Brown Parents Don't Believe in Therapy

It's so weird that my Indian parents don't believe in therapy, even though they're the reason I go! Jokes aside, I grew up in a culture that didn't really talk about mental health and I'm trying to change that and address the stigma. Did you experience something similar in another culture? Let's talk about it and make sure we're all mentally healthy during this difficult time. Love you, Lilly x

My dad says there’s no such thing as depression & he gets made when therapy is mentioned. He had a stroke yrs ago (he’s ok now!) and told the medical staff in the stroke rehab unit he wanted to be discharged & go home because it was “depressing” seeing the people lay around & in wheel chairs. Apparently, he believes in depression when it happens only to him. Ha! All is SO TRUE! One Love Lilly & to all! 💗🙏🏽💜

This is one of these moments where it actually makes sense that my people (Romani People) descend from India. My mom is always like: "We don't have time for depression etc." In any case if you happen to have mental issues nonetheless don't go to the therapist. Sometimes this is how our parents' generation grew up (the tough way) and so they learnt that everything has to work that way! And sometimes they also receive these ways of parenting from being a victim themselves in their childhood and it never hit them so hard. So they repeat these unhealthy, neglectful ways of behaving with their children. Hence many a times the deep issues lie within their past and such a thing should not be taken personally or it may be enough to break someone.
