That center says it has seen a sharp increase in New Yorkers acting as so-called "freelance recyclers." CBS New York's Hannah Kliger reports.

It's terrible, i see too many elderly people doing this, rummaging through garbage cans. These people need as much support as possible because at least they're still working and trying to earn. Nobody ever came to this country dreaming of collecting cans.

Why do we feed and house migrants, but not these elderly.

The elderly are collecting cans because social security and disability do not provide enough money to survive in a constantly inflating economy where migrants are put before citizens and taxpayers

When I lived in Taiwan a lot of older people did this for extra money and to improve the community, but they would actually collect a lot of cardboard, in Taiwan the recycling centres would pay for cardboard and many types of items as well. There was very little litter. Everything got picked up!

What a great guy that manages that place. He’s perfect for that job. The canning association leader who paid for her daughter’s college blew my mind.

You don’t see this in Michigan-not even Detroit. Everyone recycles their own bottles and cans. You pay 10 cents bottle deposit and redeem them for 10 cents. People aren’t rummaging through the garbage looking for bottles.

I used to work as a super and some of these guys were respectful and didn’t make a mess, but others left big messes. Idk how I feel about it. I just wish we had better job training programs

Why not force the producers of the products to match the amount approved for can recycling, so it does not fall solely on the backs of consumers.

Because the producers of those products are corporate leaders, who can afford lobbyists, who influence politicians and their policy decisions to fit the needs and conveniences of corporations. Another example would be Republicans creating tax cuts for the most wealthy
