Check Out My 100s Of Fire Making Videos... Broomsedge aka Broomstraw has those fluffy seeds that work beautifully for a flash tinder. They quickly brought the straw to flames from just one strike of the keychain ferro rod.
I started out today's practice igniting Loblolly Pine Needles, then a collection of leaves from Poplar, Maple, and Black Gum trees, then broke out the Broomstraw, and finished up with the last of the Pine Needles. Come check out how many One Strike Ignites I got from the Pine Needles and Grass tinders!... GET OUT THERE AND PRACTICE!... Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks!!!

In Sweden the pine needles are much shorter but i have collected a bit bag of them and you are still my fire guru.

I hope yours are better than ours. Our pine with short needles is called Shortleaf Pine. It has small pine cones that grow along the slender branches sort of in a row. The Shortleaf Pine needles and its pine cones are not as reactive as the other species I prefer to use.... but... they are better than no pine needles at all. Thanks!

I believe it. Some flash tinder doesn't burn hot enough to ignite and burn the main tinder itself... This stuff does! Thanks!

You are right David, probably I should be making one for my key chain as well... In the bush I’m usually using a bigger one, so I don’t face the “slipping problem”.

@@DavidWestBgood2ppl Yes, actually BECAUSE you did. Also I like a wooden handle as it absorbs the shock better than fiberglass or metal.

Dave you made me laugh-out-loud when you said "I guess nobody else can relate to it". I have a 3" ferro rod on my key chain also, but must admit there's no panel nail in the end of it.

I like the firesteel modification, I'm just a little Leary about having something pointy in my pocket. I'm guessing you haven't had any problems with it

You can use a pen cap or piece of clear tubing for a cover. No sticks in the leg.

David, from taco soup to drilled ferro rods, you have a most interesting and informative channel - one of my favorites. What is the top of your table made from? It looks and sounds like a steel panel, but I never see any rust. All I know is if I positively had to have a fire started for a million dollars, you would be the MAN ! Keep it up.

A10" piece of galvanized duct pipe... Galvanizing is not supposed to accept spray paint well but I scuffed it with sandpaper, used denatured alcohol to clean, then applied high temp spray paint. The thin skin of metal expands and contracts WILDLY in the weather's temperature changes... My earlier videos show a 1/8" plate on the top of a much larger fire table. When I downsized the fire table, I couldn't bring myself to cut down that great piece of plate from my first table.
