It's horrible that Channel 4 buried the last episode in a graveyard slot, with no real fanfare. In fact, it's horrible that they axed it. It did need attention, it had been sliding for about five years. But given how Hollyoaks has been in a much worse state all its life, it's a massive injustice.

The end of an era, truer words couldn't have been spoken, Brookie was a big part of my teenage and college years and how Channel 4 axed it and put the last episode on in a graveyard slot is deplorable, I'm glad the producers (and Jimmy) got to stick it to C4 bring in Jack Michaelson (a play on Michael Jackson, who pulled the plug on Brookside) and then lynched the character, and giving them the finger with the game over message, Jimmy winking at the viewers thus breaking the 4th wall and Redmond putting the end of the Grange Hill theme on the end of Brookie's credits then the sound of a prison wall being slammed, it was like "Fuck you channel 4, I'm going out in style" In the last scene where Jimmy walks away you can tell Dean is both gutted and pissed off at Brookside ending

As is often documented, Brookie got there with the big stories first ahead of its rivals, so it's a shame it only attracted a fraction of their viewing figures. Even with big characters like the Grants and Corkhills gone, it still managed equally engaging storylines such as the Jordaches and comedy with the likes of Bev and Ron, until it kind of lost its way a bit towards the end, with the new cinematic filming technique, sensationalism and messed around in the schedules so nobody really knew when it was on. The anniversary dvd is good, but some better eps could have been chosen for inclusion. Never tire of hearing the theme tune either.

@97channel4 жыл бұрын
The character Jack Michaelson, his name is an anagram of Michael Jackson. Not the pop singer, but the one-time boss of Channel 4 by that name who was responsible for leading the show towards cancellation. When they string the character from the window, there's a double meaning in what that represents. There's also a dig at Big Brother, which had overtaken Brookside to become the flagship Channel 4 show by that time, and is cited as prompting Channel 4 to feel comfortable to risk axing Brookie, safe in the knowledge that their income would not collapse because of the new prime time hit. It's all there, in the bit about soundbiting to a bunch of kids and the influence of reality TV.
@Onmysheet4 жыл бұрын
I can understand Phil Redmond's message but this just comes as bitterness. It's as if he's got a chip on his shoulder. According to Wikipedia, Michael Jackson became chei executive of channel 4 in 1998, which was around the time Brookside's heart and soul began to fade in the very end of that year. They bring in a new producer who changed the whole style of the show with dire storylines.

I remember this final episode. My parents taped it for me because it was on so late. Watching it has brought back memories. I wish Barry Grant had slaughtered Michaelson. Techinally he was responsible because he planted the idea in their heads by telling them a story about a stranger coming in and annoying people and the whole neighbourhood would kill him. The best dialogue was between Michaelson and Barry Grant. " what are you looking at" "History".

I didn’t know Brookside had swearing included. How come Hollyoaks doesn’t have that? It would’ve made the show more realistic instead of more fake.
@RedCyanPhotos5 жыл бұрын
When they decided to axe the show, they shoved it on late at night. I already thought it should’ve had swearing with the likes of Barry Grant Jimmy Corkhill, Tinnhead etc! I suppose they treat us to a little bit of swearing before they decided to pull the plug on the lot lol! I feel if they had of allowed swearing earlier, it would’ve made some of the characters for more believable, but then they might not have gone over the top with some of the storylines too. I was sad when it was shoved on late night weekends, when people are in bed tired from working all week or out having a good time with their friends, it’s a really bad time for TV ratings, but of course it was to be axed by the time they moved the slot & only showed once a week. I just think it should’ve been on TV just slightly later & through the week- when it used to be on, just so they could include the odd swearword and make the more gangster characters believable.
