Work on a commercial farm and we have each of these model pickups !! Most are driven off road being sand and mud , and loaded with the max carrying capacity . So far the Toyota has been the best in terms of reliability and running costs !! The Raptor is only a game changer when it comes to overall performance, yet in the 6 months having it on the farm we've experienced more technical problems ie. electronics . The Amarok just feels too soft as a work horse , nothing really beats the Toyota reliability, we've got Hiluxs' on the farm with 300000 miles and 400000miles respectively without having any issues !! So yet to see how the Amarok and Raptor will be in the long run !!

There's a reason why the Hilux is not only the best selling pickup in the world but also the most trusted. On the road it’s not so much that the Raptor has coil springs but that they are rated to carry only 650kgs approx, rather than the commercial spec 1060kgs approx of the much stiffer others. The American specification leaf sprung Rangers and probably Amarok, if they decide to sell it there, will have 500 to 650kg rated springs, much softer than Australian and European models. What you tend to ignore is the fuel consumption of the Raptor, which you may find to be around 15mpg compared to the other two doing double the mpg or even better with still more than adequate road performance. They also tow 3.5 tons while the Raptor does not. The others are the sensible choice, especially for business user while the Raptor is the rich man’s toy. The difference between men and boys is actually the size of their toys.

Ex 2021 SR5 Cruiser owner here, and I traded for a Ranger raptor 3L (460hp here in New Zealand) Nearly had it for a whole year now and so far it is the best car I have owned. It’s used on high country farming, reliability has been great, and puts a smile on your face when you hit that pedal. From my experience I think the older 1980-2000s hiluxs are where they were there best, but now the fan boys are too caught up in the brands and afraid of taking ego hits. New hilux blew a turbo towing a Cam am X3, the newer hiluxs aren’t as good as what they say, I have mate who owns a couple mechanic shops and they have had heaps of newer model hiluxs coming in with problems…. I have fitted air bags to my Raptor which can tow 3500kgs now, so not being affected by anything. The fuel prices are just increased slightly but doesn’t matter if you can afford one.

adding airbags doesn't raise your GVM, you can't legally tow 3500kg's in a Raptor (yes I have a next gen Raptor). All you do is improve the drop in the suspension from the weight of the trailer and you ruin the ride quality and travel of the shocks. Also your NZ Raptor is NOT 460hp, it's 392hp (same as AUS). Other that that your comments are spot on.

They have already updated ten speed auto to increase life. Ford actually manufacture and sell about 1.5 million of these 10 speed automatics every year and most run to a very high mileage before any problem occurs. The Aisin-Warner six speed auto in the HiLux is also a good transmission and is also used in the Isuzu D-Max and Mazda pickups and was indeed used in an earlier form in six speed Audi Q7 vehicles.

Very true, but It goes to show that toyota haven’t updated the hilux for so long because of how well it was performing in the long run, I believe that after the hilux gets refurbished it will be a long ways better than the ranger. The previous ranger didn’t stand a chance off road to the 10 year old hilux platform. The new hilux will once again be a design that lasts for long whilst the ranger has to update every 3 years to keep up.

HiLux is as noted for rusting chassis as the others. As for longevity and reliability of components, the others have caught up with if not overtaken Toyota in recent years. @@jdmguy44 Long term, yes. There’s nothing much to choose between them. I am a very happy Land Cruiser 100 series 1HD-FTE 4.2 diesel owner of very long standing and even when I bought that [I still have it] back in late 1998, it had a few initial faults, worse of which were a badly misaligned front suspension, sticky driver’s seatbelt, a water leak into a foglight and a faulty transmission computer that was changed out. A 2004 Range Rover 3.0 diesel had absolutely zero faults in the four years I had it. The 2014 Ranger, which I also still run in the fleet, had only a faulty EGR valve under warranty and since has only had a few broken rear springs, two of which were aftermarket, and a seized fifth injector that helps light up the DPF. No build issues whatsoever and no faults that have left me stranded. The new Ranger, which has only done some 4000 miles yet, is absolutely perfectly built with only a faulty wheel pressure sensor needing warranty work, which is obviously a generic big-name supplier part as probably fitted to many different models of vehicles. I can certainly tell you after 25 years running a Toyota and a friend having a large mixed fleet including Toyota, Nissan, Ford and Land Rover utes/pickups plus a large number of vans comprising mainly Renault, Vauxhall, Mercedes and others, and having run Toyota vans in the past, that they are all generally good and all have their particular strengths and weaknesses. It is unwise and even slightly juvenile to fall into brand adoration and loyalty traps. Particularly naive to swallow advertising propaganda designed specifically to engender customer loyalty. It’s all bull, believe me.

In the REAL world the Toyota is the best off roader. Both the others have documented reliability issues and will ultimately fail when the going gets really tough. There are also reports that these Rangers start rusting even when they are only a couple of years old! Would not buy a VW due to their past shenanigans.

The diesel engine is much better for a pickup, can tow more and carry more and gives better mpg and diesel can be bought for cheaper for businesses. Leaf springs are an absolute must for a pickup due to load carrying and towing, plus they last a lifetime so no maintenance required. The wobbly steering wheel on the Hilux is so it is more comfortable offroad. A highly strung setup will throw you all over the place offroad. The hilux is a previous generation of pickup, been around since 2016. I'd still take Toyotas reliability and functionality over the other 2, better yet, wait until 2024 and get the new generation Hilux

All of them are easy to clean leather/plastic interiors although rubber mats are optional. The deathly black with piano black bits of the Toyota actually shows the dirt and dust worse than the others.

I’ve got a Hilux GR sport I’ve upgraded with OME BP-51 suspension (2in lift), 33x12.5r17 off road Yokohama G003 tyres, ARB air lockers and loads more😅 as I’m also from Birmingham, so let me know if you want to test a Hilux with much more capabilities to defend the brand rep :) 👍🏻

Was actually trying to decide for a truck that we need for our job which is landscaping, but besides that, off-road capability was a great perk too so wanted to check it out and overall considering the loading capacity, towing capacity, off-road capability and budget, it seems like Hilux is the best choice.

@@TylerMiller-nz9on what are you talking about? I've a 1997 Hilux and a 2018 model, and have to say the early version was a workhorse and still working strong nowadays. Know plenty of other owners that had issues with their newer models, more likely due to DPF issues. Where I live in, plenty of early 90's Hilux could be seen working in farms. The new model didn't yet passed the test of time.

@@RogerM88 I agree except that you will find very few pickup trucks from the 90’s still working in the UK due to chassis rust. A few enthusiasts may look after the undercarriage with loving care but most work trucks go to the breakers yard at between 15 and 20 years old. Up until the turn of the century it was common for the chassis to crumble away to an unsafe condition by its tenth year. HiLux was no better than average and some year’s production were far worse than industry average for rusting chassis.
