"I might as well rip all the seats out anyway cos no one's gonna want to ride with me". Gold! Love those little sneaky bits of subtle humour. And wow, I would not have expected the 6 speed to be worth almost a second. That's a LOT. I've only just discovered your channel and I'm loving it so far. Thanks mate, I often wonder if I'm just putting those in to make myself laugh so glad at least one other has enjoyed them! 🤣 With this setup at least it's well ahead, plenty of little things you could do to make that up. Even a smaller wheel/tyre would probably help but I think what we have will suit our eventual end goal better - lets see. Cheers mate and hope you enjoy what we have coming up 👍

@@BrowneysGarage What's a 6 speed worth? Would that be a viable swap into your model? Just curious. And I can't believe that for how long they've been around I've never heard anyone call a Garrett turbo "Peter". That's brilliant. I'm looking forward to the future adventures of Browney and Pete, lol.
@BrowneysGarage4 жыл бұрын
@woopimagpie 6 speed auto? Sure I’ve seen it done before but looks like a lot of work, from memory it may even require swapping in most of the wiring loom for a donor car. Haven’t gone too in depth though in saying that cause the price of the gearbox seems pretty high and they have their own issues. If I was to swap I’d likely go to a 6 speed manual. For the price the BTR’s aren’t that bad, plenty of them and support about and with some boost/diff gearing change/or a high stall it’ll wake up quite a bit. Thanks mate, I was pretty pleased with myself on the Peter Garrett part too... but I am a huge child!
@woopimagpie4 жыл бұрын
@@BrowneysGarage Hmm. It sounds like it would be a lot easier to just acquire a car that had a 6 speed auto in it already if you were hell bent of having one, which I know you're not. I was just curious. I'm totally with you on preferring a manual if you were going to go to that trouble. As a guy with some circuit racing and hillclimbs/time trials in my past a manual is a no-brainer, but drag racing is a totally different animal and having a manual in that application doesn't really seem to help, especially once you start getting into big power. Broken drivetrain components would be a regular occurrence with a manual it seems. Funny enough, I used to scorn the drag racers among my peers back in those days, but if I were to get back into motorsport I'd probably opt for drag racing as my recreation of choice now. Not sure how I'd go about that exactly with no drag strips anywhere near me (mid-north coast of NSW), so for the time being I'm content to watch and learn from others like yourself on youtube. Don't get too carried away with Peter Garrett - sometimes the quest for power and speed is at the expense of enjoyment and fun. I've owned a couple of properly quick cars in my day, and spent some serious money along the way, but the times I remember as the most fun have always been with the hopeless shitboxes. Funny how that works. My daily driver these days is a lowly little Daihatsu Terios with a few little dodgy backyard mods (not necessarily improvements - mostly just cheap fixes and cheeky shortcuts), but far out it's a super fun little car to push along. I can mash the pedal to the floor and it will rev its head off, and careen around with squealing tyres and hot brakes whilst still well under the speed limit. It's hilarious, and is the most fun I've had driving a car by far. Sometimes I arrive at a destination literally laughing it's that much fun. I don't ever remember doing that in my full house rally-engined hillclimb Gemini, or my Windsor-powered XP Falcon, or my wife's fairly well modded Fiat X19. All those cars were quick, but ended up costing a bomb, and my current little Di cost 4 grand 10 years ago.... Go figure. I've never owned any other car for half that long, but it's such a laugh I can't let it go. I have a mate who has a Mark II Mini Clubman with a blown 1100 motor - I'm half thinking about persuading him to sell it to me so I can see what kind of fun can be had with it. A Honda B series engine would be a tempting swap for the blown 1100, but I'd probably be running the gauntlet on the speed vs fun equation.... Probably just rebuilding the 1100 would be a better (and cheaper) option if it's not too far gone. The Daihatsu has made me a convert to small modestly-powered cars, that's for sure. Or maybe a Daihatsu engine would fit in the Mini.... lol. I look forward to seeing what you do with your current gearbox, if anything, and how it can be transformed into something half useful at the track. As a total auto newb you can bet I'll be enjoying learning some things watching you do it. I doubt I will ever own a Falcon again (been there, done that), but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the hell out of watching someone else play with one and have some fun and learn some things along the way. Congratulations on making it to the end of my essay. Keep that sense of humour mate, and have fun. Cheers.

