It's a nice low priced clone of the Maxon RTO700. The Maxon RTO700 itself was a clone of the Tube Works Real Tube Overdrive albeit with an integrated noise gate. The Tube Works Real Tube Overdrive was an evolution of the B.K. Butler Tube Driver. The stock tube in the Behringer Vintage Tube Monster is quite horrible though, it sounds a lot better after a tube replacement. Since it uses no clipping diode, op-amps, or transistors and relies purely on the tube running at starved plate voltage for distortion the quality of tube makes a lot of difference for this pedal.

I was a huge fan of the Tube Works stuff back in the 90's. Especially their combo amps and MossValve Power amp. I think BK Butler actually worked with them on some stuff back then? I'm all about analog tube preamps > digital post gain FX > SS power amps currently. Just got a Victory V4 "The Jack" preamp and it's quite honestly the MF'n Shoizbot!🤟✌

I bought one of these a couple of months ago. I use it as a bass preamp in front of my pedal-board - (Bass - Behringer VTM - Marshall ED-1 - Boss ODB3 - Amp). Sounds awesome, so many tonal options with this setup.

Thanks for the review. I have mine with the original tube. It's louder but the tube does not apply that much saturation. I had no idea the difference between those tubes is that drastic, but the new tube is from a slightly different type.

Great review! thx Dome. In my option the pedal is a no-brainer at this price especially when you are into vintage sounds like 70s rock. But I did not know it also works this well behind a nasty pedal like a dead stag, hm-2 asf.

Huh, I actually own one of those, and yes, it is bloody gigantic... I did replace the stock 12AX7 with a JJ ECC82 (aka. 12AU7), though... however I did keep the original valve, because I saw no reason to throw away a perfectly functioning valve for no reason. Anyway, I kinda want to add it to my setup again, because for certain situations, I really like the sound of it... but, again, that thing is a giant metal brick and I lowkey have no idea where to put it on my desk without it being in the way ._.
@simonn40773 жыл бұрын
I've had one for a number of years. I would say, personally, you need to swap out the stock valve (there's loads of options if you do you research), and it's best going into an amp. Going into line level or di box doesn't work for me. Do that and you will get real meaty sounds

Thanks for using a pre-recorded guitar track to demonstrate the pedal! I appreciate it as it removes the human element and players adjusting their dynamics to get the sound they most want to hear. While that is great while playing and practicing, it doesn't demonstrate what the pedal alone does to the sound.

It sounds okay but the fact that the volume has to be dimed to even be level is a little upsetting. Maybe as a preamp into a tube power amp it would have more push. I dunno, I was not as impressed as I hoped to be. Been checking these out for years. At least there is now a video that actually showcases this pedal.

I thought the same thing about the volume drop. Maybe an eq after to bring up the volume but it’s really eats a lot of pedal board space that a tc tube pilot with eq might be a better option?
