James Kalm cut his art critical teeth covering the rugged DIY art scene of Williamsburg Brooklyn in the late 1990s. This was the first New York art community, outside Manhattan, that was to be considered significant and have an accepted importance internationally. Though by now, pretty much dissipated through its own success and gentrification, a group of major artists from this neighborhood have begun to be included in the canon of contemporary art history. Among this group, Bruce Pearson has long been appreciated for his obsessively crafted paintings with their encoded texts, exuberant color, and mind boggling layering of subject matter. “Shadow Language” is a presentation of Pearson’s most recent works, and also displays examples on paper and collaborative poetic pieces. This program was recorded May 9, 2019.
