In this video we have the brand new Brown Davis 150L long range fuel tank installed in the Ford Ranger Raptor and I check to see how this modification will affect the vehicles GVM.
Note: The standard factory tank in the Raptor is 80 Litres (not 85L) as I mention in the video.

Nathan welcome back mate. Solid effort on the build up of your truck making me jealous 😎 keep in mind for the fuel tank, right now they don’t talk properly to the DTE gauge. So the car thinks you are almost out of fuel and the fuel needle still reads almost full. Something I’m looking into now and probably something I should have added into the video 👍🏻

@@RoundTheFire thanks for the heads up mate, I was wondering that but forgot to ask. Have you thought about a throttle controller like an I drive? Everyone says they are so good but I am not sure how they would go with the Raptors mode selection like Sport and Baja. I want the throttle response on Sport Mode but the shifting of normal mode. I find putting it into Sport is way nicer to drive but around town the trans sits in the wrong gear.
@RoundTheFire
@RoundTheFire 5 жыл бұрын
That’s 100% exactly how I like the feel of my drive to be also, I don’t prefer the higher RPM of the Sport mode for around town. I use the “plug-n-go” throttle controller (it came as in a package deal with my power chip) Very simple to DIY install (I show how to put one in on my Power chip install video) I feel it complements all the terrain modes without interfering with their function and bridges the gap between having “sport mode” pick up and relaxed drive feel of “normal mode” The Legendex “thrust monkey” Is an identical product to the “plug-n-go” all comes down to how you want the switch to look 😎 Hands down the best mod I’ve made so far.

Gday Paul, thanks for the great comment mate 👍🏻. The Raptor is a great rig, I haven’t regretted getting one, hands down the best all round Ute I’ve owned. Compared to the Ranger the Raptor is a little light on the load carrying ability so something to keep in mind depending on what you want to use it for primarily, but the Raptor makes dirt roads feel like they have been freshly graded. Surprisingly plenty of power from the 2L engine. Very happy with it so far 😎🍺

Hey Damo, I just wanted to say great videos mate and you have convinced me.. I just ordered a my20.25 raptor and can’t wait for it to arrive in a couple of weeks. Mate, I Just wanted to ask you a quick question, with the long range fuel tank is the fuel gauge fairly accurate and is the distance to empty on the screen still working ? Did it need calibrating ? Cheers mate Neil
@RoundTheFire
@RoundTheFire 4 жыл бұрын
G’day Neil, the DTE and Fuel gauge were fairly well off calibration once the tank was installed. There is the ability to get a third party to tap into the computer and change the settings but I never had the chance to go down that path...I found that I really had to ignore the DTE and work off the needle. Basically I found that when the needle first starts to move from “F” I had used 50L. From “F” to “E” was 100L. So I would need to keep a good eye on L/100 and the ODO to be sure off road. On the plus side when the fuel light came on to warn 80ks till empty I had well over 100ks+ in the tank so I would just use that as my guide and fill after the E light was on.

G'Day Dan welcome back mate. Mid April I will be departing on the trip. The extra fuel capacity should give me 1500Ks planing range for the highway and easily 1000Ks off road. The key factor for me is the 1000ks range off road. My current set up allows me to be comfortably off grid for 5 days before resupply.

G’day Damo, just goin through ya videos again trying to find where ya goin again for your holidays. Regarding your weights mate - it’s my understanding that the ball weight is also taken off your GVM. If you’re trailer is putting 120kg on the ball then you’re down to 438kg left with the 200 you mention that’s already gone in. Mate I’m lookin right into the weights with the Raptor and it’s a struggle to come to a compromise with the Mrs and what she wants with me wanting the Raptor aswell. I think I’ll get there but my biggest problem will be factoring in ball weights into the GVM whilst keeping everyone (and the law) happy. It’s also where lithium batteries may help you out - a 100 amp hr lithium is around 13kg and is rated similar to 200amp hr agm set up due to you being able to discharge a lithium as low as around 20% - some say lower but 20% is considered safe. They’re around $800 but will take a huge charge with a lifecycle that leaves an agm for dead. Just throwing some ideas out there mate, I’m lookin at all options to get me across the line. Cheers 🤙
@RoundTheFire
@RoundTheFire 5 жыл бұрын
Gday Chriso, you are 100% correct mate, ball weight transfers over to the tug further reducing the GVM. Once you start looking seriously into GVM and GCM it becomes quite apparent how many vehicles out there are actually running over weight. For example a LC 200 chopped and stretched with a canopy and the usual suite of tuff accessories is already over GVM before you add the driver 😳. Vehicle manufacturers figures for max tow capacity are calculated with empty vehicles and trailers. GVM + Trailer weight = GCM, so load either one of those up and you affect the numbers of the other points on the triangle. She’s a fairly twisty rabbit hole once you start looking!! 😁 I think this is where airbags come into play on most nomad vehicles. Level the whole rig up, doesn’t look overloaded so it mustn’t be right...? My plan so far is to transfer the extra fuel weight in Gerry’s from trailer to the tug (Raptor)(long range tank) shift water from tug to trailer. (Water is heavier than fuel) only fit the necessary accessories to the tug vehicle. Careful load positioning on the trailer (finding the balance point and working from there) to minimise ball weights. It looks like a fair bit of work on paper but I’ve found small changes seem to have had positive effects (so far) I still need to weigh it all in once I think I’ve got it right. Things would be a lot easier if I wasn’t trying to cart a 300kg quad bike around with me 👍🏻 Of course you can go down the path of a GVM upgrade, I think Pedders is working on something now for the Raptor but the main selling point for me of the Raptor is just how smooth, comfortable and quiet off road travel is...so personally suspension is the last on my list to alter... Oh and not to forget. We are heading up to Lorrela Springs in the NT 🍺
@RoundTheFire
@RoundTheFire 5 жыл бұрын
Lithium is also on my hit list. Even before weight was a factor the sheer benefits of capacity is just too hard to pass up. I’ve seen them at the price you mentioned, which makes it even more appealing 👍🏻
@chrisandshazza01
@chrisandshazza01 5 жыл бұрын
Round The Fire yeah mate exactly what I thought regarding how many vehicles must be getting around overloaded. Without a GVM upgrade a 200 series is pretty much useless with a full family, barwork/winches/ball weight..... you’d be illegal before hitting the road. Agree 100% about the GVM upgrade for the Raptor - wouldn’t do it period for the reasons you mentioned. Will be interesting though how it’s done. If it’s just bags then could be an option - just inflate em’ when you need them to stay legal, best of both worlds.......would have to see the set up though once it comes out. You’ll be safe as houses up there mate even if a little overloaded once you hit the park. I’m guessing you’ll do the same as what I did on the Canning - I was legal to Halls Creek but when we left Halls Creek geezuz Christ mate, after all the fuel/water/beer went in we may have been a tad over🤣 ....didn’t matter as 5min down the road we were on the dirt heading to well 51. That was a V8 shorty 40 running Firestone bags in the rear, what a trip! Yeah the lithium’s mate will be a great thing, it’s the initial outlay that will hurt but the advantages are too good to pass up. Exciting times for ya - lookin forward to yas hittin the road - goin outa range🤙

