(German language. Enable English subtitles if needed!)
As you might or might not know, pure Catch and Release fishing is illegal in Germany. How are people dealing with it, especially those who are interested in conservation and protecting wild fish populations? This film follows 3 different groups trying to deal with the issue while pursueing different goals.

This looks like a great film, seems to be more about cultural understandings and traditions rather than just fishing. I'd think a must see for all anglers

A man here mentioned and intention to increase the harvesting limit for steelhead (correction: sea trout) from 40 to 50 cm. It's quite interesting, considering that in some EU states it is (and, quite frankly, has been for decades) at 60 cm. Just an observation..

exactly, 40cm is much too low......

There's no steelhead (=sea run rainbow trout) in Europe, but assuming you mean sea run brown trout, where is it 60cm? I'd like to go there... Sweden has 45 or 50, Norway 30-35 (!) Parts of Finland?

Yes, I meant Salmo trutta trutta, sea trout. You're absolutely right regarding stealhead, that was my error. Speaking of the minimum, I had to do some browsing and things turned out not what I expected... Feel free to correct any of the numbers below. I wouldn't be surprised if these limits have changed in the past n-teen years. So basically if we look at other countries neighbouring the Baltic sea, it appears Finland indeed has the minimum limit of 60 cm for the Archipelago Sea and Gulf of Bothnia, but limits for brown trout are off the charts at 50-60 cm depending on the location. Estonia has the minimum size for sea trout at 50 cm (but, rather interestingly, 36cm for brown trout, more than in many other countries), Latvia - 50 cm, Lithuania - 65 cm, Poland - 35 cm (30 cm for brown trout). Frankly speaking, I do not see a clear connection between these minimum limits and actual resources of the said fish in the rivers of a particular country. It's a mess, imho, considering everybody's catching fish from the same sea.

Lithuania at 65cm sounds interesting... I wonder what percentage of that catch is above that limit? On the Swedish west coast, it was 35cm for a long time, and then they bumped it to 45.(Along with net mesh sizes) It didn't take long for the above/below percentages to endup about where they were before. 65cm is a really big fish though. Usually the trout are pretty stationary (unlike Salmon), so the local environment can have a big effect on how fast they grow.

I have no idea regarding sea trout catch statistics in these countries. They're probably out there somewhere as so much is managed by computerised information systems these days, but even then it would be hard to estimate the reliability of such data, imho.

Is the goal of the government in Germany to kill sport fishing? Did I interpret the subtitles correctly that catch and release is illegal and a line caught fish has to be killed? Is it fair to say a 50 cm trout pinned with a #18 barbless hook is undergoing unimaginable suffering? And is there research to back that claim up?

In fact, it is far from being killed as we have millions of sport fishermen. Yes, CnR is in fact illegal as the intention of releasing every fish is not considered reasonable cause to go fishing whereas taking a fish for eating is. The reason for this lies in the history of central and eastern Europe, where fishing has historically always been a means to get food for simple people, in contrast to Great Britain and its colonies, where fishing and hunting has always been considered a sport, exlusive for the aristogracy. There are plenty of studies about fishes' ability to feel pain with different conclusions, so that is also a complex issue to discuss. CnR can in fact be done very wrong as many cases have shown, cases in which a rule against it would have prevented suffering. So CnR remains a controversial topic.

Brothers On The Fly Thanks for the explanation. I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I hope everyone is using best C&R practices but it seems like one could be in violation of the law by doing so. Regardless I really enjoy you videos and helps me to practice speaking German!

It is however interesting to note, that none of the Central / Eastern European countries has (so far) followed Germany "animalistic" move to ban CnR (only Switzerland sadly did so, but less strictly). To my knowledge even World Championships based on CnR rules have been held in the Czech Republic and Poland in recent years. Therefore this seems also to be an issue of "political culture". Sadly.
