I have a SQ 9185. I sew A LOT. I've had the machine for about 6 yrs. I keep 2 machines going so I don't have to keep rethreading my main machine when I change thread colors. Well, my other machine was the Brother SQ 8100, it's a cheaper model. I've hardly used it and it broke already!! So I want to buy another SQ 9185 but I don't think they're selling them any more. I think they've replaced them with the SQ 9285's. Boo. The 92 is almost 100 more than the 91.

Do you happen to have an extra manual?? I picked this model up at a thrift for $15.00! Clean it up and had to buy a bobbin casing and I’m using my power cord from my other Brother Machine so win win but I like to reference the manual ever so often..
@MakeSewingStudio2 жыл бұрын
I don't have an extra one but usually the companies have a free downloadable manual on their site somewhere. I think you can also buy a regular one for about 10-12 dollars. You definitely need to get one. Congrats on getting such a deal on a great machine!
@sj41772 жыл бұрын
I have this machine too. 😊 have you ever oiled it? The manual says you don't have to, but that seems odd to me.
@MakeSewingStudio2 жыл бұрын
I don't think I've ever oiled it. I know it seems odd but it's never made those "I need oil" noises so I haven't done it. My Juki needs regular oil so I keep it nearby but not for the Brother machine.

@MakeSewingStudio2 жыл бұрын
Ugh. That's a bummer. See if you can find them for a good price on Wawak or Amazon. It shouldn't end up being very expensive, just a pain. Have fun with your machine!

I have this model machine but I don know how to use 1/4 foot. the needle dose not enter on position. how I can adjust it.thank you .
@MakeSewingStudio3 жыл бұрын
Once you have the 1/4 foot on you may have to still move your needle. Practice a stitch and if it's wrong adjust your needle and try again. Keep doing this until you are at a 1/4" seam allowance. THEN be sure to make a note in your manual (like "move needle to 5.5 for 1/4" seam" or whatever number works. I hope this makes sense! The great thing about these machines is you can adjust the width to get the correct distance.

If I'm doing free motion quilting, do I need to put the lower feed dogs down on this machine?
@MakeSewingStudio2 жыл бұрын
@@kanboon2985 Yes, you should lower the feed dogs first. :)
@marysews16 ай бұрын
You have to adjust it to be a straight stitch in the center position. Keep in mind that the needle is set to a straight stitch in the left position when you first turn it on. This would be stitch 02.

What are the setting for the machine quilting. Do you change the stitch length? I'm having grief with this. . . Thanks!
@MakeSewingStudio7 жыл бұрын
I didn't change the stitch length but adjusted the speed so I could have control over the stitches while I was quilting. I didn't adjust the tension either but left it where it was. My stitches are not perfectly consistent but do get better once I've been doing it for awhile.
@koriewilson36437 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your reply! Seems like most people say to drop the stitch length to zero. This causes major looping on the back. Thanks for your help. I'm trying to learn this.

I bought this same machine a friend recommended it. She sees dresses and quilts. She is going to teach me - but I want to get in latter down the road in repurposing clothes. Is this a machine that can handle light to heavy material?
@MakeSewingStudio6 жыл бұрын
Patricia, I think this machine is perfect for light to medium weight fabrics. I think canvas would be okay too, just not lots of layers. If you're doing heavy weight layers or anything like leather you may want to get something with a little more industrial strength.
@patriciamckinney22296 жыл бұрын
@@MakeSewingStudio thank you for your response. Maybe I should learn with this first and purchase a heavier working machine later? Like learn to crawl before I walk-ha-ha. Can you tell me where I may purchase a refurbished machine and possibly return mine for a lower price?? I just purchased it online walmart Site for a 150.00 3 yr.worrentee. Have not gotten it yet! Can you sew heavy materials like jeans? Or is this the wrong machine for me?
@MakeSewingStudio4 жыл бұрын
I think this would work for denim but If you're going to do a lot of thick fabric you might consider something a little more industrial than this one.

Why have all these stitches for quilting....straight sewing is hard on this machine
@Marla.225 жыл бұрын
I would much rather have a machine with an auto thread cutter. Too much thread wasted and all those strings just from pulling it to the back and cutting is irritating to me. But this is a good machine, I use it as my backup but I love my Singer quantum 9960 with auto thread cutter
@MakeSewingStudio5 жыл бұрын
I love auto thread cutters and I completely agree about the wasted thread from pulling out a length to get started. Only one of my machines came with an auto cutter (my Juki) but I hope it will be more common in other machines soon.
