The WDR Big Band is currently the most important European big band and that is reflected in the numerous Grammy awards it has won in recent years. Each member of the big band is a soloist with their own timbre, which makes the orchestra’s sound unique. The WDR Big Band travels constantly around the world from Cologne to perform with the biggest jazz stars of the moment, but strangely enough, it has rarely been heard in Belgium. The WDR Big Band's programme covers the entire spectrum of jazz and jazz-related music, from traditional to avant-garde. This also includes Latin jazz, world music, fusion and crossover, all true to the motto "Musical boundaries are musical challenges". The big band also has links to the European tradition and in particular to jazz with European roots. It is therefore hardly surprising that Toots Thielemans on several occasions was their guest and that is why we are very pleased that the band will be performing at the Théâtre de Verdure on 1 July to present a special TOOTS programme with Dutch harmonica player Hendrik Meurkens and bandleader Jörg Achim Keller.
