Another fascinating video about pins and backs this time. I ditto my comment from the hinge video. I didn't realize that they could be so varied and INTERESTING. You explain the purpose and the components of these things so well Nancy. Another aspect of your teaching is very powerful in its capability of making the knowledge STICK, so as to be available in recall at a later date. Blimey, that was delving on philosophical. Thanks and Love from Zina and Me.

Thanks for sharing, Nancy! You're my favorite jeweler to watch, easily - what a great combo of personality and technical knowledge. I haven't yet made any "functional" parts for my jewelry, can't wait to give these ideas a spin!

This video just saved my bacon on a tricky brooch I couldn't figure out how to clasp cleanly. Somehow, I'd never figured out that the pin doesn't need to extend beyond the catch! And since the only way I could make the clasp work on my current project was to have the pin oriented upward, I was really not happy about the stabby-stabby hazard.

Hello I have got 2 queries. If I want to use stainless steel wire to create a pin back for a brooch, what gauge would you advise me to use? Can I hammer stainless steel wire? Thanks a lot for your help.

Ms. Nancy, my next project is a large-ish copper barrette for a friend. I was just going to do a wooden pin through the holes but looking at this I'm wondering about doing a larger version of the pin-back (not sharpened) as a barrette fastener. Any thoughts on this?

Hello! I want to make a finger brooch and I don't know what pin to attach so that the finger won't roll down and stay put. I ve tried a spring but it's not right. Can you please advise me? Thanks!

Hey Nancy, Do you order your stainless wire, or do you buy it at a local hardware store? Also, is there a test to tell of a spool of wire is stainless steel? I am a collector of old woodworking tools and I tend to pick up lots of odds and ends and I have several large spools of wire and would like to know what they are!! Love your video's Thanks for taking the time to create them. Virginia

+ozmommi I purchase my stainless wire from the hardware store. The types of steel can, sometimes, be difficult to tell apart. One easy trick is to put stainless in some pickle with a piece of scrap silver (pour some in a cup - you don't want to mess up your pickle pot). Then put the suspect wire into the same scenario. The steel and pickle solution will coat the silver with copper, the stainless won't. ( I don't know how I know this about stainless steel - can't find any backup evidence but, Rio Grande and other places sell Stainless Steel pickle warmers and baskets). Here is a link that might help as there are tons of steel alloys out there: www.engineeringtoolbox.com/identification-stainless-steel-d_383.html
