This is one of my absolute favorite songs ever. I never tire of it! This song was written by Tony Joe White who also had a big hit in 1969 called "Poke Salad Annie". "A Rainy Night In Georgia" was written in 1970.

I still remember when my mom bought this 45 record. I was 9 years old. My father was overseas in the military and my mother was missing him terribly as we all were. The song reminded her of my father. Rest In Peace Dad.

Brook's masculine voice over a love song filled with violins and the harmonica is beautifully contrasted. The lyrical line "I put your picture to my chest" is suggesting a lost love, and so, he feels that this rainy night in Georgia is raining all over the word because he's hurting so much. I heard this song as a child, but never noticed the violins and harmonica.

The song has such a relaxed and lush feel to it and Benton's voice is so rich and warm. You just fall into it so easily. He did a wonderfully uptempo duet with Dinah Washington that was a big hit for them called A Rockin' Good Way (to Mess Around and Fall in Love) that shows his versatility.

There are several songs about Georgia. This one by Brook Benton is my favorite. I used to play this all the time in high school!My second favorite is, Gladys Knight's Midnight train to Georgia. Keep doing what you do. Your insights on the songs I know so well, are insightful. Considering it's your first time hearing them.