Mate the canning would have been a hoot of a trip in a 40. I’ve been keen to have a poke around there but always get side tracked. Can’t believe you managed to fit everything in a SWB! I just did the shop for the ‘amber essentials’ yesterday and I’m thinking I’ll need a second trailer to load that in 😂😂 We are on the same page mate, alls fair once you are on the dirt...I’m counting down the days, bit of piece n quiet, new track, new adventure, new story to tell 🍺

Hey Damo, Ive been researching bars - I need something with hoops - have finally gone with an ECB bar - made in Qld, - alloy - and adds only 24kg net to the vehicle.Also has hoops to protect the headlights - Ive hit 2 roos in the last month - one was a full grown grey that left a good dint down the L quarter panel and L front door - would have taken out the L headlamp assembly if the bar had not had the loop protection (stock steel Nissan bar on a 2008 Navara D40). Good luck with the search. Thanks for your vids - excellent work!

Gday mate, thanks for the great comment 👍🏻 you are definitely right the Raptor is awesome in its standard configuration. Hi new Subscriber hear and excellent quality video you presented. I just bought a new Bt50 and thinking of putting a long range tank in, any particular reason you went with Brown Davis? Thanks
@RoundTheFire
@RoundTheFire 5 жыл бұрын
Gday Dave, welcome aboard and thanks for the great comment 👍🏻 To be honest the main reason for choosing Brown Davis was availability. The aftermarket accessories industry is currently trying to catch up with the release of the Ranger Raptor. Brown Davis was the first to market with a long range tank. Personally I would have possibly chosen a polymer design over steel to keep over all weight down but I’ve known of Brown Davis gear for a long time and certainly can’t fault their workmanship.

Thinking of a GVM upgrade?? If so what plans and figure u hoping to achieve ?
@RoundTheFire
@RoundTheFire 5 жыл бұрын
Gday Matt. Right now I’m trying to work within the GVM limits of the Raptor, basically to see if it’s possible to use a Raptor in its original form as an overlanding platform. Possibly in the future I may consider a GVM upgrade but the trade off is loosing the benefit of the best suspension I’ve ever seen/used. At this stage I’m fairly confident it’s possible to achieve but until I’ve loaded everything in and put it back over the bridge I won’t know for sure. Stay tuned 👍🏻

Yep I’m fairly light on with spare Kgs to use that’s for sure!! 😳 I do have the benefit of a camper trailer that I drag along with me that I can palm off gear into if need be. But to answer your original question I think even having the same GVM as say the XLT or Wildtrack at 3200kgs would allow a that little bit of breathing room.

Lets us know please how accurate the fuel gauge is now and distance to empty
@RoundTheFire
@RoundTheFire 5 жыл бұрын
Gday Trevor. Installing the long range tank has pretty much blown the DTE and fuel gauge out of the water. Currently the DTE assumes 680k range and counts down accordingly. The fuel gauge pick up has been extended so it registers fuel usage as normal however I think the fuel light works with the DTE and will come on when it thinks there is 80ks to go...there is talk that the system will “learn” that it has extra fuel on board...?🤔 an over time will adjust itself? Otherwise I will be looking at getting the settings adjusted. For now I am using the old fashioned method and setting the trip meter. 👍🏻

@@RoundTheFire Thank you. I have the 3.2 ranger with 140 litre tank. Ive had it in for 2.5 years. I'll double check to see if it has adjusted itself. When mine gets between half way and quarter empty i have 40 liters left.
@RoundTheFire
@RoundTheFire 5 жыл бұрын
Cheers mate, thanks for that. I’ve got a buddy who put one in his 3.2 XL a few years back, installed it himself and used all the standard fittings from the old tank. He works off when the gauge reads empty he has just under half a tank left. As a short term fix I’m thinking I might drain the tank then fill it 20lt at a time until the fuel light goes off to see how much I have left in reverse when it comes on? I need to do a bit more research into this forescan bizzo first. 👍🏻
