This is a very helpful video considering how important ring height is, not only so your scope will not contact the barrel but also to assure you get a proper cheek-weld so you have a clear sight picture comfortably.

Thanks Mate, great, simple, effective idea/hack. I also borrowed this method to compare the height of scope rings, fitted onto my other Rifles. I used the best fitting high rings, to mount a 2.5-10x50mm Nightforce onto my new Lithgow 243 bolt action. Remounted the donor rifle and scope in lower rings that didn't have enough clearance for the 50mm objective lens.

Fantastic. Wish I had seen this before I bought my rings. Got the wrong height, keep them past 30 dys and well, now I'm stuck. But great way to go about it.

FYI: depending on mfr, there are two different ways of measuring ring height. One includes 1/2 the tube diameter, as per DFOOSKING, and the other does not, including only the distance from the top of the scope base to the bottom of the tube. It's a good idea to find out which method your ring mfr uses!
@DFOOSKING6 жыл бұрын
That is correct. Some rings by the same manufacturer can have different methods. LEUPOLD STD rings shown in the video use the method I shown. But LEUPOLD QRW and PRW for example do not....as the ring cap junction where it meets the lower half is angled downwards.

I know this is a very old video, but I had to add a comment. Thank you for taking the time and simplifying the process. I’m currently shopping to add a scope myself to my boom stick. It’s been a month I’m clicking videos after videos hoping for someone to tell me what scope height do I need to buy before buying one and finding out it’s too high, or too low. None , none of them showed anything. I’m guessing they just want you to go buy one after another and waste the money on their products just to find out that it’s not the right one, or not compatible. Thank you sir 🙏

Some rings are measured from the bottom of the mount to the bottom of the lower part so all you might need is the height of the coins.

Love it. Simple system. Now, why didn't I think of that before just trying random ring sizes?!
@tomn58806 жыл бұрын
objective lens diameters vary among different scope manufactures. Once you figure out what scope height works for you, low, medium or high it ought to remain the same from rifle to rifle. If you switch to a larger objective lens or a different style of rifle the height above the receiver will change. Don't be afraid to modify the stock with an adjustable cheek rest.

How simple can it get, have gauge blocks, from.010 to 1" will work perfect, never thought of doing it the way you did, and you gave me a great idea. 👍👍👍👍 Great info, and I have never seen a video on where the height is measured on the scope rings, but do know it's from the base to half way up the rings, but no one ever mentions it. thanks again, love the video.

I would suggest that this technique tells you the minimum, but not the optimal, ring height. Yes the objective must clear the action, but the correct height is determined by where your pupil sits in relation to the centre of the scope tube when you bring the rifle to your shoulder, which in itself is primarily determined by the height/design of the stock cheek piece.

I’ve shared this video on countless FB posts in the past year when people ask what size rings they need and see people suggest a wide variety of answers. I’ve also suggested using calipers instead of a ruler

Both stacks must contain the same number of pennies so the scope tube is parallel to the base. If it looks like it is going to be a high mount, you can use nickels to start and then switch to pennies or even dimes for closer measurement.

Is there a way to figure it out before having the scope? Obviously if you order scope online or buy in store you will want to get the rings at the same time.

How would this help finding eye alignment height? One adjusts the scope height to fit ones eye when ones cheek is welded to the rifle stock. If that height is so low the scope bell (front end) is touching the barrel then one needs to raise the scope a little and add a cheek rest to the rifle stock.
@DFOOSKING6 жыл бұрын
Who said anything about making the scope bell touch the barrel? The vast majority still need comb risers even with the scope mounted tight to the barrel. The ones with high cheek bone to eye spacing or shooters who primarily shoot with a offhand head high natural head position aren't having a problem knowing they can't scrunch down low enough to see in.
@newerest13 жыл бұрын
it doesn't . this is just a "tip" for people who are still obsessed with trying to get their scope as close to the bore as possible like it's still the 1960s
