Bruce Davison Wins Best Supporting Actor Motion Picture - Golden Globes 1991

Macaulay Culkin and Mickey Rooney present Bruce Davison wins Best Performance by Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for "Longtime Companion". He thanks the Hollywood Foreign Press and shows his gratitude for being able to play a "part of a lifetime". He goes on to thank the real life characters the film was based on, Craig Lucas, Norman René, Stan Wlodkowski, Lindsay Law, Sam Goldwyn and his company, and his wife.

His performance in this never fades from my memory. Twenty years after I saw this film, my mother was lingering in a coma, and the nurse said to me, "She's staying for you. You have to give her permission to go." I was terrified and started to refuse. And what came to me was a memory of Bruce Davison playing a man of extraordinary strength, and I just pretended I was him and okay with it, and said the words he said. "You can go now," I said. "You can go."

I've sen Longtime Companion over thirty times. The ache and the tears of losing friends to AIDS echo through me each time I've seen it. Bruce Davison and all the other actors gave a powerful performance worthy of acknowledgement.

He was fortunate to win, considering he was up against some top actors . I knew him casually when i went to The Quintano's School For Young Professionals ( high school) in the 1960s . I dont know if he was really attending the school or just came around to visit some other show biz kids who attended. I always remember the day when many of us kids were hanging out, outside the school on a break, and Bruce was standing close behind me, and making comments about what i was saying in the group. I could never figure out if he was joking or just being sarcastic. But it actually seemed like what he said was ,like when a guy likes a girl but doesn't know how to go about getting her interested in him. I just felt he seemed a bit like a conceited wise guy, but in a nice way . Its very hard to explain this vibe i got from him. I didnt really know if he was an young actor for sure, i never asked him. We were basically young people hanging out in a group of high schoolers who,were in some aspect of show business. I knew vor sure he was an actor several years l later, when i would see him acting in TV shows.
