there's a photo with him with a canon slr and a large flash during the time he was shooting his subway series. he could have also used leica but i think thats highly unlikely since they're expensive and because he was using flash, being discreet wasnt an issue. he also shot some of his other work in NY on large format if im not mistaken.

Steven...I used to have a large photo book of his work that he did in Harlem where he used a huge 8x10 sheet film camera on a tripod.

that's why photography is dead compared to what it used to be in the past. Most of what I see nowdays is 18 years old hipsters full of money (parent's money) that go around with Leicas shooting homeless people and abandoned houses thinking that they're creating art. Fortunately there's still a lot of great Artists that spend their time trying to tell a story that won't end up on stupid social medias.

I just can't see myself walking around a city with a Leica on the streets and feeling safe that it not going to be stolen. I could be wrong.

I’ve walked around the streets of Atlanta and Detroit with my Leica MP many times. Truthfully, nobody really knows what it is. The most I’ve ever gotten from someone was “nice camera”.

I think the all these black white pictures would have been awesome if you would have just took a little time and took them all in color

You do know that he started taking photographs before colour photography existed, don't you? Some of the b&w photos are from those eras.
