Bruce Lee was a master at promoting his vision of the martial arts through the movie industry. He popularised martial arts in such a practical and deadly way, this is why it exploded all over the world from the late 1960s onwards. I cannot think of another fighter or boxer in history who did that for their fighting art. Not even Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Robinson, and Jack Dempsey are comparable. They promoted everything they were asked to, but not very much about the pugilistic art that brought them great fame and wealth. They used their considerable charm and personalities only for domestic commercial products and services to polish their brand image, and earn more fame, wealth and celebrity. Bruce Lees fighting systems and philosophical works led to the development and evolution of JKD and MMA around the world. This is in part why he will always be a very important figure and influence in the martial arts world and honoured as an almost mythical and legendary exponent of the martial arts.
@hastyvictories5 ай бұрын
The audacity to name drop Muhammad Ali in a comparison like this when you clearly know nothing about the man.
@MajidAndary Жыл бұрын
the fact that these fight scenes and choreography by Bruce just goes to show how ahead of his time he was. Movies like Kickboxer, Bloodsport and other American films even other Hong Kong films the fight choreography was nowhere near what Bruce did in the 70s. It wasn't until the made the Matrix in 99 that can come close to the kind of style Bruce introduced almost 30 years prior. When we lost Bruce Lee, we missed out on what would have been a large library of the greatest martial art films we would have ever seen. Jackie Chan sort of filled that void by making martial art films in to action comedy. But still, Bruce could have given us so much more.

The problem movie goers would have had with Game of Death is it was more of Bruce emphasizing the importance of adapting to different situations than learning only one fighting style. I doubt if it would have even come close to the heights Enter The Dragon did with movie goers. Which only goes to prove mA was more important to Bruce than the movies were

I agree, I thought this scene was actually very slow and clumsy, too much pondering just emphasized Bruce' ego instead of his abilities, I suspect that he was given too much reign in directing.

I think this is a really good fight scene. Bruce Lee wanted to showcases his beliefs and principles of Martial Arts and somewhat promote Jeet Kune Do in this movie by showing the weaknesses of traditional martial art styles. Lee's opponents and allies are examples of this particularly with Dan Inosanto's character. This being using very traditional movement and footwork that don't blend well for a fight and fixed patterns of offensive and defensive techniques without combining his unarmed combat skills with his armed combat skills, creating a one dimensional fighting style which can be exploited. Weapons in Martial Arts are often referred to as being an extension of the body, while this is true for Dan Inosanto's character, his weapons also becomes a chain blocking his potential to match and even defeat Lee. This is very evident with the bamboo vs kali stick phase of the fight where Lee easily disarms his opponent, forcing him and Lee to switch gears to nunchakus. From the start, where they demonstrate their moves before striking, the opponent's weakness becomes less apparent, but still visible based on grounded movement and less use of the other hand, meanwhile Lee uses bouncy movement and unorthodox looking poses such as when he puts the nunchucks above his hand to get his opponent to strike. The more the fight progresses, the more this weakness becomes apparent and he is eventually knocked down by unarmed kicks and then defeated with a choke, a reference to the flexibility of the nunchuck.

I am going to make myself now a bit...unpopular. I claim the following: Bruce was a little rascal in fighting. He barely attacks,just waiting for the attack of his opponent so he can see the opponents movements. He was good in forcing his fighting style onto you. Thats essential the secret. Never ever fight under the conditions of your opponent. Keep that in mind. Sun Tzu,the art of war: know yourself and know your opponent so the victory will ever be yours. Take care,folks.
