the point, but the easy AIs were wandering all over the place. The hard AIs just beelined for the point in a tight clump. Edited to add: I get why they didn’t make a Rein bot. Programming AI for heroes with regular guns seems a lot easier. But I feel like they could have made an Orisa bot so that there was one barrier tank option amongst the AIs at least. Like Hog and Zarya, she has range and no movement abilities. Programming it to actually use the shield in a reasonable fashion would probably be difficult, but the fact that it’s a cooldown seems like it would make it easier than trying to program the AI to manage a regenerating shield like Rein or Sig. And, they have a Sombra bot who just throws her TL anywhere, fairly uselessly. Having Orisa throw the shield when she has it and someone near her is taking damage would be better than nothing. Edited again: I just remembered that they _do_ have an Orisa AI in the Uprising missions. I wonder why they never included it with the play-vs-AI bots

Blizzard release the OW2 updated bots Challenge. There's no way Blizz didn't have to do a ton of work to get PvE bots to work well. There's got to be updated bots to train against. Even if it doesn't exist yet they've already had to create a lot of the back-end tools to make smarter bots. Hey Blizz, here's an idea for OW2: Create bots in tiered levels that match elos and give the bots the mechanics of players at that level so the bots get better as the community gets better. There's no reason they can't make a GM bot team, a bronze team, everything in between.

I had high hopes for this but the Bronzes consistently smoked them. I will say that it's always entertaining to do a 12 bot bastions game. They do make some progress and you never know what's going to happen next. (I tried it on Route 66 once and the defender bastions found a spot where they could stall the cart on 3rd point and so the game just reached a stalemate. The attacker bots couldn't find the defender that was stalling, so all 12 players just sat there looking confused until I killed the game.)