@@woopimagpie I made it through mate, sounds like some good history behind you. Taking things too far is always a concern, especially when a lot of KZbin and the car community just want to see that peak figure! Can't guarantee things won't get out of hand on one of the cars at some stage but generally I'm happier working on and driving beaters or at least less than perfect cars. I've had a low km, perfect example type car before, a manual EL XR8 with all the right options... I drove it probably 2 or 3k kms in the several years I owned it cause I was constantly on edge driving it, parking it etc. Was by no means a huge dollar car but was to me at the time! Yeah I think N/A BA's has a tall 3.0x rear end, and with the 4sp there is zero to gain in the 60ft, even if you gained 50hp at the top end. Barra's have torque, but needs 2k of revs before it wakes up. Might get a small gain if you throw a 16" steelie on the rear axle to slightly reduce that 3.0x rear but other than that you'd probably use a shorter (at least) 4.10 rear before you see larger gains with the 4sp, in N/A config at least.

Just come across your channel. Nice one! Good to see a budget approach to mods that anyone can copy. I'd like to see one of these things using a modern screw type supercharger. The low end and mid-range torque and throttle response would certainly help overcome the deficiencies of that BTR 4 speed. But I can appreciate it's not the easiest or cheapest way to go. All the best with it.

I like your thinking mate, would be awesome to give it a go. And to me something like a PD supercharger sounds like a perfect option for a street driven car for instant, all round response and boost - to a level any way. Super keen for the turbo man, I’ve got a BF that I’m planning on doing the same thing with in the new year, so I’ll probably be going off your videos at the same time as you do them ahaha, keep it up 👌🏻

Me too mate! Going to take a little time before it's all done with a few steps along the way I think but result should be worth it, and I reckon it can still be done pretty cheap. Thanks and good luck with your BF 👍

Can’t wait for the next episode.. Well done for having a go man. You and many of us that follow your Chanel are in the same boat. I too have a NA BF MK 2 with a 6 speed ZF and I swear it’s much quicker than my first BA 4 speed. I do believe the ZF and the different diff ratios have a lot to do with it as my BA couldn’t do anything like this. Of course it would do a burn out on the brakes but not just off the mark like my BF.. I’m also looking at doing a turbo upgrade so I’d be interested to see how you go with yours so I can get the inspiration to go ahead with mine. 😉 can’t wait 👍🤙🏻👊🏼💪🏻
@BrowneysGarage4 жыл бұрын
Yep that ZF seems to make a pretty big difference off the line and I'm sure it will feel a lot better, especially at this level and without stall/gear mods. You'll have better base to start from that's for sure! Thanks mate, and happy to be a bad influence on you if I can! 👍

brilliant finish to the series mate. I was hoping the old girl would break into the 14's but it is what it is. really looking forward to the next series with the turbo as thinking i will do similar with another ba i picked up and see if i can make it quicker than the factory turbo BA i have
@BrowneysGarage4 жыл бұрын
I was too mate but I think we've proven that it's definitely there and perhaps even quicker if you wanted to do diff gears or develop the NA mods a little more. Think we'll be well suited to the turbo setup though and I'm keen to get into that so didn't want to get too preoccupied with getting every last bit out of it now. NA + T should be a fun setup, good luck with yours as well and thanks for the support 👍

@Geoff kydd Damn good time there mate, definitely sets a target and gets me excited for the conversion. Sorry if you’ve mentioned but what mods was this with? BTR or manual?
@justkyddingracing92684 жыл бұрын
@@BrowneysGarage stock BTR which really sucks as could only stall up to 2000rm so no real boost off the line and best 60ft of 2.2 secs . mods are a homemade CAI ( removed fog lights and ran ducting up to airbox) mace intercooler which fits in stock position requiring zero mods(30% better flow) cat delete rest of exhaust stock. header wrap on exhaust manifold down to dump pipe., turbo beanie, turbo smart wastegate actuator. I did have issues on day one which i suspect was fuel starvation with 1/4 tank of gas and could only manage 14.2 filled up to 3/4 and instantly ran a 13.7 @ 96mph yes breaking hard to try not to break out of my dial in time ( fail went out in round 3)

If you want an easy way of changing your diff ratio. Use a 235/40R17 instead of a 235/45R17. Will make the 3.45 diff ratio to a 3.6 diff ratio. This will help a little with your 60ft times.

