Terrific video as always! One thing most of these videos seem to exclude is caps! I’ve made the mistake of getting rings just high enough to clear on some rifles and then can’t get my caps on the scope. Leave enough clearance to install and operate your caps!

Excellent video and explanation. One wants the center line of sight as close to the barrel center axis as possible. I make a zero chart for each rifle. I place paper on the counter, mark the barrel OD measurement and the Top of the scope measurement at the top of the bell. I use my caliper to measure the bottom of the scope at the same place. I divide the two measurements by 2 then bring the centers over one another. I have a zero chart for each rifle @ close distance. This will get you on paper out to 250 yards.

On the first page of a google search for measuring scope right height, I can see in a number of places; 1) From the top of the Weaver base to the bottom of the scope, 2) from the top of the Weaver base to the center of the scope. But this video shows from bottom of the Weaver base to the bottom of the scope. The problem is Vortex rings give a number, like 0.97", but do not specify which method of measurement.

Ingenius! Only one bolt rifle in my collection would fail this procedure ... because the ocular then rides too low for the bolt's removal. I purchased a taller set of rings for this reason. (Marlin XT-22 rimfire series.)

Should have mention checking for bolt clearance. Also this technique applies to bolt guns and some semi autos. (Not AR 15.) Other then that great video.

I DO NOT HAVE THE SCOPE YET. So I just ordered a Nikon 6751, Prostaff 5 3.5-14X50, Illuminated BDC Reticle. The specs say: Objective Diameter (mm): 50 Is that referring to the largest diameter part of the scope (bell?)? If so that equates to almost 2". So with that said which heith ring will it take to clear the barrel? It will be mounted on a Browning BLR white gold medallion 7mm-08. --- thx!

So is that distance the way the rings are measured? For example, 3/8 thickness of clay would be a 3/8 high ring? Or does the measurement of the ring go to the center of the scope?

If you measure 3/8 or .375 as a height, that is the distance you will need from the top of the base to the bottom of the saddle, but please be aware that ring manufacturers measure ring height two different ways. Some will measure from the top of the base to the bottom of the saddle, while others will measure from the top of the base to the center of the ring. Please be sure to check the individual manufacturer’s specs.

This is like when a crowd applauds for a performance even though the performance was below par just to feel their being polite. I have experience with a gunsmith using a scoop mount that was to short to clear the bolt. Guys raise your standards for videos. Call it out when you see it.

That's the dumbest thing I've seen yet! It does not take into account the cant of say a base with a 30 MOA cant.
