I loved all of her songs. You guys mentioned Laura Nyro and I was thinking how Laura felt about her music. Anyway Melanie was perfect for the times with her unusual & beautiful voice and words. RIP. Look what they’ve done to my song, Ma.

I was a guest in her home a few times. She was an incredible artist who deserved greater recognition. I wanted to meet her after I heard her recording of “Chart Song”. Amazingly, she sang it for me sitting across her dining table. I miss her “light”. An important artist and a great loss to the music world.

That's the way TV music segments were set up in that era. Serious and focused like in a folk music club. I fell under Melanie's spell in 1971. I was 11. I'm still under it and I'm not the only one. Also, in 1971, she was the highest paid singer, male or female, in the world, having 3 top 40 hits simultaneously on Billboard. She crossed security warnings to play at the doomed Powder Ridge festival, an ice cream truck loaning her a spot to plug a mike. The patrons had already paid. She was the only one to play. A TRUE LEGEND. Not to mention " Brand New Key". Nice tribute, THANK YOU ❤

When Melanie was on Ed Sullivan, right after she performed with "all the audience circled around her" they were all very quiet and loving just to be near her and hear Melanie sing, Ed Sullivan said "I've never seen such dedicated loyal loving fans in awe of you, I've never seen anything like this on my show, other than Elvis, you are very special"...Melanie's audiences were almost always like this, very quiet, circling all around her and paying attention to every word in her songs...I'm one of those loyal fans also, I saw her many many years ago at the Troubadour in LA and all of us (the audience) were spellbound, very quiet listening to Melanie singing live was just such a privilege.

The accent was so thick in the early days, I sometimes can't help wondering if it was slightly affected. Nevertheless it quickly receded and she became a much more sophisticated vocalist. She probably reached her peak as an artist a few years after her fame had faded.

She was from the Bronx, therefore she had that accent and it never seemed to have left her...I always loved her accent it went great with her songs..

@@Rhiannon011 She was born in Astoria, Queens not the Bronx and, if I'm not mistaken, spent most of her formative years growing up in New Jersey. But, fair enough, the NYC metro area and she definitely comes by her New York accent honestly. But her accent - especially in the early days - was all over the map and did sound almost British at times. Normal adolescent trying on identities stuff I think.

@@johnandert1611 Sorry thank you for correcting me, I'm not that familiar with different parts of New York and New Jersey but Melanie did have that kind of accent. Melanie has toured and traveled to Europe through her entire adult life, so maybe she picked up an accent, being there all time. Frankly loving Melanie from the very beginning of her first album and hearing her speak and sing, I never noticed any different type of accent, she always sounded the same to me, but what do I know hey?😎
