A look at Brownlow Hill in Liverpool. The buildings which are there now and a history of some they replaced. Such as, Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral sits on the site of one of the countries largest Workhouses.

Imagine if our forefathers hadn’t built such beautiful buildings and we lived in a city with architecture only from 1960s onwards. I had a walk down edge lane a few days ago. What a horrible experience.

The Littlewoods Building even though it's damaged is an Art Deco masterpiece, the new retail park looks OK and the fancy entrance to the business park is fine. I'd like to see the skate park reinstated and it's a pity the Paraffin Oil Shop and the Glass House pubs have gone. The big Yellow Storage place is iffy but otherwise it's still a nice walk into town and better than Wavetree Road.

I'm one of those who don't reconise it, except Myrtle Gdns ain't been up there in over 40 years but back in the mid 1970's I regularly commuted up Brownlow Hill early in the morning. I can still remember to thia day passing a really old lady dressed in the most authentic version of the 19th Century workhouse attire I have ever seen. I turned and she'd gone. Dead spooky.

I was born in Liverpool, 1938. After my National Service in the army I came back from Malaya and became a Taxi driver for a while, then went to live in Yorkshire. This video has opened my eyes, it's no wonder why students and visitors from around the world speak highly about this great place of learning and entertainment.

Fascinating video. I just discovered about one year ago, that my dad was born in the workhouse infirmary on Brownlow Hill in 1922. He was born 'out of wedlock' as it was then known after his mother's husband deserted the family and she had to take in a lodger, who became my grandfather. This was all discovered after my sister took a DNA test with Ancestry and the whole story came out. You don't realise the stories that lie behind families and video's like this bring to life the roads and buildings, but it's people's lives of many years ago which are the true story. Thank you.

Amazing video and commentary. I spent time in the city in the 70s and much of what you show is new to me, like the new buildings on the left near the top of the road. I do remember though that a little further up from Brownlow Hill there was a site called "Falker Adventure Playground", though I had never found what it actually was. At the bottom of BH and not very far from the Adelphi Hotel there was a strip club which worked lunch-hours, where many businessmen and other office workers in their suits would flock during their lunch-break. As I recall the shows were well worth watching. I don't at all remember Blackwell's bookshop, as in my experience most educational books were sought at a place called Philip Nephew & Son I believe down Tithebarn Street in the city centre. Finally in my day what is now called John Moore Uni was Liverpool Polytechnic with its main building situated on Byrom Street and other faculty buildings scattered around the centre.

The Cinema opened as Studios 1 2 and 3, there was also a short lived restaurant called the Fastet below which closed soon after it opened after the Fastnet lighthouse yachting disaster in 1979 in which 19 people lost their lives

This has sparked some real, nostalgia for me. The Studio 1 2 3 did a nice mix of mainstream, art house and foreign films, I saw plenty of films there on the big screen although I think my TV in my lounge is actually bigger but you'd usually only these off kilter films late night on BBC2 or Channel 4. They also did great double bills like the Clash documentary Rude Boy and Derek Jarman's Jubilee, John Carpenters Dark Star and George Lucas's THX 1138, Werner Hertzog's Fitzcaraldo and Nosferatu or the wired combination of David Lynch's Eraserhead and Schlondorff's adaptation of Gunter Grass's Tin Drum. To be fair I also saw The Exorcist with The Evil Dead and Kentucky Fried Movie with the Blues Brothers but it was a decent little cinema I miss it although the Picture House at FACT has picked up the slack. I saw the world premier of Michael Jacksons Thriller by chance on a big screen in the Hofbruahaus / Bier Keller in 83 when they booked local bands. A couple of years later I was stabbed by some random angry drunk just outside as I walked past on my way home from Planet X, this lead to a night at A&E in the Royal being stitched up by an utter cutie I'd known from my School days who then became my girlfriend for a couple of years, an interesting scar on my hip and a mention in the Echo.

The front of the car park where you see the tall column with the sign on the top was not originally there. In fact it had a ramp situated there that led up to the car park. It was something like forty-five degrees and my Fathers car charged up it and beneath a rectangular bar/club situated high up the building, facing out. That appeared to be a line of big windows, with white concrete around it. I was reliably informed in 1981 that this was a club that Hawkwind once played a gig at.

Thank you very much for all of your videos Jeff. The beer keller across the road from the Adelphi was called the Hofbrauhaus. I met my future wife there on a work night out in 1978. I also have fond memories of live concerts at the Mountford Hall circa 1975, including Renaissance and Caravan possibly on the same double bill. I’m also a 1957 baby, and, although I never went to your old school Gateacre Comp, my younger brother and sister went there. Inspired by one of your other videos, next time my brother and I are back visiting Liverpool (from opposite ends of the UK) it would be nice to walk around Woolton and Gateacre and share memories with each other. Keep up the good work sir!

Another great Video Jeff. I went to school just across the road from Liverpool Uni. We saw the Cathedral in the latter stages of completion. We also watched the building of the then New Hospital. That was back in the 1960 s. I can remember many of the old shops. Sadly all gone now, but still have the memories.

Where to start? The workhouse where my great grandmother was resident in the 1901 census, the tram to Page Moss where I lived as a kid, the Victoria building where I had a bunch of exams, Blackwell's... which has moved, Time Tunnel at Mountford Hall, the 051 club. Bazooka Chicken's still going :-) The Chemistry department at the top of Brownlow Hill where I studied, the stunning colours in the Cathedral on a sunny day. It's been 15 years since I was last in that part of town - 2008 Capital of Culture year. Happy days.

No tram Lines in the old picture, that would give you some indication of year, those trams coming down Brownlow hill was quite scary coming around the bend by Pearsons Butchers on Smithdown Lane, they bounced and shook something terrible and the screeching of breaks, That photo seems to be after the road was resurfaced , Would that be 1953-55?

Thanks Jeff. I remember going to soft porn films at studio 1? when I was about 13. We used to rub the ink off the echo on our top lip on the 5 bus on the way. The usherette used to stand in the front at half time with a tray of ice cream. Never had a customer. If you charge your punters £60 a lecture (YES! ) plus accommodation, you are in a very strong position, and your graduates will never have any autonomy in career and life. With regard to Paddy's Wigwam I actually never visited it, but recall crying like a baby when I watched Dalglish and the Liverpool team at the service there after Hillsborough. Peace.
