I tried about 6 times and also turned the main gear counter clock wise slightly(it clicks) did this a few times as well. It finally worked. I just printed around 150 copies for a mailing. Copies look great have another 150 to print. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! saved me $60. I would have never figured out the spring or the tab to saddle part. I used to do the tape trick on the older model that worked also. Thanks again for taking the time for figuring it out.

This video has been around for 6 years and it's still helping people! Thank you for this video. Not sure why the toner cartridge needs a stop gear. We all know when we're running low on toner - you can literally see it on the page you're printing. It's hard not to think it's a cash grab.

I have watched several videos of tonner, cartridge , gears assembly etc. But this demonstration/ video is unique, well explained by step by step explanation with caution, proper assembly or adjustment to the point. James - Well demonstration, performance great job. 😄👍 😆👍😀 😂

Excellent instruction! I've reset three cartridges accumulated in storage. After removing the right hand cover, I only loosen the left side enough to lift the gear interfacing with the D-gear allowing me to turn the D clockwise until it's an upright "D". Then I complete the task as you've described, but add the part of turning the final big wheel counter-clockwise slightly 'til it lightly clicks in place. Thanks to you & Cerberus's comment, I'm back in business.

thank you for this. all the videos I saw had the different style of gear. I had the same issue as the other guy. When I first tried this, my printer would still say that I was out of toner. The trick to making this work is that once it's all screwed back together, the main gear needs to be turned counter clockwise until it clicks. after I did that, I was able to successfully refill several toner cartridges.

It's been 11 months since I did this and I had to refill again, forgetting this critical step. I'll underscore Cerberus' comment as I saw exactly the same thing. When I reassembled the last gear exactly as shown in the video, my printer still gave an out of toner error. To get past this, I turned this gear counterclockwise just a small amount until it clicked (maybe 10 degrees or so). At that point, the cartridge no longer read as empty.

Perfect. Thank you. I noticed that my TN-660 was just like yours and, prior to finding this video, the spring came off and I had no idea exactly where it sat. (I'd already figured out the gear sequence and alignment.) Your video helped show me how to reassemble, so that the spring was properly placed and armed.

My god I can't express how much you've helped me I truly appreciate your video and in depth process of showing us where things go and how they should look. Also after I did that to my toner I went on my DCP-L2540DW and hit the menu button on the printer and went to general setup and scrolled to number 4 replace toner and hit continue on it so that it would allow my printer to continue printing because when I tried it without doing that step it wouldn't allow me to print and kept giving me the replace your toner dialog but after I did that I was able to print so I thought I'd share that if any of you guys had a similar hiccup like I did. Again I really do appreciate you video and explanation. :)

You are a total scientist!!! Worked perfectly. I tried the key pad press combo but that no longer seems to work for my printer. However, setting the gear just right - exactly as you demonstrated works. The gear just has to be in that sweet spot. Even if it is in the correct position it may need just a bit of a nudge once installed if the no toner light comes on. Thank You!

That was great. Long video but packed with useful info so well done. Good camera shots but a couple spots could have used some brighter light but that aspect didn't keep me from reassembling these gears. I was very close but the parts about aligning the D and the placement of the spring made me confident that it was done properly. My thumbs up that I thumbed is a "Party Thumbs Up" which is 25x more "P" powerful.

I have to refill again and followed the directions, did the d put the little thing inside the saddle, had the cover fit into the gear like a key and doest want to rest on the printer. it keeps says replace toner. i did it the first time now it doesnt want to do it again.

After following your directions to the letter, I still needed to turn the 4th gear 1/4" counterclockwise until I heard a click. The 4th gear is properly positioned when there is 1/4" rotational play (clockwise to counterclockwise).

I might add, the replacement cartridge I popped the fill cap off opposite side of the gears and put in after market toner, still gave me 'no toner'. On the gear side, the far rear (to the right looking at gears) on mine has a little slot facing fwd, with the 'keyway' tab popped out through it: you have to depress the 'yoke' in the center and rotate it about 15 degrees CW (right) past the little black embossed arrow pointing at the circumfrence, which is on the black body. With the 'key' no longer sticking out the slot, the printer is happy again. PS NEVER buy an inkjet or HP printer.

I just did all this step by step, but only wanted to trick the printer into letting me extend the life of the toner cartridge. I decided to take off the toner replacement side and noticed the bottom gear was missing (not there). This is weird. The printer now shows "put cartridge back in" on the screen even though the cartridge is in. Anyone have this problem?

On the gear that has the stopper tab, Why not just cut it off flush with the gear train? No more stoppage, or orientation concerns.

James Richhart Next time I have mine apart I think I will. My toner hopper/reservoir cover seems to have a small hole, and I was more concerned with fixing that and getting it back together. I finally used a small o-ring. I did do the “ D “ orientation that .you suggested though. I didn’t have any springs to contend with on my toner cartridge. Thanks for the video it was helpful.