I did a 2011 fg engine swap in my 2004 xr6 and the difference is quite noticeable. It's said the later plastic intake adds 30kw which would be a worth while conversion for anyone looking for some extra power Na.
@BrowneysGarage4 жыл бұрын
Interesting, makes sense though. Not sure if there's 30kw in just the later intake but I'd be happy to be wrong, regardless it's seems it would be a worthy upgrade if staying NA. Thanks mate 👍
@JTECH77664 жыл бұрын
@@BrowneysGarage it's not something I'm chasing personally, I have a 1000hp turbo 2002 xr6. The only reason for the swap was to replace a tired engine but found some forums where some boasted of significant gains from the intake. For anyone considering a later model engine conversion they should look to the 2010 or earlier. 2011 onwards changed quite a bit and I had to drill out the block for dipstick relocation and change the sump and pickup. Then modify the engine harness for the different coils, tps and map sensor.

How you going mate, love the series, I myself have an Envi Green BA XR6 MkII 4spd bye, I’m making 160.2 rwkw with stock tune, running a full polished stainless steel xforce 2.5” system, two mufflers and high flow metallic catalytic converter, 20% under drive kit, growler CAI with a high quality pod filter, and running 19x9.5 rims on the rear with some cheap 275/30/19 tyres, I think to up that 60 foot time you should definitely get a 3000rpm stall converter to help with the launch, I know that’s my next thing to do aswell as a tune and hope to take to the track to see what she does, also my old girl had 267k on the clock
@BrowneysGarage4 жыл бұрын
Sounds like a nice setup and great car, could be biased on that last part though. Stall would definitely help but so will building a bit of boost on the line! Sounds like you're set on the stall but just for reference the few people I've spoken to, including my tuner, highly recommended diff gears even over the stall converter. Just something to consider, sure you've probably gone over it plenty before deciding on the stall converter anyway though. Good luck with it mate, and let me know how you go 👍

Awesome work mate, you could try stalling it up on the handbrake not the brake, the torque protection in the auto kills your 60ft times.
@BrowneysGarage4 жыл бұрын
May have been worth a go but don't think the handbrake would have even held it at idle at the moment! Cable has stretched badly on one side and will likely need replacing. Had tried finding more info regarding any torque protection and couldn't find a great deal. Have you seen this effect even NA cars?

Browney what sort of coil packs are you running ? Try some Sniper coil packs if your are not already they multiple spark discharge and they fire big a fraction of a second earlier really important on turbo cars as they tend to blow out the spark and misfire. These coil packs work really good with Non turbo cars as well use a new cheap fibrous type air filter and you will find out how good your car really is.
@BrowneysGarage3 жыл бұрын
Genuine OEM, seem good enough for plenty of big power cars. Firing earlier? I'd rather have the ignition timing do what the tune expects it to be doing even if that is true. I'm sorry mate, glad you're happy with them and I'm sure they work but anything I've read on the subject still recommends genuine - I could always be wrong though!

Certainly a bit of power to be had in cams but I haven't been blown away by any results I've seen from it and for the cost it didn't seem worth it for me personally. If staying NA long term it may be worth looking at but even then I'd be going diff gears before that if you can live with the higher cruise RPM.

Expensive postage but I bought a heap to make it worth while (he's got a load of different sizes including for jacks), and at the time I was looking at options to get something similar going over here but never happened. I do like the idea and product though so maybe one day I'll revisit it, believe they are machined super solid rubber hockey pucks! www.ebay.com.au/usr/cav.mar1?_trksid=p2047675.l2559
