A batch of uppers was manufactured with incorrect specs and wasn’t caught by inspection. Thankfully, Brownells gave excellent customer service and paid to ship back the defective upper and sent me a new one as soon as the company produced a correct batch. See the Hk M4 at 4:00 I ordered the M4 stocks for the prototypes from Brownell’s. If you look closely, you can see the Bushmaster snake logo. Larry Vickers was a frequent customer at the FFL I worked at just outside of Fort Bragg at the time and even had one of his end mills in the back. He put together a list of some basic parts they needed and had us order them. The M4 waffle stocks were cool at the time. We originally had them in the Land Warrior Airborne Test Platoon in my Company in 3-325 AIR in the 82nd, but we were supposed to turn them in and put the Colt Fiberlite stocks back on. During an ORS, I found some in a connex and snagged one for my M4, textured it with Rustoleum stone coat, camo’d it, then matte-coated it along with my KAC rail panels. There were almost no after-market stock options back then due to the Clinton AWB, which finally expired in 2004 and then it was on like Donkey Kong.

It's too bad it doesn't have adjustable gas to keep that wonderful pattern when suppressed. I went the LMT route for that, and overall better quality. IMHO, the LMT shovelnose is a much better handguard solution, and that piston assembly only takes a few seconds to disassemble, which makes it so much easier to clean. LMT's cryo-chrome-lined barrel is also about as good as it gets for a fighting rifle. The 12" piston barrel shot 1.3 to 1.8 MOA groups at 50m with a 2MOA red dot and magnifier using 60cpr defensive 5.56 ammo, resting on a backpack. Since I want to know how the accuracy is under a more realistic setting instead of testing its mechanical potential. HK's attitude towards the cilivan market drove me away from liking their products. If I really want something like a 416, this BRN4 is definitely a very good choice!

Brownells had been doing some amazing things lately. Especially between this and the brn 180. My only gripe with the brn is that once the dust cover is open, the ingress of mud, dust, etc is quite likely in certain conditions. I really wish they would look at how sig 550 solved this problem with a rubber seal riveted to the upper receiver that allows the charging handle to reciprocate without opening up the action.

Why? because I shot both eyes open and would look for a bullet impact with my left eye and slam off another round too soon.

I've always wondered how an SKS style gas system would work in an AR pattern rifle. There have been hybrids using the AK style gas system with the Korean K2 series, and the typical gas system on an AR reminiscent of the German Gewehr 43 / Soviet SVT-40 system, but I've never seen the SKS style gas setups attempted. I do have an oddball SKS that was made by Norinco that is in .223 that uses Type 84 magazines so the system is viable for smaller calibers.

Most use the same gas system as an SKS, short stroke piston. The SKS uses a diffrent locking system, very similar to the StG44 and the FAL so some extent.
@HustleMuscleGhias5 ай бұрын
@@SmallArmsSolutions I apologize, I should have been a little clearer in my wording. With that being said, let me rephase my statement. I've always wondered about how a system with a piston and gas block identical to that of an SKS would work on an AR platform rifle ( regardless of bolt carrier system ) and if there would be any benefits in the long term in terms such as reduction in power fouling or the ability for longer sustained firing especially if a role similar to an RPK type configuration. I do know that barrel harmonics would be an issue to some extent, but hypothetical and what ifs always interest me.
@SmallArmsSolutions5 ай бұрын
The SKS system using a push rod and an intermediate rod id identical to many rifles such as LWRCI, HK 416, Caracal…… All thats different is the intermediate rod is held in a separate compartment and the return spring is attached to the intermediate rod instead of the operating rod. The system is the same. The RPK is better designed as a long stroke for the heavy full auto use. The thicker operating rod is very beneficial for durability. The SKS is designed with semi-auto in mind. Far less demanding than full auto let alone a sustained fire weapon. Hope this answers your question.

My problem with piston ARs compared to DI guns is heat distribution. When you fire a lot of rounds quickly, piston guns will get really hot at the gas port, even though the action remains cool. That sounds great until you consider that ALL the heat which would normally distribute throughout a DI system gets contained in one place. I can’t imagine that’s good for the metallurgy of the barrel and gas block. At least in a DI gun, that heat is distributed throughout, and partly expelled through the action. DI guns get hot too, but it’s different with a piston gun. I’m not a fan.
@SmallArmsSolutions5 ай бұрын
The bolt on an internal piston would never get hot enough to damage the components of the bolt. Heat in the carrier argument is mute. The rifle would have blown long before the springs and components would hit any transformation temperatures.

What happens if you use an actual 416 gas block on the Brownell's barrels? Does it go right back to being over gassed? Also is the port size on the barrel the same as the original 416?

I wish PSA would make one of these, as they should have the ability to bring the hammer forged barrel and forged upper (rather than billet) to market. That they have not attempted it makes me think it's difficult to pull off. So good job to Brownell's for at least bringing us the look and the operating system.

You mentioned HK used unobtainium French made barrels for their 416s. I was wondering if you could do a video on that. I’m very curious about that. Side note: I wish Brownells/Faxon still made the government profile barrels. I was lucky that I got the earlier nitride ones but I would like it to be chrome-hammer forged.

@TheOtherFagola5 ай бұрын
@bradborgelt60 Base on a few minutes of snooping around it looks like the only way we’re gonna find out if it’s true or not is with a long, multi year review to see which barrel lasts longer and then a burn down test with FN’s magic barrel vs a normal cold hammer forged, chrome-lined barrel. Maybe see if Iraqveteran js up to it. Didn’t find any mention of French though, probably gotta dig more.

@@timewave02012 The Elcan weight about 22 ounces. The Trijicon VCOG weighs 23 ounces. Primary Arms SLX is about 21 ounces. You can get a ton of 1-6 or even 1-8’s that weigh about the same, if not less than the Elcan. And that isn’t including Prism scopes that weigh nothing. The Elcan isn’t a bad scope. It runs with a suppressor super clean, and it doesn’t speed up the bolt carrier cyclic speed like a standard m4-m16. if you’ve ever fired suppressor on a direct impingement M4 vs piston, the difference is night and day. Carbon fowling doesn’t travel hardly at all to the bolt carrier group and the action. Hence, why the Marines use them m27. Also much more resilient in and out of water conditions (won’t blow up in your face coming out of the water). A large majority of SOCOM use these as well, depending on the mission set.

Question? Perhaps this is just a cheaper version of the HK, BROWNELL'S take. Is there similarities with the SIG 516? If a rifle is over gassed as opposed to under gassed does that mean the reliability goes up? Is there a M4 or a AR 15 manufacturer that shoots a 2 round burst?
@SmallArmsSolutions4 ай бұрын
Cost is a very subjective topic. How much does something cost to make vs how much markup one puts on it. The Brownells is a refined version which has has same benefits of the HK system. Using the cold hammer forged barrels, i dont think you will find much difference in performance between the HK and the Brownells. The one I tested, worked wonderfully. You can see the proper ejection pattern, how controllable it was on full auto and how accurate.

There are no patents being infringed. Those patents for the gas system are done. That’s the G36 gas patent which predates the 416.
