I don’t think that is true. Can you point me to the interview where he said this? He wrote this song with Craig Wiseman and I have never been able to find anything that said this was based in his personal experience 🤷🏼♀️

US Marine Srgt here. Along with my wife who passed away on 10/13/2020 to cancer at age 38. She was also a Marine srgt. We were deployed to Afghanistan together. At that time she was just my best friends. She introduced me to your channel. Even bought your merchandise and talked to you on Twitter a few times. I remember her wearing those Gibby Gang socks around the house all the time lol. I appreciate your loyalty to the military brother. We love ya big in this family. I hesitate to ask for prayer but Devon and anyone always like would like to pray for my strength to believe again but more importantly my family and a brother that is dealing with drugs. It's not sad. It is amazing. The promise that we are given for those that believe. There is not a time that tears are not streaming down my face by the end of this song. I grew up with Brooks and Dunn every weekend in the truck going fishing with my Grandpa. By random circumstance I saw them in concert a few weeks ago and they killed it. Last Summer I became a believer again, and this song is incredibly powerful.

Simple one for you Devin, 8 years in the service Army, Gulf War vet 1990-1991 (served 1990-1998). Got me some stage 4 melanoma on my back. I am currently 49 and finding it hard to breath daily. Would like a shout up to God or two from some. If not, no worries, I have lived an ok life, could of been better, but we do what we can.

I lost my dad a couple of days ago. The first time I found myself alone, I played this song and cried till I had no tears left. This song always gives me strength in times of grief because it reminds me that I have a reason to keep fighting against the pain and doubts

Before even listening to the reaction itself, I had to make note that I've never seen this song as sad and I've heard it 1,000+ times. There is sadness in the song but its message is the opposite of sad.
