To get to God, you can not reject his Prophethood. Like when Satan rejected Adam AS as Prophet and viceroy on the Earth, what happened to him, Allah swt rejected Satan. So the jews at the time attacked Zacharia and John AS so Prophet Jesus AS had to make this point to them, that you can not worship God but reject him and disobey him as a Prophet Hence, the punishment of destruction of the Temple.
