I love how the song goes soft when it talks about how she takes the people who didn't die in battle. As the lyrics say, she is the mother of the sick and unchosen, implying that she is kind to those who deserve it. She only tortures the souls of the wicked that come to her

Hela, will embrace us all who are deemed unworthy of either valhalla or folkvangr.
@nordoceltic72252 жыл бұрын
Hel is the keeper of the dead, the one who claims dominion, and protection of mortal kind. While Valhalla will take those who will make fine servants of the shining halls, and the other gods pluck their chosen as they shall, Hel takes all the rest, those who lived good or ill, rich or poor, they stand as equals for judgement before the Queen of Midnight. Though her dominion mortals who were in no position to impress the other gods and be chosen and thus die a "normal" death are not lost to wander the planes dazed, confused, and easy prey for those things that were never alive. Instead they come to her halls, rest, and are reborn to live again. Without Hel's mercy mortal kind would be doomed to be consumed in death, and without the wheel of souls returning to life after repose, where would the souls of newly born mortals come from? Its notable that the ancient Norse did not see her a villain. That utterly simplistic view would come much later from people who looked at the Norse religion with the eyes of Christians, failing to understand that the Norse didn't believe in such simpleton concepts as the polarity of all-good and all-evil deities. This point needs driven home because even modern Norse religion fans still look at the "unchosen" as people who are forsaken, which is still a very Christian way of looking at things, and incorrect. The common dead were not at all forsaken, they were simply not-chosen, and would go to join their families in the afterlife. Helheim was not like the Christian Hell, the dominion of evil and sinners. Helheim was the place of rest and repose after life for the living, with the full recognition the extreme majority of people never would be great heroes to be carried off by the Valkyries. If anything Helheim should never be thought of as a place of pain and torment, even if some parts of it serve as prisons for the damned who failed Hel's judgement, but it should be seen as a place of somber peace, repose, and remembrance. And in turn it was Hel who punished the wicked, but also gave mercy to the common mortals after life was over. Death is of course terrifying to the mind of a mortal, but the keeper of the dead is surprisingly merciful when you think about it.

@@nordoceltic7225 Well written, and I agree, but what I'm most curious about is this: If Hel treated well the souls that came to her (talking about the unchosen here, not the ones that failed her judgement and would have been considered "evil" like murderers), why would the dead rise against the Aesir during Ragnarök? Is Hel, being partly a Jotunn, treating well the dead to "brainwash" them and teach them that the Aesir are evils in reality, and deserve Ragnarôk? Or are the dead rising back up during Ragnarök and fighting against the Aesir and the Einherjar because they have some sort of Stockholm syndrome induced by Hel's grace and good treatment? No idea if there's a pre-christian era recorded Saga that talks about this more in detail (I specify pre-christian because as you said, when christinaity came over, a lot of things changed in the nordic myths, especially relating to Hel, Helheim and Ragnarök)

Love the story where Frigg asks Hel to send back Baldr after he was killed. And Hel promised to do so if every living thing (and death thing, can't remember) would weep for him. All did but one woman (supposedly Loki in disguise) and thus Baldr had to stay in the Underworld until Ragnarök.

As I understand it, Baldr's death and Hel's refusal to release him is basically what kicks off Ragnarok. Tyr, righteous god of justice and war sacrificed his own hand because when Fenrir couldn't free himself, he ate the hand as promised. Theoretically, based off what we do know, Hel would have been cast out around our own age of 8, as her brother Fenrir was bound around late "puppyhood" as he kept growing and growing, bigger and stronger. Seeing Jormungandr doing similar, they hurled him into the sea when he was still small enough to be held This would mean as she began to show power as a young child, they'd have already been planning how to contain her. What little I've been able to research, in my own language, suggests half of her was healthy and hale, the other half sunken and pale. The pale side is often treated like skeleton, but what if, like Odins eye (sometimes the one he sacrificed is referred to as his "dim" eye, possibly due to being at the bottom of the well)...what if it was a sort of kenning or reference to having a different look, perhaps partially mummified or--dare I suggest--frozen? This song is beautiful. It makes me want to meet The Goddess Of The Underground.
@echoesman34394 жыл бұрын
Well, it probably wouldn't very fun if you went there, though... I mean, if I remember correctly, Helheim is the worst place the dead can go. Niflheim might be worse (for criminals, maybe?), and that "the place where those who die in the sea go" I believe exists might not even be in the myths and turn out to be something I read from a book with the norse tales as it's setting.
@Corymbia4 жыл бұрын
@@echoesman3439 You're incorrect. Hel isn't a punishment. It's far from life, but as far as 'underground' afterlives though, it's actually quite nice
@kingdomofvinland88274 жыл бұрын
I think there might be a bit of confusion the underworld isn’t a punishment in Norse mythology there is a specific part of the underworld for punishment but mostly just a place where people did the same things they did in life, just in a different place

The cheese is pretty off putting even for a power metal band. If you just hear the songs and don't get exposed to the cheese, the band is phenomenal. This song in particular is excellent. Probably the best song of the album followed by Powersnake. Jörmungandr is one of the more interesting figures of the mythology.
