It’s amazing to me how people are always downplaying less expensive machines when they have machines that cost a fortune sitting in a corner not working. I went to a beginner class at Joann’s and the whole time the instructor was downplaying my “cheap” singer simple 3232. I eventually told her to back off. I think it’s ridiculous to spend lots of money on a machine unless you are doing lots of sewing or have a business. More does not always mean better

Cynthia Powell I’m sorry you had that experience! Singer brand machines will always be my first sewing love. One of the reasons I was never was a fan of Brother was because most of the machines I had seen were computerized and always giving its owners some kind of trouble. This was back in the early 2000’s. If one thing shorted out, the whole thing was broken. I couldn’t be bothered with that. From the time I was 7 until I left for college, I used an old hand-me-down metal frame singer and I loved it. It was powerful and I knew how to fix it. If I had it with me I would use it. The Janome I have had a good run without any major issues- it’s 13 years old and also a hand-me-down. It has just enough functions and plenty of power for me to do professional sewing all of these years.

I agree. I find myself collecting vintage machines in which I do little on, yet, I see people buying cheaper new machines, but I dont down them because atleast they USE them.. The Value of the machine is in its use!

There's a thread cutter on the left side of the machine as well. I've only used my aunts singer machine a few times before buying my own and I bought refurbished from brother. So far I like it as a self taught complete novice. It was nice watching someone did exactly what I did lol. Thank you very much.

If anyone wants to see the DVD and doesn’t have a player anymore (my desktop computer has one) a few people have downloaded it onto KZbin so you can watch it there - it’s not specific to this machine but it has the basic startup info. Great video by the way- yours not theirs! Thanks!

With this machine you don't need a different foot for the blind stich...

The reason your machine jammed is you are turning the hand wheel away from you. You always turn the hand wheel toward you never away from you.

...only when the needle is threaded; when not threaded you can turn the other way...

Also, pull thread pin up. Quality thread always makes s difference. Suggestion: hold threads in back slightly when beginning to stitch.

As an expert technician and retired Quality Engineer; I say Oh Brother you should've gotten a singer!

Ronald Sanchez Lol. Singers are one of my favorites to sew on. My first machine as a kid was my grandmother’s old metal frame Singer. It’s very cool that you are a technician! Thanks for watching.

If I were to buy this would I be able to make clothes or jackets on the sewing machine?
@Sewintoitlessons4 жыл бұрын
Alaa Dobashi absolutely! I have made dresses, denim skirts, costumes, a blanket and more on this machine. It is important, though to use the right needle for whatever fabric you are sewing.

Hi Laree! Thanks for making this video! I want to ask you how has been your overall experience using the lx3817 brother machine and if you do recommend it for beginners, since I am planning on buying my very first sewing machine but I just can't decide on which one to buy and this seems like a good option.

Just last week I got one of the refurbished LX3817 sewing machines for $43 and free shipping to my home. It looks and sews just like a completely new machine. Do you have a video sewing denim with yours like you mentioned in this video? I did notice the presser foot was up when threading the upper thread path which is important to mention for new sewists to learn to do.
@Sewintoitlessons5 жыл бұрын
Myra Thomas, hi! Yes, I actually saw the refurbished machines online. They are a great deal. I plan to order some in the near future to use for group lessons. Thank you for pointing out the presser foot! I will have a denim video out soon with more sewing tips as well. 😊

@@Sewintoitlessons Thank you for your reply. I've subscribed to your channel so I'll be sure to watch the denim sewing video when it is ready. Like your voice, accuracy and manner of explaining things in your video. The camera work is easy to see too. Before long you'll have a big youtube following so hope you keep on with videos. How did you get the machine to stop bunching the stitches like it did here!? Mines doing this
@Sewintoitlessons4 жыл бұрын
Hi! Try turning the tension dial one number at a time and test the stitch. Something to keep in mind: higher numbers =higher tension; lower numbers =lower tension. I hope this helps! 🙂

I just bought this and I am very intimated. I have never sewn unless you count hand sewing bows.
@Sewintoitlessons5 жыл бұрын
Jacqueline Allen hand sewing is a great place to start, but using the machine is different. To give you a little encouragement, make sure your machine is threaded correctly. Go easy on the petal as you start a stitch. Remember that you don’t need to push or pull the fabric. The machine will feed the fabric trough, you just need to steer it, like a car steering wheel. Practice on smaller pieces of fabric until you’re comfortable. I hope that helps!

Can you use this machine on heavy material like Demi and heavier..since you teach group lesson do you recommend a good machine for a beginner who uses heavy material
@Sewintoitlessons5 жыл бұрын
Personally, I love Singer sewing machines. I learned to sew on a metal frame vintage Singer machine. Today the Singer Heavy Duty is one of my favorites. Beside Brother machines, I’ve seen beginners prefer Bernina machines like the 2 series. I don’t remember if they have an adjustable speed setting, but Berninas are not very fast compared to a Singer. The Janome model I have has an adjustable speed setting.
