Something else about Pudding's backstory is that it also reveals something about Big Mom and the way she runs things. She doesn't really care about her kids unless they are one of two things: strong/useful, or able to meet her ideal when it comes to looks. Basically, unless they're pretty or capable, she won't value her kids more than any other person. So regular kids can get away with bullying Big Mom's kids unless that kid has a friend protecting them or someone else within the family who cares enough to protect them. Also Luffy hiding in the cake was a great idea, but it wasn't a strategic one. He just thought it would be really fun.

yep. its pretty easy to see why chiffon and praline so easily turned on her. why would they stay with a large family headed by an neglectful, abusive mother when they can be with people who genuinely love them?

Here, this right here is why Jinbei is called "Boss". Also a great touch in the manga is that you have to Where's Waldo Brook during this moment and then they focus on him in the last few panels just as he winds up his hammer. It was so good

I love how Sanji plays that. If Big Mom knew even the slightest thing about him, she would've known shocking him with his bride having a third eye wouldn't bother him at all. Since he knows nothing about Pudding's past, his reaction was genuine. Oda gets us Pudding twice, we like her, then we hate her, then we like (or at least are sympathetic with) her again. Personal top 5 arc. 16:21, oh he is for sure. A real Goofy Goober. 20:38, a true big brain moment!

that's the theme of whole cake island: family bonds. found family vs. blood family. despite how large they are, the charlotte family isn't a happy or healthy one and that's on big mom herself. she has no idea what a real family looks like and thus just uses her kids as poltical pieces to be used as her whim. its why lola ran away from the family to find a proper and loving husband (which she does, FYI) and why her twin sister and praline sided with their own families over their blood family.

Oda introducing an initially lovable character in Pudding, hate her so much during the middle of the arc and then possibly like her again during the climax. I mean it's not that hard to write tragic characters with how awful as a parent Big Mom is but there's a certain Oda charm on how his "evil" characters are humanized and then mellowed out after a humanizing encounter with one of our crew. But on the other side of the spectrum, there's Doflamingo lmfao.
