Wow, he was a total cad. So basically he deserted his English wife and six children to go to the US with his young pregnant mistress. After a few years and x children he deserted Them to return home to England. No doubt played the field and occasionally spent time with his first family then deserted them Again. The fact he didn't let Frances know he was alive and back in the US speaks volumes about what a horrible, selfish, mean man he must have been.

Frances probably knew he wasn't really dead but told her children that so they could move on without him. Frances probably did not know where he went after he left her, except to know he got back on a boat to England to live forever more. She made up the story of him dying on the boat and being buried at sea, I am sure.

My grandfather did a very similar thing too. He left his first family and ran off with his secretary, had a family then ran off again in fact he left several women... his obituary says he was a "good christian man"! He deeply wounded my mother and her brother as they never saw him again.

Oh man. My great grandfather did the same thing. He was the reason the family broke apart.
