Beautiful video. I had two Japanese Black Tail Bantams and I let Jen set on some eggs. She hatched out 5 but lost one early on, then two weeks ago due to my being a bad mama, I let some varmint get my rooster, Brewster. I now have three little roos trying to learn to crow and one little pullet giggling at all of them. I loved watching you with the chickens. Thanks for sharing.

I have one broody hen and now that's it's freezing out I'm glad to have her. She keeps the eggs from freezing.I have noticed that most of 8 chickens lay in same nest since winter hit. The favorite nest is in a small heavy rubber feed bowl. Sometimes there's two chickens in there,one wanting to lay and pushes brooder over, lays and leaves.

i think it was sweet that you took her back in the nest box and gave her back the eggs, after she got attacked! i know you tried to get her not being a broody hen, but sometimes, showing kindness to them is the way, too!

She is a lovely girl. My broody hen has sat of five eggs for three weeks and they started to hatch today. Something happened to the first one to hatch it looked like a healthy chick but I found it dead under the hen. The second one is alive and peeping waiting over night to see if the other three hatch.

I put false eggs underneath her. It's so natural, and I hate to distress them and force them to stop. Golf balls work too. No babies, and let her have her brood time, give her some peace of mind. Really nice video .. I'm in a bit of a pickle and maybe you may be able to help. A few days ago a wild hen came to our house out of nowhere and decided to stay, no matter how many shoos and threats that we or anyone made to her she refused to leave so after seeing her persistence we decided to let her be and not mess with her. Now our house is in a suburban area where cats and maybe a few dogs (all stray) are extremely common however nobody ever thought a Hen would just waltz into our house like this and decide to stay just cuz she well... bloody well can. she is in the lawn area where she clearly enjoys herself a lot all day long but at night she jumps up on a thick branch of a small plant we have and sleeps on that. More over we have a mirror lying around near our garden so she spends most of her time in front of it and we've simply guessed she thinks it has some company or something. My mother has warmed up to her and feeds her regularly but I'm worried for the hen now cuz its very very cold at night so her being up on that tree would certainly freeze her. However we keep her well fed throughout the day so she can brave the cold at night. Any kind of advice will be appreciated. Regards.

+ermistan Aww, so cool to have a stray hen pick your house to live. Chickens are at the bottom of the food chain. Everything wants to eat them or just kill them for the fun of it. They have horrible eyesight in the dark and really have no chance at night if something smells them and can get to them. During the day it is hard to be a chicken too if there are dogs, coyotes, etc around. If you want to keep her, I would suggest making her a safe enclosure to go into at night. Do you have a backyard where you could move her? She doesn't need a fancy place, just a secure structure like a rabbit cage to keep her safe at night. If you enclose her in a small area with the cage you want her to use, she will go into it by herself if you leave the door open. Once a chicken finds a safe place, or is kept in a certain place for a few days they will automatically go back to that same place every evening. So it would only take a few evenings of moving her into the cage you want her to go into, until she would go there by herself. And then you would just need to close the door each night to keep her safe.

It is the pecking order at work. The more dominant chickens will peck others when they are annoyed by them. If the chicken fights back and the other backs down, then she will be higher up in the pecking order. When you watch your chickens you will see who is on top and who is on the bottom. Sometimes the ones at the bottom need a little protection. I always feel sorry for the weaker ones. But that's nature :)

Are those Buff Orpingtons? On a side note, my silkie finally went broody today. I'm certain she's sitting on one of her own eggs in addition to the two I gave her. I'm making plans to transfer her over to a safer spot; where she is now, I'm very worried. I've got a nest made for her, and I can set up a spot for it easily enough. Thanks to you, I know that merely transferring her once won't snap her out of broodiness. It'll make it that much more easy to get her situated.

Thanks, I am glad you like the videos! I hope you get to hatch out some babies. Having a good broody hen is the key :) (or an incubator, lol) Some hens just never go broody but there are certain breeds that are more likely. For me, buff orpingtons and black australorps have been the ones to go broody and successfully hatch babies. I have plans to add more chicken videos, stay tuned! :)

Thank you, I get so much enjoyment from my chooks not to mention the eggs and garden fertilizer. There really is a true pecking order. @shadowofjuniperhill

Sorry, I didn't see your comment until today. When a hen is a good broody, she will sit for quite a while, in my experience, for several weeks even without eggs. The hen in the video is still sitting tight on an empty nest.Some hens are better at sitting than others but your hen should stay on the nest. I would probably give her all the eggs now and let her start sitting on them and just move the eggs and the hen to the new location when you have it ready. Good luck!

I'm going to start with chickens how do you stop a brody hen
@kats2563
@kats2563 8 жыл бұрын
+OMGgaming There are several ways to stop a broody hen, some ways, some people find cruel... But to each their own. First you don't want to create an environment for brooding! Sometimes chickens will brood no matter what you do (some breeds are more prone to it than others, too) - which means, making sure that you remove eggs daily. If there is an egg build up, it's almost a promise you're going to end up with a broody hen. Broody hens stop laying and the longer they brood the longer they are going to NOT lay eggs for you. To stop a broody hen you can remove her from the nesting boxes daily, hourly whatever you can manage. When a hen broods, she stops eating as much, her body temp rises in order to incubate the eggs. So the idea is to cool down her belly! This is where some people take cruel measures - by putting ice packs under the hen or by dumping cold water on them. :( I'd never dump cold water on my hens! You can also put them in a broody cage, built or bought, it is basically a cage with the bottom open (like a dog cage) stood on top of something to circulate air under it to cool her off. Getting the broody out of a hen can take 1 day to a couple of weeks. Depends on the hen, and how long she's already been brooding for.

Why did the second chicken peck the first? It looked like they were mad at her for being broody. Would she have gotten pecked anyway because the second chicken is just a bully (reinforcing the pecking order), or what? Why is being broody something you need to break chickens of, if you can still just take the eggs out from under them? I understand not wanting to breed more chicks at a given time, but is it bad for the hen, or bad for some other reason? I've never raised chickens so am very curious.

i think the other Chicken was just getting on to her for not sitting on the eggs ,,, basically saying " get back on your eggs :) "
@thekweewee
@thekweewee 10 жыл бұрын
Broody hens need to be 'broken' because of a few reasons depending on your motives. They stop laying eggs firstly, so as an egg producing bird, broodiness is not a desirable state for her to be in. Theyalso become so dedicated to hatching chicks (even when you take eggs away) that they starve themselves/pull their feathers out/lose ranking in the pecking order and get bullied. Which relates to your initial question!

I don't think the alfalfa i buy is organic so it is probably wishful thinking on my part to hope that it isn't GMO. Their feed is also more than likely made with GMO corn too. It is sad that it is so difficult or expensive to not feed them GMO. I really hate the thought of the alfalfa being sprayed with round up and then fed to our animals. I need to look into the source of my alfalfa further. Thanks.
